Book excerpt: Introduction to Flight Testing Introduction to Flight Testing Provides an introduction to the basic flight testing methods employed on general aviation aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles Introduction to Flight Testing provides a concise introduction to the basic flight testing methods employed on general aviation aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles for courses in aeronautical engineering. There is particular emphasis on the use of modern on-board instruments and inexpensive, off-the-shelf portable devices that make flight testing accessible to nearly any student. This text presents a clear articulation of standard methods for measuring aircraft performance characteristics. Topics covered include aircraft and instruments, digital data acquisition techniques, flight test planning, the standard atmosphere, uncertainty analysis, level flight performance, airspeed calibration, stall, climb and glide, take-off and landing, level turn, static and dynamic longitudinal stability, lateral-directional stability, and flight testing of unmanned aircraft systems. Unique to this book is a detailed discussion of digital data acquisition (DAQ) techniques, which are an integral part of modern flight test programs. This treatment includes discussion of the analog-to-digital conversion, sample rate, aliasing, and filtering. These critical details provide the flight test engineer with the insight needed to understand the capabilities and limitations of digital DAQ. Key features: Provides an introduction to the basic flight testing methods and instrumentation employed on general aviation aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles. Includes examples of flight testing on general aviation aircraft such as Cirrus, Diamond, and Cessna aircraft, along with unmanned aircraft vehicles. Suitable for courses on Aircraft Flight Test Engineering. Introduction to Flight Testing provides resources and guidance for practitioners in the rapidly-developing field of drone performance flight test and the general aviation flight test community.

Book excerpt: Pilots, aviation students, kitplane builders, aircraft fleet operators and aeronautical engineers can all determine how their propeller-driven airplanes will perform, under any conditions, by using the step-by-step bootstrap approach introduced in this book. A few routine flying manoeuvres (climbs, glides, a level speed run) will give the necessary nine numbers. High-school level calculations then give performance numbers with much greater detail and accuracy than many other methods - for the reader's individual aircraft.

Book excerpt: This report is a supplement to the article 'Integration of an Airborne Laboratory into the United States Air Force Academy Academic Curriculum' in USAFA-TR-83-2. It contains the test plans, flight test planning guides, and aircraft specifications handouts used during the applications phase of the Department of Aeronautics Airborne Laboratory. Sample calculations and plots from actual flight test data taken by cadets are also included. While at test plans, flight test planning guides, and aircraft specifications were designed to be used with the Beechcraft Sierra and Sundowner, the formats are sufficiently general so that they can be applied to any single-engine, general aviation aircraft. Commonly recognized flight test techniques are used for gathering data, and data reduction is accomplished using accepted procedures. (Author).

Book excerpt: This advisory circular (AC) sets forth suggestions and safety related recommendations to assist amateur and ultralight builders in developing individualized aircraft flight test plans. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the United States Ultralight Association (USUA) are concerned and committed to improving the safety record of amateur-built and ultralight aircraft. The FAA Administrator, T. Allen McArtor, and EAA President, Paul H. Poberezny, signed a Memorandum of Agreement on August 1, 1988, which addressed the need for educational and safety programs to assist amateur-builders in test flying their aircraft. In accordance with that agreement, this AC provides guidelines for flight testing amateur built aircraft. As part of the FAA's continuing efforts to improve the safety record of all types of general aviation aircraft, this AC has been revised to include flight testing recommendations for canard-type and ultralight aircraft. This AC's purpose is the following: (1) To make amateur-built/ultralight aircraft pilots aware that test flying an aircraft is a critical undertaking, which should be approached with thorough planning, skill, and common sense. (2) To provide recommendations and suggestions that can be combined with other sources on test flying (e.g., the aircraft plan/kit manufacturer's flight testing instructions, other flight testing data). This will assist the amateur/ultralight owner to develop a detailed flight test plan, tailored for their aircraft and resources. The flight test plan is the heart of all professional flight testing. The plan should account for every hour spent in the flight test phase and should be adhered to with the same respect for the unknown that all successful test pilots share. The time allotted for each phase of a personalized flight test plan may vary, and each phase may have more events or checks than suggested in this AC. The goals, however, should be the same. The two goals for an amateur builder/ ultralight owner should be as follows: (1) At the end of the aircraft's flight test phase, the aircraft will have been adequately tested and found airworthy and safe to operate within its established operational envelope. (2) Incorporation of the flight test operational and performance data into the aircraft's flight manual so the pilot can reference the data prior to each flight.

Book excerpt: This document is intended as a reference source on the topic of aircraft performance flight testing. Formulas are derived for equations of motion, altitude and airspeed. It covers the various performance maneuvers, including takeoff, landing, cruise, acceleration, climb, and turn. Specialized tests to calibrate air data systems and to dynamically determine aircraft lift and drag are discussed. Lift, drag, thrust, and fuel flow analysis methods are presented. Special topics include gravity models, aerial refueling, terrain following, and effects of temperature and wind. The text is primarily for conventional jet aircraft, however, many of the equations and methods are applicable to light civil aircraft.

This advisory circular (AC) provides suggestions and safety related recommendations primarily to assist amateur and ultralight builders in developing individualized aircraft flight-test plans. It also provides guidance for experimental light sport aircraft flight testing after modifications to the aircraft. It provides recommendations and suggestions you can combine with other sources on test flying, such as the aircraft plan/kit manufacturer's flight testing instructions and other flight testing data. This will help you develop a detailed flight-test plan, tailored for your aircraft and resources. This AC attempts to make you aware that test flying an aircraft is a critical undertaking, which you should approach with thorough planning, skill, and common sense. The flight-test plan is the heart of all professional flight testing. The plan should account for every hour spent in the flighttest phase and you should adhere to it with the same respect for the unknown that all successful test pilots share. The time allotted for each phase of a personalized flight-test plan may vary, and each phase may have more events or checks than suggested in this AC, but your goals, should be the same. You should add flight-test operational and performance data to the aircraft's flight manual so you can reference the data prior to each flight. This AC is not mandatory and does not constitute a regulation. This AC describes an acceptable means, but not the only means, to develop flight-test plans. However, if you use the means described in the AC, you must follow it in all important respects. This AC applies to amateur and ultralight builders, and individuals involved in flight testing those aircraft.
