After hunting gold in the Northwest and the Klondike he rode deep into the savage territory of Africa to slay the M’Limo, treacherous Matabele high priest. During the Boer War he performed many thrilling exploits as chief of Scouts. He was honored in the friendship of Lord Roberts, Theodore Roosevelt, Cecil Rhodes, and Dr. Jameson and received the highest honors of the British Empire. In this book he tells in full detail the fascinating story of his thrilling and varied career. “In real life he is more interesting than any of my heroes of romance”—SIR RIDER HAGGARD “I have seldom been as much taken with a narrative”—REAR ADMIRAL WM. S. SIMS, U.S.N. “I have read it all with enthralled interest”—THEODORE ROOSEVELT “England was never made by her statesmen; England was made by her adventurers.”—GENERAL GORDON.

This book was released on 2014-07-12 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is unabridged, original text of this infamous book. Might Is Right, or The Survival of the Fittest, is a book by pseudonymous author Ragnar Redbeard. First published in 1890, it heavily advocates social Darwinism, amoralism, and psychological hedonism. In Might is Right, Redbeard rejects conventional ideas of human and natural rights and argues that only strength or physical might can establish moral right (la Callicles). Libertarian historian James J. Martin called it "surely one of the most incendiary works ever to be published anywhere." Leo Tolstoy discussed the philosophy of Might Is Right in his 1897 essay What Is Art?: "The substance of this book, as it is expressed in the editor's preface, is that to measure "right" by the false philosophy of the Hebrew prophets and "weepful" Messiahs is madness. Right is not the offspring of doctrine, but of power. All laws, commandments, or doctrines as to not doing to another what you do not wish done to you, have no inherent authority whatever, but receive it only from the club, the gallows, and the sword. A man truly free is under no obligation to obey any injunction, human or divine. Obedience is the sign of the degenerate. Disobedience is the stamp of the hero. Men should not be bound by moral rules invented by their foes. The whole world is a slippery battlefield. Ideal justice demands that the vanquished should be exploited, emasculated, and scorned. The free and brave may seize the world. And, therefore, there should be eternal war for life, for land, for love, for women, for power, and for gold. The earth and its treasures is "booty for the bold." The author has evidently by himself, independently of Nietzsche, come to the same conclusions which are professed by the new artists."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the life and work of Mary Elizabeth Barber, a British-born settler scientist who lived in the Cape during the nineteenth century. It provides a lens into a range of subjects within the history of knowledge and science, gender and social history, postcolonial, critical heritage and archival studies. The book examines the international importance of the life and works of a marginalized scientist, the instrumentalisation of science to settlers' political concerns and reveals the pivotal but largely silenced contribution of indigenous African experts. Including a variety of material, visual and textual sources, this study explores how these artefacts are archived and displayed in museums and critically analyses their content and silences. The book traces Barber’s legacy across three continents in collections and archives, offering insights into the politics of memory and history-making. At the same time, it forges a nuanced argument, incorporating study of the North and South, the history of science and social history, and the past and the present.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Natural History, Vol. 3: A Foundation of Useful Knowledge of the Higher Animals of North America; Birds (Concluded) Whenever, during the hour just before sunset, you see a good-sized bird with dark plumage, long, sharp-pointed wings, and a big white spot on the under surface of each wing, wheeling, soaring, dropping and circling through the air, you may know that it Is a Nighthawk, catching insects. Its ight is graceful and free, and when on the aerial war-path it is a very industrious bird. Some people compare this bird on the wing with bats; but I see no resemblance save the bare fact of semi-nocturnal ight. This bird, and the other mem bers of its Family, are among the very few North American birds that capture winged insects high in mid-air, and for this reason, even if. There were no other, all the Goatsuckers should be most rigidly protected everywhere. The time for shooting the Nighthawk for sport has long gone by, never to return. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Game Shooting is a book full of both fascinating tales and practical advice on a kind of hunting that has gone quite seriously out of fashion. This is both a collection of stories about hunting big game and an instructional on topics of interest to the avid marksman. The book is separated into chapters, of which Clive Phillipps-Wolley has authored four, with guest contributors responsible for the remaining sections. Chapters vary in terms of scope, with some examining a single breed of game and others more broadly discussing a topic of interest to the hunting community. Specific topics detailed including arctic hunting, the stag of the Alps, the Scandinavian elk, the large game of Spain and Portugal, and several others. The book transitions to a series of instructional chapters that focus on setting up camps and transportation, selecting rifles and ammunition, and hints on preservation and taxidermy. The title is concluded by a detailed appendix. Big Game Shooting is a work that will appeal to the hunting enthusiast. The first-hand accounts of hunting expeditions that form the largest section of the book are entertaining and educational. The instructional chapters can be read both practically and as a text illuminating the history of hunting practices. While Clive Phillipps-Wolley receives credit as the primary author, all of the included writers provide meaningful contributions to the work. While the practice of shooting big game is less than highly regarded among environmentally concious individuals much of this advice will also help those "hunting" with a camera. The tales of hunting expeditions are entertaining, and the advice provided practical. Big Game Shooting is a worthwhile read. It is chock full of grim facts about the history of anthropophagy--man eating man! A rare glimpse of an astounding philosophy, this book has been excerpted from the original book "Might is Right", (1890) and has been condensed and edited for content.
