Book excerpt: This report describes the complete design, theory, and experimental statistics of a self-synchronizing, biorthogonal coded PCM telemetry system for space communications. By selecting a proper code set, word synchronization is acquired without using a parallel channel and is maintained at a signal-to-noise ratio below 4 db. With the code's property of comma freedom, word synchronization can be achieved with a circuit requiring only a few logic modules. With the use of this circuit, signal detection can be performed in real time without the use of a computer. The measured probability of word error correspond to a signal-to-noise that is within 1 db of theoretical predictions; this is 3 db better than is obtain with the standard PCM systems now used on spacecraft.

Contract effort can be grouped under research and development of airborne instrumentation systems, study and analysis programs, rocket and balloon field programs, and evaluation testing of telemetry components. Instrumentation systems developed have included a programmable PCM encoder, a programmable data selector, slow scan television, preflight calibrator and a recovery beacon system. Studies have been conducted on uses of the TDRSS system and analysis has been made of the signal-to-noise ratio of the Aeronomy type sphere telemetry system. Rocket field programs have been involved with Field Widened Interferometer, Aeronomy, Energy Campaign, Tracer, Solar Proton Events, Auroral-E, Brazilian Ionospheric Modifications Experiment and Sensor Ejection Systems while Balloon field programs have been in support of an Extreme Ultra Violet Experiment. New testing procedures involving vacuum testing, RF power measurements and temperature monitoring is mentioned along with reference to the number of components tested.

Book excerpt: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) has developed a method of applying data compression to the pulse coded modulation (PCM) telemetry bit stream from Apollo spacecraft. The compression could be applied to the data transmission on the link between the Manned Space Flight Network (MSFN) sites and Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to give a savings in realized telephone cable capacity and to transmit more information to Mission Control. The method of data transmission developed permits all the data in the 51.2 kbps bit stream from the Command Service Module (CSM) or the Lunar Module (LM) to be sent in real time over two 2.4-kbps voice-data-quality telephone lines. Very basically, the system uses a zero order predictor with a variable window to screen out redundant data; run length encoding is used to encode the location sequence, and '2-9' encoding is used to encode the data values. Combining these two coding schemes results in 88 bits per frame, on the average. This technique requires modification of the present computer software only; it does not require any hardware changes. A major problem related to the development, test, and orbital monitoring of this spacecraft was the quick and accurate evaluation of the telemetry data. The problem was solved by incorporating an automatic data processing system as an integral part of the spacecraft telemetry test stand. Two such systems were utilized in the integration, test, and prelaunch phases and for orbital monitoring throughout the scheduled 100-day satellite lifetime.
