He was in his day one of the wealthiest merchants of Boston. He was the first bookseller and publisher in English America. He was one of the original founders of the Old South Church, was Representative to the General Court during 1671, 1672, 1673, was Constable in 1651, and one of the Selectmen of Boston for eighteen years, from 1659 to 1676. He joined the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1638, and was made Ensign in 1664. He was a member of the First Church in Cambridge in 1639.
