REVISED EDITION, 1888 REPORT ON THE Epidemic of Yellow Fever ("La Maladie du Diable") IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, DURING THE MONTHS OF September, (r)ct&bev anif Ltsxtembev, .1876. BY DR. LOUIS A. FALLIGANT. Like the unharmed veterans of a desperate conflict, the survivors of a plague, such as that which visited our fair city, should first give thanks to Almighty God for their preservation through such a prolonged and fatal scourge, and then furnish the world the benefit of their experience, wherefrom to glean lessons of prudence by which to ameliorate future dangers and future sufferings. In this spirit I avail myself of the opportunity to place before my brethren of the medical schools such facts as I have accumulated from superabundant observations, and to arrange them with such analytic skill and amend them with such practical suggestions as have occurred to myself during their exhibition. The summer of 1876 found the city of Savannah in a condition widely different from that of many previous years, both in a hygienic and thermometrical sense. Some years since, a system of underground sewerage was projected and constructed through the most central and densely populated sections of the city, having its outlets at the surface on the eastern and western declivities of the hill on which the city is bnilt. The original purpose of this sewerage was to drain off the water from the streets and bath-rooms attached to private residences. The soil of the city is of a porous, sandy nature, readily absorbing fluids; and these sewers, intended, as I before stated, for surface drainage especially, were constructed at a depth above the natural percolative waterlevel of the adjacent and subjacent soil, so that much of the fluids passing along them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darius Hubert (1823‒1893), a French-born Jesuit, made his home in Louisiana in the 1840s and served churches and schools in Grand Coteau, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. In 1861, he pronounced a blessing at the Louisiana Secession Convention and became the first chaplain of any denomination appointed to Confederate service. Hubert served with the First Louisiana Infantry in Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia for the entirety of the war, afterward returning to New Orleans, where he continued his ministry among veterans as a trusted pastor and comrade. One of just three full-time Catholic chaplains in Lee’s army, only Hubert returned permanently to the South after surrender. In postwar New Orleans, he was unanimously elected chaplain of the veterans of the eastern campaign and became well-known for his eloquent public prayers at memorial events, funerals of prominent figures such as Jefferson Davis, and dedications of Confederate monuments. In this first-ever biography of Hubert, Katherine Bentley Jeffrey offers a far-reaching account of his extraordinary life. Born in revolutionary France, Hubert entered the Society of Jesus as a young man and left his homeland with fellow Jesuits to join the New Orleans mission. In antebellum Louisiana, he interacted with slaves and free people of color, felt the effects of anti-Catholic and anti-Jesuit propaganda, experienced disputes and dysfunction with the trustees of his Baton Rouge church, and survived a near-fatal encounter with Know-Nothing vigilantism. As a chaplain with the Army of Northern Virginia, Hubert witnessed harrowing battles and their equally traumatic aftermath in surgeons’ tents and hospitals. After the war, he was a spiritual director, friend, mentor, and intermediary in the fractious and politically divided Crescent City, where he both honored Confederate memory and promoted reconciliation and social harmony. Hubert’s complicated and tumultuous life is notable both for its connection to the most compelling events of the era and its illumination of the complex and unexpected ways religion intersected with politics, war, and war’s repercussions.

Book Synopsis Savannah's Midnight Hour by : Lisa L. Denmark
Download or read book Savannah's Midnight Hour written by Lisa L. Denmark and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Savannah’s Midnight Hour argues that Savannah’s development is best understood within the larger history of municipal finance, public policy, and judicial readjustment in an urbanizing nation. In providing such context, Lisa Denmark adds constructive complexity to the conventional Old South/New South dichotomous narrative, in which the politics of slavery, secession, Civil War, and Reconstruction dominate the analysis of economic development. Denmark shows us that Savannah’s fiscal experience in the antebellum and postbellum years, while exhibiting some distinctively southern characteristics, also echoes a larger national experience. Her broad account of municipal decision making about improvement investment throughout the nineteenth century offers a more nuanced look at the continuity and change of policies in this pivotal urban setting. Beginning in the 1820s and continuing into the 1870s, Savannah’s resourceful government leaders acted enthusiastically and aggressively to establish transportation links and to construct a modern infrastructure. Taking the long view of financial risk, the city/municipal government invested in an ever-widening array of projects—canals, railroads, harbor improvement, drainage— because of their potential to stimulate the city’s economy. Denmark examines how this ideology of over-optimistic risk-taking, rooted firmly in the antebellum period, persisted after the Civil War and eventually brought the city to the brink of bankruptcy. The struggle to strike the right balance between using public policy and public money to promote economic development while, at the same time, trying to maintain a sound fiscal footing is a question governments still struggle with today.
