Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the appropriate raw material inventory strategy for a make-to-order manufacturing company? As companies grow in size and the business environment changes over time, many companies adapt their operating policies to remain competitive. However, some policies, such as raw material inventory policies, are left untouched as "legacies" of the company's past due to lower priorities or lack of adequate data. These raw material inventory policies are of particular importance to manufacturing firms, especially those that often operate at maximum capacity or have seasonality in demand. This research proposes a raw material inventory policy evaluation tool that allows a company to understand how certain key performance indicators are affected by various changes in its inventory policy and helps the company devise a strategy. This evaluation tool can then guide the company towards a better inventory policy in the absence of cost information and shows the results in terms of number of events. The company can then adjust various replenishment policies depending on the product's demand characteristics. In addition, the research demonstrates that inventory policy changes can be used to partially overcome supplier service level declines and demand variability.

Book excerpt: In today's competitive environment, most companies tend to adopt a hybrid manufacturing strategy to provide more reliable services to a wide range of customers. Based on a real-world case study, we investigate a production-inventory-distribution system of a company in a complex supply chain. In such a system, the company manage production, inventory, and transportation decisions, where different products are produced at mills or stored at external warehouses are shipped to customers using multiple modes of transportation. At a tactical planning level, the company wants to know which production strategies, including make to stock (MTS), make to order (MTO) or vendor managed inventory (VMI) strategy, should be chosen for each customer and then how to coordinate the production, inventory, and distribution activities according to the strategy assigned to the customers. Moreover, the objective is not only to optimize its cost, but also satisfy the VMI customers on time and keep the target service level for MTO customers. The company can also control the purchase acceptance rate for MTS customers to better use the capacity. We develop a rolling horizon planning approach to deal with the dynamics of customers' demands under different forecasting scenarios. To check the validity and efficacy of the developed model, we perform numerical experiment under both static and rolling horizon based on adapted data from a real-world application from the pulp and paper industry in Canada. We also highlight some insights into the impact of various problem parameters on the tactical and operational decisions that can be considered for practical implementation.

Book excerpt: This thesis includes the analysis of the existing theoretical knowledge in inventory planning from a lot sizing model approach and aims to identify the most suitable order generation method in the Make-To-Stock production of an electronic assembly company with production site located in Estonia. Inventory management is a key issue in the whole manufacturing process and in particular in the setting of the manufacturing lot sizes. Great emphasis should be placed on the optimization of the costs and on the search of the appropiate production orders. In production planning and control, models are needed to set the basis of a given service; at what times and in what lot size should be produced different products on one machine. The aim is not only to formulate a feasible production plan, but also to identify based on a cost evaluation, the best possible production plan. For this purpose, the cost manufacturing, warehousing and setup costs are taken into account. The optimal lot sizing model will be chosen according to the conditions of the concerned enterprise production system. Thus, regarding the current system, an optimal proposal will be made attempting to fit in the already established planning process. Moreover, in order to test the suitability of the chosen lot sizing model, some cost calculations will take place. When it comes to achieve better results and stand out at the top of the competitive field there is a need of a continuous improvement attitude. Only by broadening the approach, will a company be capable of keeping the pace with an incessant world.

Book excerpt: In many industrial companies, strategic developments are predominantly based on corporate marketing decisions with manufacturing being forced to react to these at the back end of the process. In Manufacturing Strategy, Terry Hill sets out to show how decisions over manufacturing should form part of the strategic direction of the company as a whole. Based on the first edition, the book has been updated with new material and new case studies including the service elements of manufacturing that reflect the author's ongoing programme of consultancy and research in this field.

Book excerpt: The rapid growth of the Print on Demand (POD) business has necessitated a capacity expansion plan that spans the next five years. After analyzing sales data it was determined that more titles are selling in larger quantities. For these titles, the current make-to-order model does not represent the optimal manufacturing and fulfillment strategy. This preliminary insight led to the realization that an inventory model that uses demand forecasts and a cost analysis for each title should be used to determine the optimal ordering quantity for qualifying titles, in an initiative called high volume pre-builds. Additionally, an initiative called predictive manufacturing should be used concurrently to provide customer experience improvements to titles that sell in large quantities but do not qualify for high volume pre-builds. The development of a hybrid make-to-stock, make-to-order (MTS-MTO) production optimization model will lead to pre-building between 1.1M and 2.1M retail units per year, but could be scaled upward. Pre-building allows for cost savings through economies of scale in manufacturing and through transportation savings based on inventory placement and network topology. An additional 300K+ annual retail titles will be eligible for predictive manufacturing, which will also benefit from transportation savings. The customer experience improvements alone would make these initiatives worth pursuing even if they were NPV neutral or slightly negative. However, they are a clear win when also considering overall integration and cost savings. These initiatives will drive a lower cost structure for book manufacturing that benefits all stakeholders (Amazon, authors, and customers), which will lead to the continued, rapid growth of POD.

Book excerpt: This book is written for people in manufacturing management who recognize that they need to know what computer-based production and inventory management systems can do for them. It does not deal with computers or computer programs per se. But just as a book about travel today could not ignore the airlines or their influence on travel, it is about production and inventory management today, when computers are widely available. This book was also designed to be used for college-level education. It can be used as the text for a short course in production and inventory management or as a supplementary text for a mnufacturing or computer systems course of broader scope. - Preface.

It is an intersection of two traditional areas: supply chain management and scheduling. In this book, the authors provide a comprehensive coverage of supply chain scheduling. The book covers applications, solution algorithms for solving related problems, evaluation of supply chain conflicts, and models for encouraging cooperation between decision makers. Supply chain scheduling studies detailed scheduling issues within supply chains, as motivated by a variety of applications in the real world. Topics covered by the book include: Coordinated decision making in centralized supply chains, including integrated production and distribution scheduling, joint scheduling and product pricing, and coordinated subcontracting and scheduling. Coordination and competition issues in decentralized supply chains, including conflict and cooperation within scheduling decisions made by different parties in supply chains, and both cooperative and non-cooperative supply chain scheduling games. The book describes a variety of representative problems within each of these topics. The authors define these problems mathematically, describe corresponding applications, and introduce solution methods for solving each problem to improve supply chain performance.
