Book excerpt: The increasing urgency to extract additional efficiency from hybrid propulsion systems has led to the development of advanced power management control algorithms. For this research, we address the problem of online optimization of the supervisory power management control in parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). We model HEV operation as a controlled Markov chain and show that the control policy yielding the Pareto optimal solution minimizes online the long-run expected average cost per unit time criterion. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is validated through simulation and compared with the solution derived with dynamic programming using the average cost criterion. Finally, both solutions achieved the same cumulative fuel consumption demonstrating that the online Pareto control policy is an optimal control policy.

In this paper, we address the problem of optimizing online the supervisory control in a series hybrid configuration by modeling its operation as a controlled Markov chain using the average cost criterion. We treat the stochastic optimal control problem as a dual constrained optimization problem. We show that the control policy that yields higher probability distribution to the states with low cost and lower probability distribution to the states with high cost is an optimal control policy, defined as an equilibrium control policy. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the efficiency of the proposed controller in a series hybrid configuration and compare it with a thermostat-type controller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles new methods showing the automotive engineer for the first time how hybrid vehicle configurations can be modeled as systems with discrete and continuous controls. These hybrid systems describe naturally and compactly the networks of embedded systems which use elements such as integrators, hysteresis, state-machines and logical rules to describe the evolution of continuous and discrete dynamics and arise inevitably when modeling hybrid electric vehicles. They can throw light on systems which may otherwise be too complex or recondite. Hybrid Systems, Optimal Control and Hybrid Vehicles shows the reader how to formulate and solve control problems which satisfy multiple objectives which may be arbitrary and complex with contradictory influences on fuel consumption, emissions and drivability. The text introduces industrial engineers, postgraduates and researchers to the theory of hybrid optimal control problems. A series of novel algorithmic developments provides tools for solving engineering problems of growing complexity in the field of hybrid vehicles. Important topics of real relevance rarely found in text books and research publications—switching costs, sensitivity of discrete decisions and there impact on fuel savings, etc.—are discussed and supported with practical applications. These demonstrate the contribution of optimal hybrid control in predictive energy management, advanced powertrain calibration, and the optimization of vehicle configuration with respect to fuel economy, lowest emissions and smoothest drivability. Numerical issues such as computing resources, simplifications and stability are treated to enable readers to assess such complex systems. To help industrial engineers and managers with project decision-making, solutions for many important problems in hybrid vehicle control are provided in terms of requirements, benefits and risks.

The background, environmental motivation and control challenges associated with hybrid vehicles are introduced. The text includes mathematical models for all relevant components in the hybrid power train. The power split problem in hybrid power trains is formally described and several numerical solutions detailed, including dynamic programming and a novel solution for state-constrained optimal control problems based on the maximum principle. Real-time-implementable strategies that can approximate the optimal solution closely are dealt with in depth. Several approaches are discussed and compared, including a state-of-the-art strategy which is adaptive for vehicle conditions like velocity and mass. Three case studies are included in the book: • a control strategy for a micro-hybrid power train; • experimental results obtained with a real-time strategy implemented in a hybrid electric truck; and • an analysis of the optimal component sizes for a hybrid power train. Optimal Control of Hybrid Vehicles will appeal to academic researchers and graduate students interested in hybrid vehicle control or in the applications of optimal control. Practitioners working in the design of control systems for the automotive industry will also find the ideas propounded in this book of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main goals of hybrid electric vehicle technology is to improve the energy efficiency. In industry and most of academic research, the powertrain control is designed and evaluated under standard driving cycles. However, the situations that a vehicle may encounter in the real world could be quite different from the standard cycles. Studies show that the human drivers have a great influence on the vehicle energy consumptions and emissions. The actual operating conditions that a vehicle faces are not only dependent on the roads and traffic, but also dependent on the drivers. A standard driving cycle can only represent the typical and averaged driving style under the typical driving scenarios, therefore the control strategies designed based on a standard driving cycle may not perform well for all different driving styles. This motivates the idea to design optimally-personalized hybrid electric vehicle control methods that can be adaptive to individual human driving styles and their driving routes. Human-subject experiments are conducted on a driving simulator to study the driving behaviors. A stochastic driver pedal model that can learn individual driver’s driving style is developed first. Then a theoretic investigation on worst-case relative cost optimal control problems, which is closely related to vehicle powertrain optimal control under real-world uncertain driving scenarios, is presented. A two-level control structure for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is proposed, where the parameters in the lower-level controller can be on-line adjusted via optimization using historical driving data. The methods to optimize these parameters are designed for fixed-route driving first, and then extended to multi-routes driving using the idea similar to the worst-case relative cost optimal control. The performances of the two proposed methods are shown through simulations using human driving data and stochastic driver model data respectively. The energy consumption results in both situations are close to the posteriori optimal result and outperform other existing methods, which show the effectiveness of applying optimally-personalized energy management strategy on hybrid electric vehicles. Finally, a route-based global energy-optimal speed planning method is also proposed. This off-line method provides a useful tool to evaluate the potential of other speed planning methods, for either eco-driving guidance applications or future automated vehicle controls. The contributions of this dissertation include 1) a novel stochastic driver pedal behavior model which can learn independent drivers’ driving styles is created, 2) a new worst-case relative cost optimal control method is proposed, 3) a real-time implementable stochastic optimal energy management strategy for hybrid electric vehicles running on fixed routes is designed using the statistics of history driving data, 4) the fix-route strategy is extended to the multi-route situation, and 5) an off-line global energy-optimal speed planning solution for road vehicles on a given route is presented.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief deals with the control and optimization problem in hybrid electric vehicles. Given that there are two (or more) energy sources (i.e., battery and fuel) in hybrid vehicles, it shows the reader how to implement an energy-management strategy that decides how much of the vehicle’s power is provided by each source instant by instant. Hybrid Electric Vehicles: •introduces methods for modeling energy flow in hybrid electric vehicles; •presents a standard mathematical formulation of the optimal control problem; •discusses different optimization and control strategies for energy management, integrating the most recent research results; and •carries out an overall comparison of the different control strategies presented. Chapter by chapter, a case study is thoroughly developed, providing illustrative numerical examples that show the basic principles applied to real-world situations. The brief is intended as a straightforward tool for learning quickly about state-of-the-art energy-management strategies. It is particularly well-suited to the needs of graduate students and engineers already familiar with the basics of hybrid vehicles but who wish to learn more about their control strategies.

