Charlie stood out from most dogs because he was a big, lovable huggy bear who made everyones life a little better by knowing him. Charlie worked for many years as a therapy dog and made a big difference in the lives of many sick children and the elderly. Charlie didnt have a mean bone in his bodylike all dogs, all he wanted was love. Charlie got it. Charlie was a lucky dog and those who knew him were even luckier. This story chronicles the adventures of Charlies lifefrom adoption to retirement and all the things in between. Children will enjoy getting to know Charlie and sharing in his adventures chapter by chapter. Readers will also learn a bit about caring for an animal: the commitment, care, and love animals need every single day. At the old age of 15 (105 dog years, that is) Charlie passed away comfortably in his sleep while living in Cancun, Mexico with his Mom, Dad, and little brother Donovan. If we all could live our lives like Charlie did, the world would be a better place. -MLW Proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit Citizens for Animal Protection and Caring Critters in Houston, Texas and the Irvine Animal Care Center in Irvine, California where Charlie was adopted.

Book excerpt: In these pages you will find inspiring, true stories of people who didn't have hope?until they had a home. Stories of children who gained identity and confidence for their future. Of families made stronger and healthier and prison inmates who are now giving back to their communities. Of entire communities bonding together around an ethic of hard work and mutual respect. Of denominational, political, and racial barriers falling with every swing of the hammer. Of a growing host of young people engaged in the quest to end poverty housing. And even some wonderful love stories. The end result is nothing less than the transformation of lives, communities, and families?one person, one home at a time. Which, of course, has always been the dream?to build more than houses. "Habitat for Humanity is building much more than houses. By building hope it is building relationships, strengthening communities, and nurturing families." ?Actor Paul Newman, Habitat supporter "Rosalynn and I believe in Habitat's integrity, effectiveness, and tremendous vision. With Habitat, we build more than houses. We build families, communities, and hope." ?Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter "I could have gone through my whole life bouncing back and forth on welfare. Habitat makes a difference, and allows people to be what God intended them to be instead of what their circumstances dictate." ?Missouri homeowner Terrie Robinson

On a visit to the museum, Charlie and Saima, in Year 5 at the village school, are given a statue's head of Janus to draw but as they hold it they are thrust back to Wicton in Roman times. Orcus, a cruel Roman tax collector, is involved in stealing thousands of denarii. Ruus, the son of the blacksmith Metallus, witnesses a fake ambush and murder, all part of an elaborate plot to steal thousands more. When the silver is stolen, it is buried in a clearing not far from town. Charlie, Saima and Ruus, not without some danger, unearth the bags. However, all three children become embroiled and they themselves become suspects 'on the run'. Whilst Metallus is imprisoned at the fort, they are trapped by Orcus in the temple, yet notice another hoard within. Charlie, always full of ideas, sees a way to trap the real culprits and sets out his plan. They must use the Janus head and go back to the future then return to free Ruus. Saima, truthful, stubborn and fast, runs to the fort to inform the authorities and just in the nick of time, soldiers arrive and arrest the true thieves. Charlie and Saima return to present day Wicton and when Alfie, a classmate, mentions a horse he had to draw carved on a brick from the temple, they set out on a treasure hunt. In the dead of night, they dig up a fortune at the museum building site but are immediately arrested. Back at school, they are marched into assembly. They expect the worst until Mr Blewin, the developer, springs a pleasant surprise.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered if you are really in control of your life? Or could it be that someone or something has been placed in front of a computer somewhere and is pushing buttons and sending messages to your brain? What really influences our daily decisions: friends, family, God, the government perhaps, or a dog? These are the questions Dr. Anthony Harding begins to ask himself shortly after arriving in San Diego. He's convinced that the only way his two daughters will ever overcome their mother's death and the stigma of her alcoholism and drug addiction and the only way to repair his own status as a dead-beat dad is to jump on a job offer that will move them as far away from Chicago's south side as possible. His expectations doesn't include being attracted to a pint-sized independent neighbor from Louisiana whose best friend seems to be a miniature chocolate poodle that appears to have a talent for making unusual things happen.

And since this two-in-one protective cover is strapped onto his back, Charlie carries his home with him everywhere. One day, while having a snail race with his friends—as snails like to do—there’s a terrible accident. As Charlie nears the finish line, the misplaced shoe of a little boy running through the garden comes down and breaks his shell. Charlie’s shell—and his home—are completely destroyed. To make matters worse, winter is coming and Charlie has nowhere to go. Charlie’s friends try to help him find a new home, but none seem to fit just right: they are too hard, too sticky, too sharp, or too flimsy. Will someone be able to help Charlie find a new home before winter? Featuring a story of friendship from author and illustrator Doris Lecher, A New House for Charlie teaches children about helping others and showing compassion and empathy when hurting another person, even if unintentionally. Appropriate for children ages 3 to 6. Parents and educators will like the lessons throughout the book and children will be able to relate to Charlie as he tries to find a new home.
