Normative models of consumer search prior to purchase, and of consumer search through experience, are reviewed first. Models of consumer consideration set formation are also outlined. These models are generally based on consumers balancing the costs and benefits of search, which implies that search should be limited if it is costly. The extensive empirical literature on consumer search, which is reviewed next, does indicate that search is limited. The third major section of this review discusses the effect of search on market equilibrium, and market forces related to the supply of information. These include models of how advertising, retailing, and the Internet become organized to facilitate consumer search. The review concludes with a discussion of overall findings and suggestions for further research.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to integrate the notion of extra-role performance with the current understanding of the relationships among salesperson job attitudes (job satisfaction and organizational commitment), role perceptions (ambiguity and conflict), in- and extra-role behavior, and turnover. The authors develop and test a theoretical model that specifies the relationships between in- and extra-role performance and salesperson job satisfaction, organizational commitment, role perceptions, and turnover using cross-sectional data from a large sample (N = 672) of commission sales personnel. The results generally indicate that performance and job attitudes mediate the relationships between role perceptions and turnover. However, the most notable aspect of the findings is that they are consistent with the hypothesis that in- and extra-role performance are intertwined, with in-role performance serving as an antecedent ot job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and extra-role performance as a consequence of these two variables. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for sales research.

Book excerpt: Organizations that employ salespeople as part of their marketing operations spend a great deal of resources recruiting, training, and retaining talented sales professionals. Yet retaining talented salespeople is still a challenge for most firms. Therefore, this study utilizes concepts from the cutting edge turnover literature to gain insight into why salespeople may choose to stay or leave their current employing organization. Recent advances in turnover research have focused on the role of job embeddedness as a driver of turnover. While the concept of job embeddedness has been used extensively, there is reason to believe that it is lacking in scope when being applied to sales, given the boundary spanning nature of the sales profession. Thus, an additional dimension of job embeddedness is proposed: customer embeddedness. When combined with the existing construct of job embeddedness, the resulting construct is called salesperson job embeddedness. Social exchange theory is used as rationale for customer embeddedness. Additionally, an empirical study is conducted to test the predictive validity of salesperson job embeddedness as a driver of turnover intentions in the sales context. Person-job fit, sales performance, and felt stress are tested as moderators of the relationship between salesperson job embeddedness and turnover intentions. The study results suggest that customer embeddedness adds to the variance explained of turnover intentions above that of job embeddedness alone, while controlling for job satisfaction and organizational commitment. No moderating effects of felt stress, sales performance, or person-job fit with salesperson job embeddedness on turnover intentions were found. An alternative post-hoc model was also tested. Felt stress was found to be a negative driver of job satisfaction and organizational commitment, salesperson job embeddedness was found to be a negative driver of sales performance, and person-job fit was a positive driver of both sales performance and job satisfaction. The results suggest that the new customer embeddedness dimension, along with the existing dimensions of job embeddedness is applicable to the sales research profession. There is also evidence to suggest that salesperson job embeddedness has a negative impact on salesperson performance. This has strong implications for both sales turnover research and practice.

This includes the tenure period holds by the salesperson within the organization. Tenure has become one of the main concerns due to the reason that the cost of acquiring and recruiting a new salesperson is high. Moreover, if the turnover rate is high, it would also bring negative impacts toward the organization's competitiveness and productivity. The purpose of this study is to explore the various factors that influence the sales career tenureship among insurance salesperson. For that reason, data were collected from 204 insurance salesperson using self-administered questionnaires throughout Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley areas. SPSS and AMOS were used for the purpose of data analysis. First, the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed in order to extract the factor underlying for each of the measured variable of interest. Then, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed based on the new factors extracted from EFA. Based on the result obtained from the CFA, Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was then drawn to examine the developed hypothesis as well as to test the fitness of the proposed model. Findings revealed that, there is indeed significant positive impact of intrinsic motivation on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and employee's productivity. Similarly, it was also found that, intrinsic motivation, job satisfaction and organizational commitment have a very significant positive impact on tenure. Besides, job satisfaction also shows significant positive impact on organizational commitment. In sum, the finding of the research can bring some weight towards the managerial implication, especially in the area of human resource management.

Book excerpt: Job-hopping, defined as the trajectory of voluntary inter-organizational transitions over one's career, is a top concern for managers as they witness their salespeople change jobs more frequently and with greater ease than ever before. Indeed, many hiring managers indicate that a history of job-hopping is a deal-breaker when interviewing candidates for employment. This is partially because the direct costs associated with replacing salespeople can be more than 200% of annual compensation. Surprisingly, marketing research has mostly neglected the phenomenon of salesperson job-hopping, opting instead to focus primarily on salesperson turnover. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation is to take an initial venture into the exciting and timely area of salesperson job-hopping. To accomplish this task, this dissertation draws from employee turnover and change theories to examine how salesperson job-hopping is influenced by job satisfaction change, defined as the systematic increase or decrease in levels of job satisfaction over time. Next, moderating variables representing salesperson human capital are examined as potential levers that impact the job satisfaction change 0́3 job-hopping relationship. A longitudinal dataset comprising data collected over 26 occasions and spanning 35 years of work history for 5,711 salespeople is utilized in the analysis. The hypothesized relationships are tested by estimating several longitudinal growth models. Results of the analysis indicate support for all predicted relationships. A discussion of the results is provided, followed by a discussion of this study's implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research.
