We consider correlation as a proxy fuuml;r measuring dependence and use for empirical study representative stock indices from emerging Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Turkey) and their counterparts from established markets (developed Europe and North America). A mixture of bivariate normal distributions models two market regimes, quiet and hectic, and allows explicit computation of the correlation coefficient in each of those regimes. Two statistical tests are introduced to answer the correlation stability question. The results are contradicting the market knowledge, as for all pairs, the null hypothesis of constant correlation could not be rejected.
