Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] The core objective of this thesis is summarised by its title: “Understanding the World Wool Market: Trade, Productivity and Grower Incomes”. Thus, we wish to aid understanding of the economic mechanisms by which the world wool market operates. In doing so, we analyse two issues trade and productivity and their effect on, inter alia, grower incomes. To achieve the objective, we develop a novel analytical framework, or model. The model combines two long and rich modelling traditions: the partial-equilibrium commodity-specific approach and the computable-general-equilibrium approach. The result is a model that represents the world wool market in detail, tracking the production of greasy wool through five off-farm production stages ending in the production of wool garments. Capturing the multistage nature of the wool production system is a key pillar in this part of the model . . . The estimated welfare gain for China is 0.1% of real income; this is a significant welfare gain. For three losing regions Italy, Germany and Japan the results are robust and we can be highly confident that these regions are the largest losers from the complete removal of 2005 wool tariffs. In both wool tariff liberalisation scenarios, regions whose exports are skewed towards wool textiles and garments gain the most as it is these wool products that have the highest initial tariff rates. The overall finding of this work is that a sophisticated analytical framework is necessary for analysing productivity and trade issues in the world wool market. Only a model of this kind can appropriately handle the degree of complexity of interactions between members (domestic and foreign) of the multistage wool production system. Further, including the nonwool economy in the analytical framework allows us to capture the indirect effects of changes in the world wool market and also the effects on the nonwool economy itself.

The book goes on to explain the theory and practice of trading in the futures markets and the associated regulation, and looks at the players, both wool companies and other institutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wool market was extremely important to the English medieval economy and wool dominated the English export trade from the late thirteenth century to its decline in the late fifteenth century. Wool was at the forefront of the establishment of England as a European political and economic power and this 2007 volume was the first study of the medieval wool market in over 20 years. It investigates in detail the scale and scope of advance contracts for the sale of wool; the majority of these agreements were formed between English monasteries and Italian merchants, and the book focuses on the data contained within them. The pricing structures and market efficiency of the agreements are examined, employing practices from modern finance. A detailed case study of the impact of entering into such agreements on medieval English monasteries is also presented, using the example of Pipewell Abbey in Northamptonshire.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Wool Prospects: January 31, 1935 Trading in the Boston wool market has been fairly steady since the middle of December, but volume of sales has been less than was reported in November and early December. The rapid increase in mill consumption in the last quarter of 1984 made necessary considerable purchases of wool for cur rent requirements, but reports indicate that manufacturers are not yet dis posed to build up stocks. Price quotations on Wool at Boston have shown little change since the middle of October and changes are expected to be small during the remainder of the 1934 - 55 season (to April 1, Since the margin of domestic prices over foreign prices is now about equal to the tariff, domestic price changes in the next few months Will depend to some extent upon developments in foreign markets. Prices of wool advanced slightly in Southern Hemisphere markets in the first half of January, and, at the Opening of the new series at London on January 15, prices were generally equal to or slightly higher than the closing prices of the previous series on December 11. During the second half of the month slight declines were reported in some centers. Recent agreements effected by Germany with other countries have made it possible for German buyers to reenter the Wool market to some extent and this has resulted in improved demand at London and at Southern Hemisphere sales.
