Book excerpt: Francis was a six month old Ateles Geoffroyi spider monkey shipped to the U.S. in the 1960's from a South American rain forest and he was a challenge to be reckoned with as he grew and matured. He was head strong and wanted to be in charge of the the household and there were power plays daily between him, dad and/or the older boy. Francis had no problem with the younger son or mother because with them he felt in control, but not so with dad and the teenage son. Francis saw them as a threat and there were power plays between them daily. Meeting the demands of Francis were many because he had a photographic mind, learned from observation, was exceptionally intelligent, mentally sharp, cunning, mischievous, temperamental and when going through puberty he wanted to be in control of his environment, but dad and the teen son learned wuickly that it would not be in their best interest to let Francis have power over them. Francis respected dad's strength and size and walked around him, but would agitated the teen son who lifts weights to stay strong and fit because at times he would have to box Francis' jaws, and when that happened Francis would get back at him by hiding his school books, ripping the antenna off his car or peeing on him. Although the family loved Francis, by the time he was four years old they did the kindest thing they could for their pet, they returned him to his roots. They took him to an animal farm where he could mate with other spider monkeys and live out his life.

Book excerpt: Francis was a real live Ateles Geoffroyi spider monkey shipped to the U.S. in the 1960's from one of the South American rain forests. The baby primate was taken from his mother at about six months of age and sent to a pet shop in Los Angeles where he was purchased by a family with two boys and a pet dog. The monkey fell in love with the boys, fitted into the family and was named Francis. Raising Francis and meeting the challenges and demands of a spider monkey were many. He was intelligent, mischievous, cunning, and threw his share of tantrums when he couldn't get his way. Four years later when Francis matured and Lewis grew up, the family loved him and hated to give him up, but they did the kindest thing they could for him, Lewis found him a new home. With heavy hearts, Francis was taken to a local animal farm to live out his life with other spider monkeys.

Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world's leading scientists, working at the cutting edge of the study of DNA, the code of life. Yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God. How does he reconcile the seemingly unreconcilable? In THE LANGUAGE OF GOD he explains his own journey from atheism to faith, and then takes the reader on a stunning tour of modern science to show that physics, chemistry and biology -- indeed, reason itself -- are not incompatible with belief. His book is essential reading for anyone who wonders about the deepest questions of all: why are we here? How did we get here? And what does life mean?

Book excerpt: The Thiri Rama – or the Great Rama – was written for court performance and is the only known illustrated version of the Ramayana story in Myanmar. Based on palm-leaf manuscripts and scenes carved on over 300 sandstone plaques at a mid-nineteenth-century Buddhist pagoda west of Mandalay in Myanmar, this book presents an original translation of the Thiri Rama rendered in prose. The volume also includes essays on the history and tradition of the Ramayana in Myanmar as well as the cultural context in which the play was performed. It contains many helpful resources, incorporating a glossary and a list of characters and their corresponding personae in Valmiki’s Ramayana. With over 250 fascinating visuals and core text contributions by distinguished Burmese scholars, U Thaw Kaung, Tin Maung Kyi, and U Aung Thwin, this book will greatly interest scholars and researchers of South and Southeast Asian culture, literary forms, epics, art and art history, theatre and performance studies, religion, especially those concerned with Hinduism, as well as folklorists.

Anyone with romantic notions of Chinese culture will be unsettled by the jagged, unsentimental portrait of modern urban China."(Chicago Reader) Poetic and devastating, sensuous and politically acute, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig's China Plays explore the forces of global capital as they explode within the lives of everyday people in contemporary China. This volume collects together the three plays in the series, including Cowhig's exploration of the human cost of development in China's socialist market economy (The World of Extreme Happiness), of justice and revenge amidst ecological and economic catastrophe (Snow in Midsummer), and the tale of the trade in blood that brought the AIDS crisis to rural China (The King of Hell's Palace). In addition to Cowhig's plays, the volume includes a host of supplemental materials including an editorial preface and three (previously published) brief essays responding to each play by the editor, Joshua Chambers-Letson; a new introduction by theatre/performance scholar and dramaturg Christine Mok that explores the key themes in Cowhig's body of work; a summary discussion between Cowhig, Chambers-Letson, and Mok, on Cowhig's process and the political and aesthetic currents animating her work. The World of Extreme Happiness: "Fearless, zippily-paced, and satirical . . . Cowhig forces us down the long hard look path" (Independent) Snow in Midsummer: “Gripping and affecting... graceful and impassioned” (Times) The King of Hell's Palace: "A medical-scandal drama that we can't afford to ignore" (Telegraph)
