Book excerpt: The mixing-layer height and the average wind speed within the mixing layer were calculated twice for each day of a 5-year record of upper air observations at 62 National Weather Service stations int he contiguous United States. The times of day of these calculations are morning and mid-afternoon. A rough allowance was made for effects of the urban "heat island" on the morning mixing heights. The morning and afternoon times coincide approximately with those of maximum and secondary minimum concentrations of slow-reacting pollutants in cities. These calculations illustrate the typical large diurnal variation in atmospheric dispersion. Twenty charts present seasonal and annual, and morning and afternoon mean mixing heights and wind speeds. A model of some general dispersion features over urban areas is described in which the normalized pollutant concentration averaged over a city is a function of mixing height, wind speed, and city size (distance the wind travels across the city). Frequency values of mixing height by wind speed are used with the model to calculate average normalized concentration frequencies for each weather station. Thirty charts present isopleth analyses of seasonal and annual, and morning and afternoon normalized pollutant concentrations that were exceeded 10, 25, and 50 percent of the time for specified city sizes. The occurrence of episodes during which upper limits on mixing height and wind speed were not exceeded were determined from the daily morning and afternoon values of these parameters. Isopleths of the total number of episode-days for episodes lasting at least 2 days and at least 5 days with various limiting mixing-height and wind-speed values are presented in 20 charts.

The significance of the impact of regional weather conditions on pollution levels has made meteorological modeling an indispensable tool in air quality studies. These modeling studies are subject to considerable uncertainties and a multitude of statistical techniques are widely utilized as complimentary tools. Scarcity of data and computational limitations limit the ability of simulation studies to consider all possible scenarios leading to poor air quality in a select region. The research presented here utilizes cluster analysis to study recurring meteorological conditions over a period of 12 years to identify the mechanisms of PM build up in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. The surface conditions identified are found to be strongly influenced by synoptic conditions prevailing over the study domain. The frequency of occurrence of favorable synoptic conditions on a regional scale may be influenced by large scale climatic events like El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). The scarcity of measurements of criteria pollutants, especially ozone and particulate matter (PM), prior to the last 10-15 year period, limits the scope of observing the influence of climate variability during recent decades on regional pollution levels. A novel statistical framework to utilize available measurements and characterize synoptic influences on regional PM pollution in California's Central Valley during 1998--2008 has been proposed. The identified target conditions were used to develop a classification scheme to scan historical climate datasets dating back to 1948. The procedure identifies exceedance conducive days during 1950-1998, when no PM[subscript 2.5] measurements were available. Temporal patterns in seasonal frequency of these identified exceedance conducive days is investigated for temporal patterns driven by ENSO and PDO. These events evolve over inter-annual and decadal timescales and may result in variability of seasonal/annual frequency of air pollution episodes. The developed scheme is then extended to study the trends in the frequency of occurrence of conducive conditions during summer for ozone and winter for PM[subscript 2.5] pollution at 8 non-attainment regions in the United States. The identified days are subsequently utilized in a generalized linear modeling (GLM) framework to identify the effects of ENSO and PDO on the occurrence of exceedance conducive days. The framework is used to characterize the influence of ENSO and PDO on summer ozone and winter PM[subscript 2.5] pollution at the selected 8 non-attainment regions.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Extreme air pollution meteorology, such as heat waves, temperature inversions, and atmospheric stagnation episodes, can significantly affect air quality. In this study, we analyze their long-term trends and the potential impacts on air quality. The significant increasing trends for the occurrences of extreme meteorological events in 1951-2010 are identified with the reanalysis data, especially over the continental regions. A statistical analysis combining air quality data and meteorological data indicates strong sensitivities of air quality, including both average air pollutant concentrations and high pollution episodes, to extreme meteorological events. Results also show significant seasonal and spatial variations in the sensitivity of air quality to extreme air pollution meteorology. Based on the sensitivity studies of air quality to air pollution meteorology, statistical models are constructed to predict the likelihood of extreme air pollution episodes with the status of extreme air pollution meteorology in two consecutive days. Our statistical models present reasonable estimation of air pollution days validated with observations. Our method is more computational efficiency and user-friendly than the complicated atmospheric chemistry models. It could be a useful tool for air quality forecast, in particular for projecting the risk of extreme air pollution episodes. Extreme meteorological events related to precipitation, such as drought or heavy precipitation, are also important for air quality. To get a better understanding of the relationship between precipitation features and air quality, we examine the sensitivities of air pollutants to the changes of various precipitation characteristics in the context of climate change. Perturbation studies are tested with GEOS-Chem model to isolate the roles of precipitation frequency, precipitation intensity, and total precipitation amount in the lifetime of black carbon (BC). We find that the atmospheric lifetimes of BC are more sensitive to precipitation frequency than precipitation intensity. The relationship between the lifetime of aerosols and the change of precipitation characteristics offer a simple tool to examine the effects of long-term changes of precipitation characteristics on atmospheric aerosols in various regions.

Book excerpt: Mountain Geography is a comprehensive resource that gives readers an in-depth understanding of the geographical processes that occur in the world's mountains and the impact of these regions on culture and society. The volume begins with an introduction that defines mountains, followed by a comprehensive treatment of their physical geography, including origins, climatology, snow and ice, landforms and geomorphic processes, soils, vegetation, and wildlife. The concluding chapters discuss the human geography of mountains and our attitudes toward them, populations in the mountain regions and their livelihoods and interactions within dynamic environments, the diversity of mountain agriculture, and the challenges of sustainable mountain development. -- Book Jacket.
