Book excerpt: In today's competitive environment, most companies tend to adopt a hybrid manufacturing strategy to provide more reliable services to a wide range of customers. Based on a real-world case study, we investigate a production-inventory-distribution system of a company in a complex supply chain. In such a system, the company manage production, inventory, and transportation decisions, where different products are produced at mills or stored at external warehouses are shipped to customers using multiple modes of transportation. At a tactical planning level, the company wants to know which production strategies, including make to stock (MTS), make to order (MTO) or vendor managed inventory (VMI) strategy, should be chosen for each customer and then how to coordinate the production, inventory, and distribution activities according to the strategy assigned to the customers. Moreover, the objective is not only to optimize its cost, but also satisfy the VMI customers on time and keep the target service level for MTO customers. The company can also control the purchase acceptance rate for MTS customers to better use the capacity. We develop a rolling horizon planning approach to deal with the dynamics of customers' demands under different forecasting scenarios. To check the validity and efficacy of the developed model, we perform numerical experiment under both static and rolling horizon based on adapted data from a real-world application from the pulp and paper industry in Canada. We also highlight some insights into the impact of various problem parameters on the tactical and operational decisions that can be considered for practical implementation.

The initial phase of this doctoral project involves a comprehensive literature review that focuses on examining the mechanisms and methodologies developed within the existing literature in the field of production-inventory management. The aim is to identify and analyze the strategies employed to coordinate production-inventory decisions and operations, ultimately enhancing the performance of the production-inventory system. Through this literature review, the articles were carefully evaluated to extract valuable insights regarding the specific problem domains addressed and the methodologies implemented. This systematic investigation serves as the fundamental groundwork for the subsequent steps, where decision-making models are developed based on the knowledge gained from the literature review. The second phase of this thesis involves the development of a mixed integer linear programming model, coupled with a rolling horizon planning approach. The objective is to determine appropriate production-inventory strategies, including make-to-stock (MTS), make-to-order (MTO), and vendor-managed-inventory (VMI), and subsequently coordinate production, inventory, and distribution operations to optimize system profitability. A real-case study from the Canadian pulp and paper industry is utilized, providing practical insights into the impact of different problem parameters on tactical and operational decision-making. These findings offer valuable considerations for practical implementation in similar industry settings. In the final stage of this thesis, a two-stage stochastic mixed integer nonlinear programming model is developed to address the coordination of sales price and selected production-inventory policies in meeting customers' demands, taking into account the uncertain and price-sensitive nature of demand. The first stage of the model involves making decisions pertaining to the selection of production-inventory strategies and pricing, with the objective of maximizing expected profit. The second stage encompasses decisions related to production, inventory, and distribution, which are utilized to evaluate the first-stage decisions across various scenarios with different levels of accuracy. Additionally, a simulated annealing-based algorithm is proposed to solve the model. Overall, the decision-making models and approaches presented in this doctoral project are innovative and applicable to multi-product production environments that serve diverse customers with different production-inventory strategies. These models offer practical solutions that can be implemented in real-world settings to improve operational efficiency and meet customer demands effectively.

In Chapter 2, we study Multilevel Rationing (MR) and Strict Priority (SP) stock allocation policies for a centralized single product multi-class M/G/1 make-to-stock queueing systems. To obtain the total cost of the system under these policies, we introduce a new method called "customer composition". Using this method, we focus on the proportion of customers of each class out of the total number of customers in the queue since the number of customers in M/G/1 queues is invariant for any non-idling and non-anticipating policy. We consider a series of two-priority M/G/1 queues with an exceptional service time in each busy period to characterize the customer composition. We derive closed form expressions for the costs of SP and MR policies using these results.In Chapter 3, we consider a two-echelon inventory system with a congested centralized production facility and several Distribution Centers (DCs). We assume that the production and transportation times are stochastic that are generally distributed, and customers arrive to each DC according to an independent Poisson process. Inventory at DCs is managed using the one-for-one replenishment policy. We use the customer composition approach to characterize the total inventory carrying and backlog costs of the system under the FCFS, SP and MR allocation policies at the warehouse. For the special case of exponentially distributed production and transportation times, we use the unit-flow method and derive closed form expressions for the optimal cost and base-stock level of the DCs. We numerically demonstrate that prioritization using either the SP or the MR policy could be very beneficial in comparison with the FCFS policy.In Chapter 4, we study a two-echelon supply chain with a set of suppliers, a set of retailers and a set of capacitated cross-docks which are to be established. The demand of the retailers could be satisfied from the suppliers through the cross-docks. The objective is to determine the number and location of cross-docks, the assignment of retailers to suppliers so that the total cost of pipeline and retailers' inventory, transportation, and facility location is minimized. We formulate the problem as a non-linear mixed integer programming and derive several structural results for special cases of the problem. To solve the general problem, we show that it can be written as a cutting stock problem and develop a column generation algorithm to solve it. We investigate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm numerically.