Book excerpt: An increase in the awareness of environmental conservation is leading the automotive industry into the adaptation of alternatively fueled vehicles. Electric, Fuel-Cell as well as Hybrid-Electric vehicles focus on this research area with the aim to efficiently utilize vehicle powertrain as the first step. Energy and Power Management System control strategies play a vital role in improving the efficiency of any hybrid propulsion system. However, these control strategies are sensitive to the dynamics of the powertrain components used in the given system. A kinematic mathematical model for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has been developed in this study and is further optimized by determining optimal power management strategy for minimal fuel consumption as well as NOx emissions while executing a set drive cycle. A multi-objective optimization using weighted sum formulation is needed in order to observe the trade-off between the optimized objectives. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm has been used in this research, to determine the trade-off curve between fuel and NOx. In performing these optimizations, the control signal consisting of engine speed and reference battery SOC trajectory for a 2-hour cycle is used as the controllable decision parameter input directly from the optimizer. Each element of the control signal was split into 50 distinct points representing the full 2 hours, giving slightly less than 2.5 minutes per point, noting that the values used in the model are interpolated between the points for each time step. With the control signal consisting of 2 distinct signals, speed, and SOC trajectory, as 50 element time-variant signals, a multidimensional problem was formulated for the optimizer. Novel approaches to balance the optimizer exploration and convergence, as well as seeding techniques are suggested to solve the optimal control problem. The optimization of each involved individual runs at 5 different weight levels with the resulting cost populations being compiled together to visually represent with the help of Pareto front development. The obtained results of simulations and optimization are presented involving performances of individual components of the PHEV powertrain as well as the optimized PMS strategy to follow for a given drive cycle. Observations of the trade-off are discussed in the case of Multi-Objective Optimizations.

Book excerpt: "Deterministic and stochastic hybrid optimal control problems are studied for systems where autonomous and controlled state jumps are allowed at the switching instants and, in addition to running costs, switching between discrete states incurs costs. Features of special interest in this work are the possibility of state space dimension change, and existence of low dimensional switching manifolds. In other words, the hybrid state space is considered as the direct product of a set of discrete state components with finite cardinality and a set of Euclidean spaces whose dimensions depend upon the discrete state components; and Euclidean spaces contain switching manifolds which correspond to autonomous switchings and jumps, and which are allowed to be codimension k submanifolds of the corresponding Euclidean state spaces, where k is greater than or equals to one. Statements of the Hybrid Minimum Principle (HMP) and Hybrid Dynamic Programming (HDP) are presented and it is shown that under certain assumptions the adjoint process in the HMP and the gradient of the value function in HDP are identical to each other almost everywhere along optimal trajectories. Furthermore, results for stochastic hybrid optimal control problems are established which generalize those of the deterministic case. A key feature of the stochastic hybrid systems framework under consideration is the presence of the hard constraints imposed by switching manifolds on diffusion-driven state trajectories; these constraints influence the boundary conditions in the Stochastic Hybrid Minimum Principle (SHMP). In addition to analytic examples, an electric vehicle equipped with a dual-stage planetary transmission is modelled in this framework, where, due to the special structure of the transmission, the mechanical degree of freedom changes during the transition period. Hybrid control problems for energy and time optimality of an electric vehicle acceleration task are studied which reveal unanticipated aspects of optimal energy saving strategies for the transmission control. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the main problems in the real-time control of parallel hybrid electric powertrains in non-road applications that work in continuous high dynamic operation. It also provides practical insights into maximizing the energy efficiency and drivability of such powertrains. It introduces an energy-management control structure, which considers all the physical powertrain constraints and uses novel methodologies to predict the future load requirements to optimize the controller output in terms of the entire work cycle of a non-road vehicle. The load prediction includes a methodology for short-term loads as well as cycle detection methodology for an entire load cycle. In this way, the energy efficiency can be maximized, and fuel consumption and exhaust emissions simultaneously reduced. Readers gain deep insights into the topics that need to be considered in designing an energy and battery management system for non-road vehicles. It also becomes clear that only a combination of management systems can significantly increase the performance of a controller.
