Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since databases are the primary repositories of information for today's organizations and governments, database security has become critically important. Most database security models focus on protecting against external unauthorized users. Because multilevel secure databases provide internal security according to user access type, they are a viable option for the security needs of modern database systems. Covering key concepts in database security, this book illustrates the implementation of multilevel security for relational database models. It considers concurrency control in multilevel database security and presents encryption algorithms. It also includes simulation programs and Visual studio and Microsoft SQL Server code for the simulations covered in the text.

Book excerpt: Since databases are the primary repositories of information for today's organizations and governments, database security has become critically important. Introducing the concept of multilevel security in relational databases, this book provides a comparative study of the various models that support multilevel security policies in the relational database--illustrating the strengths and weaknesses of each model. Multilevel Security for Relational Databases covers multilevel database security concepts along with many other multilevel database security models and techniques. It presents a prototype that readers can implement as a tool for conducting performance evaluations to compare multilevel secure database models. The book supplies a complete view of an encryption-based multilevel security database model that integrates multilevel security for the relational database with a system that encrypts each record with an encryption key according to its security class level. This model will help you utilize an encryption system as a second security layer over the multilevel security layer for the database, reduce the multilevel database size, and improve the response time of data retrieval from the multilevel database. Considering instance-based multilevel database security, the book covers relational database access controls and examines concurrency control in multilevel database security systems. It includes database encryption algorithms, simulation programs, and Visual studio and Microsoft SQL Server code.

SEC2000 is the annual conference of TCll (Information Security) of the International Federation of Information Processing. The conference focuses on the seamless integration of information security services as an integral part of the Global Information Infrastructure in the new millenniUm. SEC2000 is sponsored by the China Computer Federation (CCF), IFIP/TCll, and Engineering Research Centre for Information Security Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ERCIST, CAS). There were 180 papers submitted for inclusion, 50 papers among them have been accepted as long papers and included in this proceeding, 81 papers have been accepted as short papers and published in another proceeding. All papers presented in this conference were reviewed blindly by a minimum of two international reviewers. The authors' affiliations of the 180 submissions and the accepted 131 papers range over 26 and 25 countries or regions, respectively. We would like to appreciate all who have submitted papers to IFIP/SEC2000, and the authors of accepted papers for their on-time preparation of camera-ready fmal versions. Without their contribution there would be no conference. We wish to express our gratitude to all program committee members and other reviewers for their hard work in reviewing the papers in a short time and for contributing to the conference in different ways. We would like to thank Rein Venter for his time and expertise in compiling the fmal version of the proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of databases within organizations have made it imperative to allow effective sharing of information from these disparate database systems. In addition, it is desirable that the individual systems must maintain a certain degree of autonomy over their data in order to continue to provide for their existing applications and to support controlled access to their information. Thus it becomes necessary to develop new techniques and build new functionality to interoperate these autonomous database systems and to integrate them into an overall information system. Research into interoperable database systems has advanced substantially over recent years in response to this need. The papers presented in this volume cover a wide spectrum of both theoretical and pragmatic issues related to the semantics of interoperable database systems. Topics covered include techniques to support the translation between database schema and between database languages; object oriented frameworks for supporting interoperability of heterogeneous databases, knowledge base integration and techniques for overcoming schematic discrepancies in interoperable databases. In addition, there are papers addressing issues of security transaction processing, data modelling and object identification in interoperable database systems. It is hoped the publication will represent a valuable collective contribution to research and development in the field for database researchers, implementors, designers, application builders and users alike.

Book excerpt: The volume "Fuzziness in Database Management Systems" is a highly informative, well-organized and up-to-date collection of contributions authored by many of the leading experts in its field. Among the contributors are the editors, Professors Patrick Bose and Janusz Kacprzyk, both of whom are known internationally. The book is like a movie with an all-star cast. The issue of fuzziness in database management systems has a long history. It begins in 1968 and 1971, when I spent my sabbatical leaves at the IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, as a visiting scholar. During these periods I was associated with Dr. E.F. Codd, the father of relational models of database systems, and came in contact with the developers ofiBMs System Rand SQL. These associations and contacts at a time when the methodology of relational models of data was in its formative stages, made me aware of the basic importance of such models and the desirability of extending them to fuzzy database systems and fuzzy query languages. This perception was reflected in my 1973 ffiM report which led to the paper on the concept of a linguistic variable and later to the paper on the meaning representation language PRUF (Possibilistic Relational Universal Fuzzy). More directly related to database issues during that period were the theses of my students V. Tahani, J. Yang, A. Bolour, M. Shen and R. Sheng, and many subsequent reports by both graduate and undergraduate students at Berkeley.

It details the design and implementation of a policy engine for provenance of data and presents case studies that illustrate solutions in a typical distributed health care system for hospitals. Although the case studies describe solutions in the health care domain, the methods presented in the book are applicable to a range of other domains.
