Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and Complete Universal History of the Holy Bible, Vol. 1 of 4: From the Creation of the World, to the Full Establishment of Christianity, by Our Blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and His Holy Evangelists, Apostles, Disciples, &C From this expression, some are of opinion, that fowls derive their origin from the water as well as the fishes; while others, with equal reason, suppose them to have been made out of the earth, agreeable to the following passage in Gen. Ii. 19. Out of the ground God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air. But these two texts are easily reconciled, when we consider, that neither denies what the other asserts. It is to be observed, that some fowls live mostly in the water, others partly on land, andpartly on water, while a third sort live altogether on land. This diversity countenances the opinion of many of the ancients, that they were made partly out of the water, or of both mixed together. Book excerpt: The idea of the Bible as "Holy Scripture," a non-negotiable authority straight from God, has prevailed in Western society for some time. And while it provides a firm foundation for centuries of Christian teaching, it denies the depth, variety, and richness of the text. Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. He argues that it must be read in its historical context-- from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. -- adapted from jacket

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History of the Holy Bible, Vol. 1 of 3: As Contained in the Old and New Testaments, Including Also the Occurrences of Four Hundred Years, From the Last of the Prophets to the Birth of Christ, and the Life of Our Blessed Saviour and His Apostles, &C., With Copious Notes, Critical and Explanatory The elstorr of the bible, 'by the Rev. Mr. Howe], being much esteemed, and having become very scarce, I was de sired by thepublishers of this edition to prepare it for the press in doing which I found much more labour than I expected; for: Mr. Howel's style was frequently negligent, and required some imp/ovement to render it agreeable to modern and intelligent readers. Many events, recorded both in the Old and New Tes tament, appeared to me to have been passed over too'slightly. To his account of these I have made considerable additions and have sometimes ventured (to intermingle a few practical reflections. I have also endeavoured to throw that light upon some of the' ob scurer passages'of the Old Testament with which we are fur nished by the New. The History of our Saviour's sufirings, death, and resurrection, is much enlarged, for which I am in debted chiefly to those excellent writers, Doctors Doddridge and Macknight; from whom, as well as from several oth er able critics, I have borrowed many an explanatory note, which I trust have contributed greatly to enrich the Work: and throughout the whole, I have laboured to render the history uniformly evangelical. In a worth - If Mr. Howell's original warh deserved the approbation of the public, I hope this improved edition will be still more accepta. Ble, and be found generally useful to Christians of all denomina tions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
