Book Synopsis Numerical Analysis of Pressure-based Coupled Heat and Moisture Flow in Unsaturated Porous Media Using the Integrated Finite Difference Method by : Derek M. Li

Li and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Integrated Finite Difference (IFD) technique is developed to solve the governing differential equations of the pressure-based model for transient coupled heat and moisture transfer in unsaturated porous media. The technique accommodates complex geometries, wide variation of nonlinear material properties, and Neuman and Dirichlet boundary conditions. A computer code, TRUCHAMP, which incorporates the IFD formulation is presented. Validation of the program has been made by producing mass and energy conservative solutions. Additionally, comparison of results obtained from the TRUCHAMP with those generated by independently developed numerical models yielded excellent correlation. With proper characterization of the material properties and boundary conditions, TRUCHAMP can be employed as a useful tool in assessing the thermal and hydraulic response of the prototype disposal vault for high-level nuclear waste. This program will be useful in solving many heat and mass transport problems encountered in the field of heat storage and underground power cables.

Download or read book Validation of Coupled Heat and Moisture Flow Program in Unsaturated Porous Media written by Saleha Hussain and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An historical overview of the developments of heat and moisture flow analyses in unsaturated media is compiled with specific reference to works by Philip and deVries, Milly, and Thomas and King. The potential/temperature based governing equations are developed independently and compared with those by other researchers. A numerical solution, TRUCHAMP, based on the integrated finite difference method, was developed to solve the equations for coupled heat and moisture flow problems. The model is verified by comparing its results against those established by other researchers. Excellent correlation is achieved for the base case defined by a set of boundary conditions and material parameters established for Leighton Buzzard medium sand. Sensitivity analyses are conducted on eight material parameters established in the governing equations and their results correlated with the base case at plus/minus twenty percent changes. This work serves as essential information for preliminary design of nuclear waste repositories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport phenomena in porous media continues to be a field which attracts intensive research activity. This is primarily due to the fact that it plays an important and practical role in a large variety of diverse scientific applications. Transport Phenomena in Porous Media II covers a wide range of the engineering and technological applications, including both stable and unstable flows, heat and mass transfer, porosity, and turbulence.Transport Phenomena in Porous Media II is the second volume in a series emphasising the fundamentals and applications of research in porous media. It contains 16 interrelated chapters of controversial, and in some cases conflicting, research, over a wide range of topics. The first volume of this series, published in 1998, met with a very favourable reception. Transport Phenomena in Porous Media II maintains the original concept including a wide and diverse range of topics, whilst providing an up-to-date summary of recent research in the field by its leading practitioners.

Book Synopsis Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Processes of Fractured Media by : O. Stephanson
Download or read book Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Processes of Fractured Media written by O. Stephanson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-02-10 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work brings together the results, information and data that emerged from an international cooperative project, DECOVALEX, 1992-1995. This project was concerned with the mathematical and experimental studies of coupled thermo(T) -hydro(H) -mechanical(M) processes in fractured media related to radioactive waste disposal. The book presents, for the first time, the systematic formulation of mathematical models of the coupled T-H-M processes of fractured media, their validation against theoretical bench-mark tests, and experimental studies at both laboratory and field scales. It also presents, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of continuum, and discrete approaches to the study of the problems of (as well as a complete description of), the computer codes applied to the studies. The first two chapters provide a conceptual introduction to the coupled T-H-M processes in fractured media and the DECOVALEX project. The next seven chapters give a state-of-the-art survey of the constitutive models of rock fractures and formulation of coupled T-H-M phenomena with continuum and discontinuum approaches, and associated numerical methods. A study on the three generic Bench-Mark Test problems and six Test Case problems of laboratory and field experiments are reported in chapters 10 to 18. Chapter 19 contains lessons learned during the project. The research contained in this book will be valuable for designers, practising engineers and national waste management officials who are concerned with planning, design and performance, and safety assessments of radioactive waste repositories. Researchers and postgraduate students working in this field will also find the book of particular relevance.
Book Synopsis Modeling Transport Phenomena in Porous Media with Applications by : Malay K. Das
Download or read book Modeling Transport Phenomena in Porous Media with Applications written by Malay K. Das and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ensemble of six major chapters, an introduction, and a closure on modeling transport phenomena in porous media with applications. Two of the six chapters explain the underlying theories, whereas the rest focus on new applications. Porous media transport is essentially a multi-scale process. Accordingly, the related theory described in the second and third chapters covers both continuum‐ and meso‐scale phenomena. Examining the continuum formulation imparts rigor to the empirical porous media models, while the mesoscopic model focuses on the physical processes within the pores. Porous media models are discussed in the context of a few important engineering applications. These include biomedical problems, gas hydrate reservoirs, regenerators, and fuel cells. The discussion reveals the strengths and weaknesses of existing models as well as future research directions.

Book Synopsis Computational Fluid Dynamics in Food Processing by : Da-Wen Sun
Download or read book Computational Fluid Dynamics in Food Processing written by Da-Wen Sun and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since many processes in the food industry involve fluid flow and heat and mass transfer, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides a powerful early-stage simulation tool for gaining a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the performance of food processing, allowing engineers to test concepts all the way through the development of a process or system. Published in 2007, the first edition was the first book to address the use of CFD in food processing applications, and its aims were to present a comprehensive review of CFD applications for the food industry and pinpoint the research and development trends in the development of the technology; to provide the engineer and technologist working in research, development, and operations in the food industry with critical, comprehensive, and readily accessible information on the art and science of CFD; and to serve as an essential reference source to undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers in universities and research institutions. This will continue to be the purpose of this second edition. In the second edition, in order to reflect the most recent research and development trends in the technology, only a few original chapters are updated with the latest developments. Therefore, this new edition mostly contains new chapters covering the analysis and optimization of cold chain facilities, simulation of thermal processing and modeling of heat exchangers, and CFD applications in other food processes.
