Book excerpt: Given the recent apparent world-wide decline in amphibians, the current status of amphibian populations in the Western United States warrants serious attention. The tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum, is of particular concern since it is Colorado's only salamander species. A. tigrinum is most conspicuous in its larval stage in small bodies of water. The location of larval tiger salamander habitat in South Central Colorado (Alimosa, Chaffee, Custer, Fremont, and Gunnison Counties) was mapped, to better understand its geographic range. Analysis of sampling methods was also carried out, yielding improvements in the standard drop box method, as well as a new observational method for determining larval salamander density in small bodies of water. The new observational method is a replicable, easy, and inexpensive way to estimate larval tiger salamander density and determine population trends. Observations should occur at midday since larval tiger salamanders follow a daily cycle of activity that shows maximum activity around this hour. In the current study, the observational method proved to be comparable or superior to the drop box method in predicting larval densities (as determined by seining). The observational method is ideal for a long term monitoring program, and could yield information that is critical to conservation efforts.

It offers an understanding of statistical models as abstract representations of the various processes that give rise to a data set. Such an understanding is basic to the development of inference models tailored to specific sampling and ecological scenarios. The book begins by presenting the advantages of a Bayesian approach to statistics and introducing the WinBUGS software. It reviews the four most common statistical distributions: the normal, the uniform, the binomial, and the Poisson. It describes the two different kinds of analysis of variance (ANOVA): one-way and two- or multiway. It looks at the general linear model, or ANCOVA, in R and WinBUGS. It introduces generalized linear model (GLM), i.e., the extension of the normal linear model to allow error distributions other than the normal. The GLM is then extended contain additional sources of random variation to become a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) for a Poisson example and for a binomial example. The final two chapters showcase two fairly novel and nonstandard versions of a GLMM. The first is the site-occupancy model for species distributions; the second is the binomial (or N-) mixture model for estimation and modeling of abundance. They have caused mass die-offs of ectothermic vertebrates in wild and captive populations around the globe. There is evidence that this pathogen is emerging and responsible for population declines in certain locations. Considering that amphibians and freshwater turtles are suitable hosts and the most imperiled vertebrate taxa in the world, ranaviruses can have significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function. Additionally, many fish that are raised in aquaculture facilities and traded internationally are suitable hosts; thus, the potential economic impact of ranaviruses is significant. Ranaviruses also serve as a model for replication and gene function of large double-stranded DNA viruses. There is an urgent need to assemble the contemporary information on ranaviruses and provide guidance on how to assess their threats in populations. Through the Global Ranavirus Consortium, 24 experts from six countries were organize to write this volume, the first book on ranaviruses. The book begins with a discussion on the global extent of ranaviruses, case histories of infection and disease in ectothermic vertebrates, and current phylogeny. Basic principles of ranavirus ecology and evolution are covered next, with a focus on host-pathogen interactions and how the virus emerges in its environment. There are two chapters that will discuss the molecular biology of ranaviruses, host response to infection, and the genes responsible for immune system evasion. One chapter establishes standards for testing for infection and diagnosing ranaviral disease. The book ends by providing guidance on how to design ranavirus surveillance studies and analyze data to determine risk, and discussing the role of the Global Ranavirus Consortium in organizing research and outreach activities.
