Book excerpt: This book brings together current research direction in the mapping of dynamic programming recurrence equations for Knapsack Type problems, which include Unbounded Knapsack Problem, 0/1 Knapsack Problem, Subset Sum Problem, Change Making Problem, onto so-called regular parallel architectures. In particular, it focuses on heuristic and more formal techniques for mapping. The text is based on substantially revised papers published by the authors and their colleagues in the literature but re-written to provide an overall view of the subject area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirteen years have passed since the seminal book on knapsack problems by Martello and Toth appeared. On this occasion a former colleague exclaimed back in 1990: "How can you write 250 pages on the knapsack problem?" Indeed, the definition of the knapsack problem is easily understood even by a non-expert who will not suspect the presence of challenging research topics in this area at the first glance. However, in the last decade a large number of research publications contributed new results for the knapsack problem in all areas of interest such as exact algorithms, heuristics and approximation schemes. Moreover, the extension of the knapsack problem to higher dimensions both in the number of constraints and in the num ber of knapsacks, as well as the modification of the problem structure concerning the available item set and the objective function, leads to a number of interesting variations of practical relevance which were the subject of intensive research during the last few years. Hence, two years ago the idea arose to produce a new monograph covering not only the most recent developments of the standard knapsack problem, but also giving a comprehensive treatment of the whole knapsack family including the siblings such as the subset sum problem and the bounded and unbounded knapsack problem, and also more distant relatives such as multidimensional, multiple, multiple-choice and quadratic knapsack problems in dedicated chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a full-scale presentation of all methods and techniques available for the solution of the Knapsack problem. This most basic combinatorial optimization problem appears explicitly or as a subproblem in a wide range of optimization models with backgrounds such diverse as cutting and packing, finance, logistics or general integer programming. This monograph spans the range from a comprehensive introduction of classical algorithmic methods to the unified presentation of the most recent and advanced results in this area many of them originating from the authors. The chapters dealing with particular versions and extensions of the Knapsack problem are self-contained to a high degree and provide a valuable source of reference for researchers. Due to its simple structure, the Knapsack problem is an ideal model for introducing solution techniques to students of computer science, mathematics and economics. The first three chapters give an in-depth treatment of several basic techniques, making the book also suitable as underlying literature for courses in combinatorial optimization and approximation.

Book excerpt: Bio-inspired computational algorithms are always hot research topics in artificial intelligence communities. Biology is a bewildering source of inspiration for the design of intelligent artifacts that are capable of efficient and autonomous operation in unknown and changing environments. It is difficult to resist the fascination of creating artifacts that display elements of lifelike intelligence, thus needing techniques for control, optimization, prediction, security, design, and so on. Bio-Inspired Computational Algorithms and Their Applications is a compendium that addresses this need. It integrates contrasting techniques of genetic algorithms, artificial immune systems, particle swarm optimization, and hybrid models to solve many real-world problems. The works presented in this book give insights into the creation of innovative improvements over algorithm performance, potential applications on various practical tasks, and combination of different techniques. The book provides a reference to researchers, practitioners, and students in both artificial intelligence and engineering communities, forming a foundation for the development of the field.

Book excerpt: This book covers controller tuning techniques from conventional to new optimization methods for diverse control engineering applications. Classical controller tuning approaches are presented with real-world challenges faced in control engineering. Current developments in applying optimization techniques to controller tuning are explained. Case studies of optimization algorithms applied to controller tuning dealing with nonlinearities and limitations like the inverted pendulum and the automatic voltage regulator are presented with performance comparisons. Students and researchers in engineering and optimization interested in optimization methods for controller tuning will utilize this book to apply optimization algorithms to controller tuning, to choose the most suitable optimization algorithm for a specific application, and to develop new optimization techniques for controller tuning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We shall describe an [sic] parallel algorithm for solving the knapsack feasibilty problem, also known as the subset sum problem. The use of a random branching technique is described and its implementation on a parallel processor is discussed. Computational results show this to be an effective method for solving large problems. Using this approach we have solved problems with as many as 2 million variables in an average of 800 seconds on the Sequent Symmetry parallel processor. Furthermore, a coarse parallelization overcomes some of the problems that are present when serial algorithms are used to solve the knapsack problem."

Book excerpt: Here is a state of art examination on exact and approximate algorithms for a number of important NP-hard problems in the field of integer linear programming, which the authors refer to as ``knapsack.'' Includes not only the classical knapsack problems such as binary, bounded, unbounded or binary multiple, but also less familiar problems such as subset-sum and change-making. Well known problems that are not usually classified in the knapsack area, including generalized assignment and bin packing, are also covered. The text fully develops an algorithmic approach without losing mathematical rigor.
