Book excerpt: The OPD Second Canadian Edition is an illustrated, theme-based dictionary for second-language learners. This four-colour dictionary defines words through pictures, and presents each new word in context. The OPD, along with its workbooks and many other components, can be used as a referencebook or as text for high school or adult ESL students at the beginner level. For years, the first Canadian edition of the OPD has been the industry leader among picture dictionaries. The second edition expands on the topics covered, providing more depth of vocabulary in the areas that matter most to students. The illustrations have been completely updated in a more realisticstyle that is visually appealing to adult learners. The second edition also contains two new features: Introductory Pages and Story Pages. The Introductory Pages have been added to the beginning of each theme to give lower-level students a basic overview of key vocabulary words, and to give a starting point for discussion and an introduction to thetheme for more advanced students. The Story Pages consist of a two-page spread at the end of each theme to help students use the words in context and practise their reading skills. The OPD is designed for use both in and out of the classroom. Speaking exercises are presented throughout the OPD to allow students to practise new vocabulary in pairs or small groups, while the pronunciation guide in the index allows students to check their pronunciation when they are studying ontheir own.

Book excerpt: "Forty lessons designed to introduce beginning students to the basic patterns and structures of Classical Chinese are taken from a number of pre-Han and Han texts selected to give students a grounding in exemplary Classical Chinese style. Two additional lessons use texts from later periods to help students appreciate the changes in written Chinese over the centuries. Each lesson consists of a text, a vocabulary list featuring discussions of meaning and usage, explanations of grammar, and explications of difficult passages. The standard modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean pronunciations are indicated for each character, making this a learning tool for native speakers of those languages as well. Appendices give suggestions for further readings, review common and significant words, explain the radical system, and provide Japanese kanbun readings for all the selections. Glossaries of all vocabulary items and pronunciation indexes for modern Chinese and Korean are also included."

Book Synopsis GB/T 17975.1-2010 English Translation of Chinese Standard by : https://www.codeofchina.com
Download or read book GB/T 17975.1-2010 English Translation of Chinese Standard written by https://www.codeofchina.com and published by https://www.codeofchina.com. This book was released on with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Part of GB/T 17975 specified the system layer of the coding. It was developed principally to support the combination of the video and audio coding methods defined in Part 2 and 3 of this Standard. The system layer supports six basic functions: a) the synchronization of multiple compressed streams on decoding; b) the interleaving of multiple compressed streams into a single stream; c) the initialization of buffering for decoding start up; d) continuous buffer management; e) time identification; A GB/T 17975.1 multiplexed bit stream is either a Transport Stream or a Program Stream. Both streams are constructed from PES packets and packets containing other necessary information. Both stream types support multiplexing of video and audio compressed streams from one program with a common time base. The Transport Stream additionally supports the multiplexing of video and audio compressed streams from multiple programs with independent time bases. For almost error-free environments the Program Stream is generally more appropriate, supporting software processing of program information. The Transport Stream is more suitable for use in environments where errors are likely. A GB/T 17975.1 multiplexed bit stream, whether a Transport Stream or a Program Stream, is constructed in two layers: the outermost layer is the system layer, and the innermost is the compression layer. The system layer provides the functions necessary for using one or more compressed data streams in a system. The video and audio parts of GB/T 17975 define the compression coding layer for audio and video data. Coding of other types of data is not contained in this Specification, but is supported by the system layer provided that the other types of data adhere to the constraints on multiplexing stream semantics defined in Section 2.7.
