Book Synopsis A Patchwork Fish Tale by : Stewart Moskowitz
Download or read book A Patchwork Fish Tale written by Stewart Moskowitz and published by Stewart Moskowitz Media. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This aquatic tale for children takes place in an usual aquarium full of duck fish, hippo fish, tiger fish, and one very large and hungry fish. The story was first published in 1982, and was the creation of artist and author Stewart Moskowitz, who is best known for his fanciful and lighthearted paintings of animals. The book was part of a four book series, each volume's story being inspired by a Moskowitz painting on its cover. None of the four paintings had been intended to relate to a book, but when asked by Simon and Schuster to create stories, the artist wrote his first books. Patchwork Fish is arguably the most compelling of them. In this new edition, the rebuilding of every color and every detail was directed by the author, with the goal of creating an improved version of the original, but without major changes. The restored pictures are vibrant and crisp, with some occasional revisions of coloring, but in general very closely matched to the original. The text is almost unchanged, with just a few very slight alterations, mostly of punctuation. Like all Moskowitz stories, you can expect a happy ending. A 28-page story, published by Stewart Moskowitz Media.

Book Synopsis Story Writing in a Nursing Home by : Martha A John
Download or read book Story Writing in a Nursing Home written by Martha A John and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the belief that older people have good stories to tell, Story Writing in a Nursing Home was developed as part of a volunteer teaching service to a nursing home. Graduate students who were learning to teach this special population conducted story writing activities with older adults and found that even the frail elderly who are confined to nursing centers provided a unique perspective about events that emphasize the lasting verities in life. The idea of a patchwork was derived from one of the lessons taught and was suggested by one of the older participants who said, “We’re sort of like a patchwork quilt.” The information, memories, and humor the elderly see in situations is worth recording. In addition, Story Writing in a Nursing Home emphasizes the way to develop the mental stimulation that is so important for physical well being. This sensitive and insightful book provides a lesson plan outline and the type of content that was used as an example. It also provides a running commentary in the form of a diary that tells how to begin a teaching program for nursing center residents. Students and professionals interested in implementing a similar program can use these ideas for planning and for organizing the use of student help to better serve the population. Fascinating reading, this book includes stories by frail elderly people, lesson plans, tips on working with administrators in a nursing center, and reasons for providing instruction. Teachers, volunteers, librarians, gerontology/sociology students, and others concerned with the well-being of the elderly will refer often to this instructive volume.

Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR by New York Public Library • Kirkus Reviews • Booklist • Publishers Weekly In this gorgeous debut graphic novel, fairy tales are the only way one boy can communicate with his Vietnamese immigrant parents. But how will he find the words to tell them that he’s gay? A powerful read about family, identity and the enduring magic of stories. “One of the most astounding graphic novels of the year" –Entertainment Weekly Tien and his mother may come from different cultures—she’s an immigrant from Vietnam still struggling with English; he’s been raised in America—but through the fairy tales he checks out from the local library, those differences are erased. But as much as Tien’s mother’s English continues to improve as he reads her tales of love, loss, and travel across distant shores, there’s one conversation that still eludes him—how to come out to her and his father. Is there even a way to explain what he’s going through in Vietnamese? And without a way to reveal his hidden self, how will his parents ever accept him? This beautifully illustrated graphic novel speaks to the complexity of family and how stories can bring us together even when we don’t know the words. “A lyrical masterpiece.” –BuzzFeed

Book Synopsis Company Confessions by : Christopher Moran
Download or read book Company Confessions written by Christopher Moran and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Argo and Fair Game, "a lively, absorbing investigation." —Library Journal Spies are supposed to keep quiet, never betraying their agents or discussing their operations. Somehow, this doesn’t apply to the CIA, whose former officers have written memoirs commanding huge advances and attracting enormous publicity. As an intelligence service dependent on its ability to protect sensitive information, however, it’s no surprise that the CIA has fought back. In Company Confessions, award-winning author Christopher Moran digs deep into this tumultuous relationship between the CIA and former agents who try to go public about their careers. He delves into the motivations of spies like CIA officer Valerie Plame, whose identity was leaked by the Bush White House and who reportedly received $2.5 million for her book Fair Game, and exposes the politics and practices of the CIA and its Publications Review Board, including breaking into publishing houses and secretly authorizing pro-agency “memoirs.” Drawing on interviews; the private correspondence of such legendary spies as Allen Dulles, William Colby, and Richard Helms; and declassified CIA files, Company Confessions examines why America’s spies are so willing to share their stories, the damage inflicted when they leak the nation’s secrets, and the fine line between censorship on the grounds of security and censorship for the sake of reputation.
