Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from York County and the World War: Being a War History of York and York County The war time history of our community was not made solely by the bravery, the sacrifices and the victories of its soldiers, sailors, and marines. The activities of all the rest of its patriotic citizens, men, women, and children, played a vital part, whether their achievements were the result of individual effort, or of the co-ordinated work of such organizations as the American Red Cross, the War Camp Community Service, the Food Administration and others too numerous to mention, which supported every obstacle caused by the national emergency with a zeal and an unselfish devotion that make history for this old County of ours. In recording this history, it has been the honest aim of the editors to produce accurate and complete records. The undertaking has been so immerse, however, that it is inevitable that some mistakes and omissions have been made, due to such obstacles as the failure of the relatives of some of the boys who lost their lives to send in photographs to complete the honor roll. In the compilation of the necessary data, the editors have received much valuable assistance. Especially should recognition here be given to Mr. Grier Hersh for his kind help and encouragement. Further, without the splendid co-operation of the relatives of the boys who made the supreme sacrifice, the completion of this work would not have been possible. It is earnestly hoped that there is given, in these pages, a general, correct and vivid picture of the wonderful and glorious sacrifices of the York County people. If in addition, this history brings us to a realization of the sacrifices of our friends, especially those that gave their all, then the aim of this work may be said to have been accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History: County of York Hitherto every thing seemed to promise prosperity to the ministers and tran quillity to the people, but factions at court quickly threw all into confusion. The queen soon perceived the weakness of her consort, and ruled him with an absolute sway: by this means the marquis of Suffolk, the cardinal of Winchester, and the archbishop of York, saw their power more firmly established. A strict union was formed between the queen and these ministers, which proved fatal to the duke of Gloucester, whom the whole party regarded as a common enemy. That noble man had incurred the resentment of the queen by opposing her marriage, and as he was hitherto the presumptive heir to the crown, the ministers might dread being called to a rigorous account if ever it were placed on his head. His destruction was therefore determined, and but too successfully effected. In order to'get him into their power, they contrived to have him accused of a conspiracy for the purpose of murdering the king and seizing on the crown. On this charge he was arrested and thrown into prison, but neither time nor opportunity was allowed him for proving his innocence. Soon after his commitment he was found dead in his bed no marks of violence appeared 'on his body, but it was universally believed that he had fallen a victim to the malice of his enemiesgl. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of York County The topographical features of York County consist prin cipally of easy-rolling hill and valley surface m a great variety Of aspects. The county belongs to the open country of the great Atlantic plain with an average elevation of about 500 feet above high tide at Philadelphia. A ridge of the South Mountains, about feet high, enters the northwestern cor ner of the county and terminates above Dillsburg. A spur of these'mountains extends across Fairview township and down along the Susquehanna. Enclosed within the different smaller ridges are the fertile Redlands and Fishing Creek Valleys, composed of the new red sandstone and red shale for-mations. Round Top, feet above sea level, and its quiet neighbor, Knell's Hill, are isolated peaks of basalt or trap formation in Warrington and Monoghan Townships. The Conewago Hills, isolated ridges of South Mountain, cross the county to ward York Haven. Above Wrightsville, as far as to the mouth of the Codorus Creek, extending westward toward the Harrisburg pike, is a wooded ridge of white sandstone, known as Hellam Hills. Between this and Conewago Hills there is a wide extent of red sandstone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Westchester County, New York: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Year 1900 Long before the work now given to the public was conceived as a practical project, the present editor realized the force of these consid orations and cherished not only a hope that a genuine narrative his tory of the county might some day be produced, but an ambition to become personally instrumental in achieving so important a result. His attention was especially directed to the matter by his observa tions during his connection with the schools, from which he became convince-d of the extremely elementary character of the general knowledge of this county's history, even in relation to the Revolution, whereof, indeed, anything like a well co-ordinated understanding is most exceptional among the people, and quite incapable of being taught to the young because of the unsuitability for that purpose of all books heretofore published that bear on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Alfred, York County, Maine The following centennial history of Alfred was written by l)r. Usiier Parsons, a native of the town, who took pains, many years since, to collect accurate data. The publishers have thought it proper to insert the following notice of the author: - Usher Parsons, M.D., youngest son of William and Abigail Frost (Blunt) Parsons, was born in Alfred, August 18th, 1788. His boyhood was mostly spent in that town, where he worked on his father's farm, and attended the village school. He went to Berwick Academy about a year. He began the study of medicine with Dr. Abiel Hall, of Alfred, in May, 1807. He attended anatomical lectures at Fryeburg, by Dr. Alexander Ramsey. In the autumn of 1809, being disappointed in receiving funds to attend a second course by Dr. Ramsey in Portland, he walked about fifteen miles in the night nearly to Saco, slept a few hours on some hay in a barn, and reached Kennebunk the following noon, and Alfred in the evening. During the moonlight walk he meditated on the past and future course of his life. Though in his twenty-first year, with but limited education, he resolved that he would put forth all his energies for ten years to obtain the degrees of A.M. and M.D., and to become a teacher of anatomy. That resolution was the seed-pur-pose of his life. He studied the ancient languages under Rev. Moses Sweat, and at intervals taught school. In 1811 he went to Boston, became a pupil of Dr. John Warren, and was licensed to practice in February, 1812. He began practice in Dover, N. II. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of York County, Maine: With Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Its Prominent Men and Pioneers James Rosier, an English gentleman, who accompanied Capt. Weymouth as chroniolcr, wrote a Mug account of the newly-discovered country in 1605, but omitted all names and observations of latitude and longitude. In order, it is said, to prevent navigators of other nations from seeking theaamespot. The consequence has been that the river has been gossed to bethe Hudaon, thedamcs, th08sco, and, more recently, the l'enobacot, the Kenncbee, and the arm of the sea north of Monhegan, running up to South Thomaston, and known as the St. George's. Capt. C mouth also discovered the fishing-hanks, which are still known as the George's banks; and although his name has fiiled to displace the old Indian name of Monhegsn, there has been a strong presumption that the nameless river which he found might still wur, like the banks, the name of his patron saint. Dr. Belknap, the historian of New Hampshire, however, conjectured that cmoutb had ascended the Penobscot River, and this opinion was gener ally followed until the late John mckceu, of Brunswick, suggested that Bosier's description better fitted the Kenne beo, and a few years later Kev. David Cushman, of Warren, contended that the St. George's River was intended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Still there are certain duties which the Present owes to the Future, to transmit in a permanent form the record of the Past, that the memory of the Olden time, and the names of those who have aided in the formation Of so ciety fall not into oblivion; and although our annals may be quite void Of those dramatic events which have too often filled the historic page, it is believed the quiet origin and growth of our community, have presented facts that will interest the present, and instruct a future age.
