Book excerpt: This book presents research advances in automotive AC systems using an interdisciplinary approach combining both thermal science, and automotive engineering. It covers a variety of topics, such as: control strategies, optimization algorithms, and diagnosis schemes developed for when automotive air condition systems interact with powertrain dynamics. In contrast to the rapid advances in the fields of building HVAC and automotive separately, an interdisciplinary examination of both areas has long been neglected. The content presented in this book not only reveals opportunities when interaction between on-board HVAC and powertrain is considered, but also provides new findings to achieve performance improvement using model-based methodologies.

Book excerpt: In this study the refrigerant in the automobile air-conditioner is compressed by thermal energy in a unique compression system rather than by work in a standard compressor. The compression uses an intermittent compression process with a solid absorbent. The vapor is absorbed by an absorbent at relatively low temperature and ejected as the absorbent temperature is raised. A set of one way valves limits flow to one direction. Major contributions are heat transfer requirements, molecular sieve-refrigerant matching, minimizing non-producing mass, solving thermal fatigue and shock problems, and applying this to automobile air-conditioning. The performance study shows energy savings up to fifty percent are possible, depending on engine load. A twenty percent energy savings with the vehicle tested with the air-conditioner in operation is average. The study also showed that less fuel is used with the windows open than with the air-conditioner operating.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air conditioning is a process by which air is cooled or heated, cleaned or filtered, and circulated or recirculated. Air conditioning had become a standard option on most vehicle for enhancing comfort and safety. Most of automotives air conditioning system, the compressor is a belt-driven coupled to the engine. This means the cycling rate is directly related to the engine speed. Based on the situation, the air conditioning test rig was built to understand clearly about the air conditioning system including the vapor compression refrigeration cycle in the system and the function of each component in the system. There are four locations of temperature measurement were selected in order to develop the test rig. These locations are at the inlet and outlet of the compressor, the outlet of the condenser, and the inlet of the evaporator, respectively. The pressure was measured at the low pressure side and high pressure side which are at the outlet of the evaporator and inlet of the condenser, respectively. All of the parameters are measured during the cycle and were analyzed by using the properties table for refrigerant-134a and the p-h diagram for refrigerant-134a in order to determine the heat rejection, cooling effect, work of compressor and the coefficient of performance (COP) of the air conditioning system. The refrigerant mass flow rate was calculated based on the theory calculation. The heat rejection, cooling effect, work of compressor, refrigerant mass flow rate, and the COP of the air conditioning system were investigated at variable speed of compressor. The COP of the system was decreasing as the increasing of the compressor speed. The COP of the system at the compressor speed of 1500 rpm is 13.48 and was decreasing to the value of 10.33, 7.82, and 6.53 when the compressor speed was increasing to 2000 rpm, 2500 rpm, and 3000 rpm, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents the simulation of performance of air conditioning system in the vehicle. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the relationship of performance of a car air-conditioning system and with variable speed of the compressor. The thesis describes the fundamental of air-conditioning system, the way the system works and brief explanation of each component involved in air conditioning system. The simulation was done using Matlab Software to obtain the important parameters and data. The COP indicate the performance drop due to higher speed of the compressor. The speed of compressor affects the displacement volume of the refrigerant than affected the mass flow rate of the refrigerant and remain constant. Thus the cause of the mass flow rate make the cooling capacity slightly decrease when the speed of the compressor increases but for the power input of the compressor increases due to the increasing of the compressor speed. However the simulation does not consider the mass of the refrigerant. If the mass of the refrigerant is being considered it would give a better result for the simulation of the performance of the air conditioning system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable amount of research being conducted on thermoelectrics gives the impression that this technology will have a bright future in power generation and temperature control systems. At the present time, thermoelectrics is applied widely for temperature control, but has not yet replaced conventional air-conditioning systems due to its lower performance. Currently, approximately 10% of annual vehicle fuel consumption corresponds to the air-conditioning system used to cool the vehicle cabin. Conventional air-conditioning systems cool the entire cabin; however, about 73% of a vehicle’s mileage occurs while the driver is the only occupant. These facts indicate the need for a single occupant zone air-conditioning system. Thermoelectrics is one of the best technologies to meet this need because it is a very scalable system, wherein a miniature air-conditioning system can be built using a thermoelectric cooler. The current project discusses the optimization of a counter flow air-to-air thermoelectric air conditioner (TEAC) system. The work utilizes a newly developed optimal design theory and dimensional analysis technique, which allows for optimization of thermoelectric parameters simultaneously. Applying this method on a unit cell located at the center of the TEAC system provides a simple way to study the optimum design and its feasibility; however, further studies are needed to simulate the optimum design of an entire TEAC system from given inlet parameters (i.e., hot and cold air mass flow rates and ambient temperatures). The analytical model, therefore, is built by combining optimal design and thermal isolation methods so that the thermoelectric parameters of the whole system can be simulated and optimized. Based on the designed models, two experiments (one for the unit cell and the other for the whole system) are conducted in order to study the accuracy of the analytical models. Although the analytical model was built based on thermoelectric ideal equations, the results show good agreements with the experiments. These agreements are mainly due to the use of thermoelectric effective material properties, which are obtained from the measured maximum thermoelectric module parameters. The validation of the analytical model provides an uncomplicated method to study the optimum design at given inputs.
