Book Synopsis A Perennial Problem by : Susan Winter
Download or read book A Perennial Problem written by Susan Winter and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judy Lenox lies bludgeoned to death in her neatly tended flower bed. She had been the apple of her father’s eye, mayor of Tallahassee, mother of two young children, and a successful businesswoman. Judy’s teenage lawn-boy hated her. Every time he had worked for her, he had walked away humiliated. Three other teenage boys cannot explain what they were doing taking a dead woman’s car for a joy ride. Because of Judy, her former business partner had lost his business and family. She had fired the fair-minded planning commissioner who had served Tallahassee for 24 years. Her older stepbrother, when a young boy, had had to wrap his bed pillow around his head to muffle out his mother’s inconsolable crying. Judy’s mother had stolen his father away. His father had little time for him and his sister after Judy was born. Who else had this popular politician maligned? Detective Bailey McCall, slowly and with southern gentleness, sifts through diverse lives in Tallahassee and finds a crosshatch of motives for Judy’s murder. Did corrupt politics, business dealings, juvenile hormones, or two generations of family dysfunction cause this loving mother to be struck down?

Book Synopsis Left Behind: The Public Education Crisis in the United States by : Paul L. Jalbert
Download or read book Left Behind: The Public Education Crisis in the United States written by Paul L. Jalbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the harmful influences that the cultural, social, economic, political and ideological dimensions, in current ‘American’ society, have upon the delivery of elementary, secondary and university education. It examines the effects of poverty, funding at the local, state and federal levels and racial and ethnic discrimination. Arguing against the continuation of standardized testing—an ill-conceived methodology to measure the performance of children—the author advocates more one-on-one teaching and evaluation. He charges that students’ rights to education are not respected and, in elementary and high school, receive little in the way of instruction that translates into life skills and proposes what some of those skills should be. A critique of the extreme ethnocentric approach to education in the United States, Left Behind advocates strong instruction in the Humanities and foreign languages and the establishment of education abroad as a permanent program in high school and university. The author identifies Capitalism as the basic influence that, in the form of employing ‘business model’ constructs, has slowly transformed our children into obedient consumers. Physical Education has waned and become a major contributor to adolescent obesity. Seeking to replace children’s complacency with critical thinking instruction, the author demonstrates how the corporate mass media occupy their minds. He also fears the erosion of the profession of teaching by an ‘online’ instruction frenzy. The book explores the possibilities for a viable nation-wide education institution, in which decision-making is in the hands of teachers, parents and education experts, instead of politicians and business people. The remedies that could be taken up by ordinary people are accessible at the commonsense level; what prevents change are the lack of political will and economic greed, bolstered by the ideological power of the mass media.

Book Synopsis Reality and Mystical Experience by : F. Samuel Brainard
Download or read book Reality and Mystical Experience written by F. Samuel Brainard and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to our modern disillusionment with any claims to absolute truth regarding morality or reality, this book offers a conceptual approach for discussing absolutes without denying either the relevance of divergent religious and philosophical teachings or the evidence supporting postmodern and poststructuralist critiques. Case studies of mysticism within Advaita-Vedānta Hinduism, Mādhyamika Buddhism, and Nicene Christianity demonstrate the value of this approach and offer many fresh insights into the metaphysical presuppositions of these religions as well as into the nature and value of mystical experience. Like Douglas Hofstadter's Gōdel, Escher, Bach, this book finds ultimate reality to be rationally graspable only as an eternal fugue of pattern and paradox. Yet it does not so much counter other philosophical views as provide a conceptual tool for understanding and classifying incommensurable views.
