Book excerpt: Prostate segmentation is a required step in determining the volume of a prostate, which is very important in the diagnosis and the treatment of prostate cancer. In the past, radiologists manually segment the two-dimensional cross-sectional ultrasound images. Typically, it is necessary for them to outline at least a hundred of cross-sectional images in order to get an accurate estimate of the prostate℗s volume. This approach is very time-consuming. To be more efficient in accomplishing this task, an automated procedure has to be developed. However, because of the quality of the ultrasound image, it is very difficult to develop a computerized method for defining boundary of an object in an ultrasound image. The goal of this thesis is to find an automated segmentation algorithm for detecting the boundary of the prostate in ultrasound images. As the first step in this endeavour, a semi-automatic segmentation method is designed. This method is only semi-automatic because it requires the user to enter four initialization points, which are the data required in defining the initial contour. The discrete dynamic contour (DDC) algorithm is then used to automatically update the contour. The DDC model is made up of a set of connected vertices. When provided with an energy field that describes the features of the ultrasound image, the model automatically adjusts the vertices of the contour to attain a maximum energy. In the proposed algorithm, Mallat℗s dyadic wavelet transform is used to determine the energy field. Using the dyadic wavelet transform, approximate coefficients and detailed coefficients at different scales can be generated. In particular, the two sets of detailed coefficients represent the gradient of the smoothed ultrasound image. Since the gradient modulus is high at the locations where edge features appear, it is assigned to be the energy field used to drive the DDC model. The ultimate goal of this work is to develop a fully-automatic segmentation algorithm. Since only the initialization stage requires human supervision in the proposed semi-automatic initialization algorithm, the task of developing a fully-automatic segmentation algorithm is reduced to designing a fully-automatic initialization process. Such a process is introduced in this thesis. In this work, the contours defined by the semi-automatic and the fully-automatic segmentation algorithm are compared with the boundary outlined by an expert observer. Tested using 8 sample images, the mean absolute difference between the semi-automatically defined and the manually outlined boundary is less than 2.5 pixels, and that between the fully-automatically defined and the manually outlined boundary is less than 4 pixels. Automated segmentation tools that achieve this level of accuracy would be very useful in assisting radiologists to accomplish the task of segmenting prostate boundary much more efficiently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death of women worldwide. Accurate lesion boundary detection is important for breast cancer diagnosis. Since many crucial features for discriminating benign and malignant lesions are based on the contour, shape, and texture of the lesion, an accurate segmentation method is essential for a successful diagnosis. Ultrasound is an effective screening tool and primarily useful for differentiating benign and malignant lesions. However, due to inherent speckle noise and low contrast of breast ultrasound imaging, automatic lesion segmentation is still a challenging task. This research focuses on developing a novel, effective, and fully automatic lesion segmentation method for breast ultrasound images. By incorporating empirical domain knowledge of breast structure, a region of interest is generated. Then, a novel enhancement algorithm (using a novel phase feature) and a newly developed neutrosophic clustering method are developed to detect the precise lesion boundary. Neutrosophy is a recently introduced branch of philosophy that deals with paradoxes, contradictions, antitheses, and antinomies. When neutrosophy is used to segment images with vague boundaries, its unique ability to deal with uncertainty is brought to bear. In this work, we apply neutrosophy to breast ultrasound image segmentation and propose a new clustering method named neutrosophic l-means. We compare the proposed method with traditional fuzzy c-means clustering and three other well-developed segmentation methods for breast ultrasound images, using the same database. Both accuracy and time complexity are analyzed. The proposed method achieves the best accuracy (TP rate is 94.36%, FP rate is 8.08%, and similarity rate is 87.39%) with a fairly rapid processing speed (about 20 seconds). Sensitivity analysis shows the robustness of the proposed method as well. Cases with multiple-lesions and severe shadowing effect (shadow areas having similar intensity values of the lesion and tightly connected with the lesion) are not included in this study.

Book excerpt: Due to more or less deviations in the imaging system, there will be noise in the image, which makes the image segmentation inaccurate. To divide a natural image into a more accurate binary image, the target and background of the image are effectively separated to achieve a more effective segmentation result. Therefore, this paper proposes an image segmentation algorithm combining a saliency map and neutrosophic set (NS) theory. First, to overcome the problem of weak edges in the image, we highlight the details and use the guided filter to filter the various channels of the natural image. Then, the initial saliency map is generated. After the weighted superposition of the initial saliency map, the local entropy map and the gray scale map, the final saliency map can be generated using the nonlinear function, and it can effectively highlight the foreground information of the image. Second, the saliency map is transformed to the NS domain and interpreted by three subsets: true (T), indeterminate (I), and false (F). According to NS theory, the indeterminacy is reduced, and the segmentation results are finally obtained by using the method of threshold. Various experiments were done and compared with other state-of-the-art approaches. These experiments demonstrate the effect of the proposed work, which is fast and effective for de-noising.

Book excerpt: It is well-known that speckle is a multiplicative noise that degrades image quality and the visual evaluation in ultrasound imaging. This necessitates the need for robust despeckling techniques for both routine clinical practice and teleconsultation. The goal for this book is to introduce the theoretical background (equations), the algorithmic steps, and the MATLABTM code for the following group of despeckle filters: linear filtering, nonlinear filtering, anisotropic diffusion filtering and wavelet filtering. The book proposes a comparative evaluation framework of these despeckle filters based on texture analysis, image quality evaluation metrics, and visual evaluation by medical experts, in the assessment of cardiovascular ultrasound images recorded from the carotid artery. The results of our work presented in this book, suggest that the linear local statistics filter DsFlsmv, gave the best performance, followed by the nonlinear geometric filter DsFgf4d, and the linear homogeneous mask area filter DsFlsminsc. These filters improved the class separation between the asymptomatic and the symptomatic classes (of ultrasound images recorded from the carotid artery for the assessment of stroke) based on the statistics of the extracted texture features, gave only a marginal improvement in the classification success rate, and improved the visual assessment carried out by two medical experts. A despeckle filtering analysis and evaluation framework is proposed for selecting the most appropriate filter or filters for the images under investigation. These filters can be further developed and evaluated at a larger scale and in clinical practice in the automated image and video segmentation, texture analysis, and classification not only for medical ultrasound but for other modalities as well, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images.
