Book excerpt: Scheduled transportation networks give rise to very complex and large-scale networkoptimization problems requiring innovative solution techniques and ideas from mathematical optimization and theoretical computer science. Examples of scheduled transportation include bus, ferry, airline, and railway networks, with the latter being a prime application domain that provides a fair amount of the most complex and largest instances of such optimization problems. Scheduled transport optimization deals with planning and scheduling problems over several time horizons, and substantial progress has been made for strategic planning and scheduling problems in all transportation domains. This state-of-the-art survey presents the outcome of an open call for contributions asking for either research papers or state-of-the-art survey articles. We received 24 submissions that underwent two rounds of the standard peer-review process, out of which 18 were finally accepted for publication. The volume is organized in four parts: Robustness and Recoverability, Robust Timetabling and Route Planning, Robust Planning Under Scarce Resources, and Online Planning: Delay and Disruption Management.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of 128 papers presented in lectures during the international scientific symposium "Operations Research 2005" (OR 2005) held at the University of Bremen, September 7-9, 2005. This international conference took place under the auspices of the German Operations Research Society (GOR). The symposium had about 600 participants from countries all over the world. It attracted academics and practitioners working in various fields of Operations Research and provided them with the most recent advances in Operations Research as well as related areas in Economics, Mathematics, and Computer Science including the special interest streams Logistics and New Maritime Businesses. The program consisted of 3 plenary and 15 semi-plenary talks and about 400 contributed presentations selected by the program committee to be presented in 20 sections.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International ICST Conference on Theory and Practice of Algorithms in (Computer) Systems, TAPAS 2011, held in Rome, Italy, in April 2011. The 25 papers presented, including three short papers by invited speakers, were carefully reviewed and selected from 45 submissions. The papers all feature original research in the design, implementation and evaluation of algorithms with special focus on algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems, and to real-world applications, engineering and experimental analysis of algorithms - thus fostering the cooperation among researchers in computer science, networking, discrete mathematics, mathematical programming and operations research.

Book excerpt: Assembly lines are productive systems, which are very efficient for homogeneous products. In the automotive industry, an assembly line is used in the production of several vehicle variants, including numerous configurations, options, and add-ins. As a result, assembly lines must be at the same time specialized to provide high efficiency, but also flexible to allow the mass customization of the vehicles. In this book, the planning of assembly lines for uncertain demand is tackled and optimization algorithms are offered for the balancing of such lines. Building an assembly line is a commitment of several months or even years, it is understandable that the demand will fluctuate during the lifetime of an assembly line. New products are developed, others are removed from the market, and the decision of the final customer plays a role on the immediate demand. Therefore, the variation and uncertainty of the demand must be accounted for in an assembly line. In this book, methods dealing with random demand or random production sequence are presented, so that the practitioners can plan more robust and efficient production systems.

This strategy enables modeling real-world problems and has many practical applications. Key features: * Presents a rigorous exposition of the theoretical foundations of the concept of a path player game; * Suggests 18 practical open problems for future research in such areas as traffic planning, computation of equilibria, and optimization; * Examines potentials for games on polyhedra as well as integer versions of generalized Nash equilibria. Written clearly, with well-presented mathematics, this book is intended for graduate students, mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists.

Book excerpt: Supply chain management (SCM) strives for creating competitive advantage and value for customers by integrating business processes from end users through original suppliers. However, the question of how SCM influences the value of a firm is not fully answered. Various conceptual frameworks that explain the coherence of SCM and company value, comprehended as value-based SCM, are well accepted in scientific research, but quantitative approaches to value-based SCM are found rather seldom. The book contributes to this research gap by proposing quantitative models that allow for assessing influences of SCM on the value of a firm. Opposed to existing models that limit the observation to chosen facets of SCM or selected value drivers, this holistic approach is adequate to • reflect configurational and operational aspects of SCM, • cover all phases of the product life cycle, • financially compare value impacts of profitability-related and asset-related value drivers, and • assess influences of dynamics and uncertainties on company value.
