Book Synopsis A New Renaissance by : David Lorimer
Download or read book A New Renaissance written by David Lorimer and published by Floris Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book diagnoses an urgent need for change and renewal in a period of crisis for philosophy, science and society. The Florentine Renaissance, some six hundred years ago, took a huge leap forward into realism, rationality and self-awareness. It was born out of the waning authority of medieval institutions and beliefs. We stand now at a similar junction in history. It is apparent to many that reductionist science with its materialist values -- the worldview that has driven modern culture for the last two centuries -- is losing credibility. Its objectives of growth and acquisition, and its guiding principles asserting that there is no intrinsic meaning to life or purpose in the cosmos, are now widely seen as creating an unsustainable world. The essays gathered in A New Renaissance are a cultural response to the failings of the materialist worldview. Contributions in the first part diagnose the sources of the crisis in today's world. The second section searches for a new understanding of consciousness and mind, based on findings in recent non-materialist philosophy. The third section looks to a renewal of spirituality beyond religion, aiming to recapture the personal depth and connection to the cosmos that materialism denies or ignores. The fourth section examines possible reforms in politics, economics and education to help bring forth a society that can sustain the flourishing of human beings in the globally interconnected world of the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extraordinarily rich and awesomely learned.... The complexity of its subject matter is here mastered in an exemplary fashion. The study offers detailed, concrete, and perceptive assessments of individual writers within a lucid and carefully balanced design.... As a work of striking originality as well as formidable yet lively scholarship, ... Green's book will become a central, even classic, text for students of Renaissance poetry and of a cardinal topos in the history of criticism and hermeneutics." -From the citation for the award of the Harry Levin Prize of the American Comparative Literature Association, 1982 "An outstanding example of learning fully commanded and applied with uncommon perception, a lively sense of historical continuity, and, not least important, productive familiarity with modern literary theory. In its breadth of knowledge, the interplay of literary history and theory, the maturity of its judgments and the urbanity of its style, Professor Greene's study is a most distinguished achievement of American scholarship." -From the citation for the award of the Annual James Russell Lowell Prize, given by the Modern Language Association of America, 1983

Book Synopsis The Renaissance Restored by : Matthew Hayes
Download or read book The Renaissance Restored written by Matthew Hayes and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsomely illustrated volume traces the intersections of art history and paintings restoration in nineteenth-century Europe. Repairing works of art and writing about them—the practices that became art conservation and art history—share a common ancestry. By the nineteenth century the two fields had become inseparably linked. While the art historical scholarship of this period has been widely studied, its restoration practices have received less scrutiny—until now. This book charts the intersections between art history and conservation in the treatment of Italian Renaissance paintings in nineteenth-century Europe. Initial chapters discuss the restoration of works by Giotto and Titian framed by the contemporary scholarship of art historians such as Jacob Burckhardt, G. B. Cavalcaselle, and Joseph Crowe that was redefining the earlier age. Subsequent chapters recount how paintings conservation was integrated into museum settings. The narrative uses period texts, unpublished archival materials, and historical photographs in probing how paintings looked at a time when scholars were writing the foundational texts of art history, and how contemporary restorers were negotiating the appearances of these works. The book proposes a model for a new conservation history, object-focused yet enriched by consideration of a wider cultural horizon.

Albala is the first to explore in detail the role of dietetic literature in the development of the European nation state. His book is a pleasure to read."—Melitta Weiss Adamson, editor of Food in the Middle Ages
