Book excerpt: The Picatinny Arsenal explosion temperature test was modified to study the effect produced on the induction period by vapors in contact with the surface of explosives. The test was found to be reproducible and significantly responsive to changes in times to explosion and activation energy of RDX, PbN6, and RDX/PbN6 mixture exposed to H2O and Freon vapors. These changes are postulated to be a function of vapor-surface interactions which correspondingly alter the rate of surface heat dissipation and mechanism of chemical reactions which initiate explosive decomposition. Book excerpt: Run-down impact sensitivity tests were conducted on FP-790 (30/20/50 Ca/Al/KClO4), containing either elemental or CaCO3-coated Ca and 60/40 KClO4/Al. The effects of fuel particle size, aging of the composition after blending, exposure of the composition to 75% RH over various time intervals, and composition temperature were investigated. Flash compositions containing Ca as fuel were more impact sensitive than those containing atomized Al. The systems containing Ca also exhibited the most marked increase in impact sensitivity on heating to 110 C. No trend in impact sensitivity was apparent due to fuel particle size. Aging of the compositions in sealed containers for 1 mo resulted in a very slight increase in impact sensitivity, while exposure to 75% RH caused a marked decrease in impact sensitivity. The substitution of Ca-Al alloy for the individual fuel ingredients in FP 790 resulted in a slight increase in impact sensitivity.

It is a one-dimensional test carried out under relatively unconfined conditions that are similar to those encountered in melt casting operations. The test allows the researcher to assess the response of the explosive to a controlled thermal stimulus under laboratory-like conditions and, more importantly, to determine its critical temperature. The latter is defined as the lowest constant surface temperature at which a material of a specific size, shape and composition can self-heat catastrophically. This test allows one to validate kinetic and thermal parameters determined by standard small-scale laboratory experiments. These parameters are necessary to predict the critical temperatures associated with large scale melt cast operations. The experimental critical temperature of the explosive used in this report to demonstrate the use of the One-Liter test falls in the temperature range 152-155 deg C. Critical temperatures for large-scale melt casting operations up to 100 gallons are predicted.

Book excerpt: The thermal sensitivity test, was applied to a number of energetic solids and liquids, including some new and unusual compounds. The correlation between the temperature at which a solid organic explosive reacts in 250 microsec and the materials impact sensitivity was extended and supported by new experimental data. The thermal sensitivities of a number of energetic mixtures were determined and interpreted on the basis of the kinetics and heat output of the initiating decomposition reaction. A scale of thermal sensitivities for liquid explosives and propellants was established and considered on the basis of current understanding of the sensitivity of liquids. Although the thermal sensitivity results generally do not agree with the results of accepted sensitivity tests, it is recommended that thermal sensitivities be run on newly synthesized, energetic liquids. The meaning of the thermal sensitivity results in terms of Arrhenius parameters governing the initial stage of the explosive decomposition reaction is considered briefly.

In this test, at 89 C, 2-picryl-5-nitrotetrazole (PNT) has a half life 4-5 times longer than tetrazene. Both materials have adequate hydrolytic stability and replacement of tetrazene by PNT in stab and percussion sensitive mixes should enhance shelf life. Thermal decomposition of tetrazene is approximately exponential while PNT exhibits autocatalysis. (Author).
