Book excerpt: In this paper, we report on an experimental application of Kullback-Leibler cross-entropy minimization to estimate trade flows between regions. Interregional trade flows were estimated for 31 categories of goods and services, between three regions of the Province of Quebec in 1992: the Montreal and Quebec metropolitain areas, and the Rest-of-Quebec. With this bayesian-style method, we were able to obtain interregional flows that respect the marginal totals taken from pre-existing regional social accounting matrices, using transportation flow data as a priori distributions.

Given that there is no readily available dataset covering all 267 NUTS2 regions of the EU, we developed a methodology to regionalise the trade flows using freight data. Our approach follows the parameter free estimation of Simini et al. (2012). Data on trade in goods and services have been derived from freight transport data. The trade flows were estimated by distributing the trade over the regions, given the amount produced and consumed in every region.

Book excerpt: There are tremendous disparities in economic development across regions in large developing countries such as Brazil, China, India, and Indonesia. Globalization may have different impacts on urban and coastal areas compared with less developed rural and inland regions. A major obstacle in conducting policy analysis for regional economic development under globalization is the lack of consistent, reliable regional data, especially data on interregional trade and interindustry transactions. This study implements and tests a mathematical programing model to estimate interregional, interindustry transaction flows in a national system of economic regions based on an interregional accounting framework and initial information on interregional shipments. A complete national input-output table plus regional sectoral data on gross output, value-added, exports, imports, and final demand are used as inputs to generate an interregional input-output system that reconciles regional market data and interregional transactions. The model is tested on a four-region 10-sector example against data aggregated from a multi-regional global input-output database, and test results from seven experiments are evaluated against eight mean absolute percentage error indexes. The model has capacity to discover the true interregional trade pattern from highly distorted initial estimates. The paper also discusses some general guidelines for implementing the model for a large-dimension multi-regional account based on real national and regional data. This paper is a product of the Trade Team, Development Research Group.

Book excerpt: We develop a simple model of international trade with heterogeneous firms that is consistent with a number of stylized features of the data. In particular, the model predicts positive as well as zero trade flows across pairs of countries, and it allows the number of exporting firms to vary across destination countries. As a result, the impact of trade frictions on trade flows can be decomposed into the intensive and extensive margins, where the former refers to the trade volume per exporter and the latter refers to the number of exporters. This model yields a generalized gravity equation that accounts for the self-selection of firms into export markets and their impact on trade volumes. We then develop a two-stage estimation procedure that uses a selection equation into trade partners in the first stage and a trade flow equation in the second. We implement this procedure parametrically, semi-parametrically, and non-parametrically, showing that in all three cases the estimated effects of trade frictions are similar. Importantly, our method provides estimates of the intensive and extensive margins of trade. We show that traditional estimates are biased, and that most of the bias is not due to selection but rather due to the omission of the extensive margin. Moreover, the effect of the number of exporting firms varies across country pairs according to their characteristics. This variation is large, and particularly so for trade between developed and less developed countries and between pairs of less developed countries.

Book excerpt: I present a new stylized fact from a large sample of countries for the period 2000-2006: bilateral foreign direct investment (FDI) flows are almost never observed in the absence of bilateral trade flows. I document a similar pattern using bilateral foreign affiliate sales (FAS), aggregating them up from a large firm level dataset (ORBIS), which includes over 45,000 firms. I propose a model where heterogeneous firms can decide whether to serve foreign markets through export or FDI. I derive theory-based gravity-type equations for the aggregate bilateral trade and foreign affiliate sales (FAS) flows. I then suggest a two-stage estimation procedure structurally derived from the model. In the first stage, an ordered Probit model is used to retrieve consistent estimates of the terms needed to correct the flows equations for firms' heterogeneity and selection into exports and FDI. In the second stage, a maximum likelihood estimator is applied to the corrected trade and FAS equations. The main results of the analysis are as follows: 1) The impact of distance, border and regional trade agreements on the amount bilateral foreign affiliate sales becomes substantially smaller after controlling for selection and firms' heterogeneity (hence separating the impact on the extensive versus the intensive margin). 2) The same “attenuation” result is found also for the trade equations, consistently with previous literature. 3) When FAS are observed, failing to take this into account when correcting for heterogeneity and selection in the trade equations does not leads to significant differences in the estimated coefficients.

Book excerpt: Regional input-output tables and trade flows: an integrated and interregional non-survey approach. Regional Studies. Regional analyses require detailed and accurate information about dynamics happening within and between regional economies. However, regional input-output tables and trade flows are rarely observed and they must be estimated using up-to-date information. Common estimation approaches vary widely but consider tables and flows independently. Here, by using commonly used economic assumptions and available economic information, this paper presents a method that integrates the estimation of regional input-output tables and trade flows across regions. Examples of the method implementation are presented and compared with other approaches, suggesting that the integrated approach provides advantages in terms of estimation accuracy and analytical capabilities.

Book excerpt: The present paper studies the modelling of inter-regional trade flows in the newly developed general equilibrium model of European Commission, Rhomolo. In contrast to international trade, usually, trade of goods and services between regions is not recorded statistically. As a result, no statistical data exists for inter-regional trade, which could be readily used for modelling purposes. We propose an augmented entropy approach, which combines the Transtools model's inter-regional trade and inter-regional transport cost data with data from regional and national statistics to obtain a full set of balanced bilateral trade data for all inter-regional transactions.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear estimation of the gravity model with Poisson/negative binomial methods has become popular to model international trade flows, because it permits a better accounting for zero flows and extreme values in the distribution tail. Nevertheless, as trade flows are not independent from each other due to spatial autocorrelation, these methods may lead to biased parameter estimates. To overcome this problem, eigenvector spatial filtering variants of the Poisson/negative binomial specification have been proposed in the literature of gravity modelling of trade. However, no specific treatment has been developed for cases in which many zero flows are present. This paper contributes to the literature in two ways. First, by employing a stepwise selection criterion for spatial filters that is based on robust (sandwich) p-values and does not require likelihood-based indicators. In this respect, we develop an ad hoc backward stepwise function in R. Second, using this function, we select a reduced set of spatial filters that properly accounts for importer-side and exporter-side specific spatial effects, both at the count and the logit processes of zero-inflated methods. Applying this estimation strategy to a cross-section of bilateral trade flows between a set of worldwide countries for the year 2000, we find that our specification outperforms the benchmark models in terms of model fitting, both considering the AIC and in predicting zero (and small) flows.
