Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memorial of Joseph Henry On the death of Joseph Henry, who for the third of a century-had administered the operations of the Smithsonian Institution, as its first Secretary and executive officer, - with honor to himself and credit and distinction to the Institution, - the Board of Regents felt that in grateful appreciation of one whose services in the advancement of science, no less than in the promotion of the interests of the General Government, had been so conspicuous and so valuable, some formal and public memorial was pre-eminently fitting. Accordingly, at a meeting of the Regents held on the day following (he funeral, the Executive Committee of the Board (consisting of Dr. Parker, Dr. Maclean and General Sherman) were requested to make arrangements for a public commemoration in honor of the late Secretary, "of such a character and at such time as they may determine." In pursuance of this instruction, the said Committee, through the Hon. Hiester Clymer, a Regent, and a Member of the House of Representatives, presented the subject to the attention of Congress. In the House of Representatives. Monday, December 9, 1878. Mr. Clymer. (Member from Pennsylvania.) "I ask unanimous consent to submit for adoption at this time a concurrent resolution, to which I think there will be no objection." The concurrent resolution was read, as follows: "Resolved by the House of Representatives, {the Senate concurring, ) That the Congress of the United States will take part in the services to be observed on Thursday evening, January 16, 1879, in honor of the memory of Joseph Henry, late Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, under the auspices of the Regents thereof, and for that purpose the Senators and Representatives will assemble on that evening in the Hall of the House of Representatives, the Vice-President, supported by the Speaker of the House, to preside on that occasion. There being no objection, the resolution was adopted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Joseph Henry: A Sketch of His Scientific Work To cherish with affectionate regard the memory of the venerated dead is not more grateful to the feelings, than to recall their excel lences and to retrace the stages and occasions of their intellectual conquests is instructive to the reason. Few lives within the century are more worthy of admiration, more elevating in contemplation, or more entitled to commemoration, than that Of our late most honored and beloved president - joseph henry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joseph Henry and the Magnetic Telegraph: An Address Delivered at Princeton College, June 16, 1885 My Dear Sir: I take pleasure in furnishing to Princeton College my address presenting the memorial tablet of Professor Henry. I have added to it an appendix of notes supporting the statements contained in it, which I trust will prove satisfactory. It is a labor of love for me to do anything tending to present our great and beloved friend to his own age, and to posterity, in his true proportions. His achievements seemed to him so easy to perform, that he never looked upon them as exhibiting any great power; and he therefore involuntarily shrank from that praise to which he was so eminently entitled, and from conspicuously exhibiting his results before the world. He preferred to defer to the judgment of posterity, and to submit his reputation to the ordeal of time, which, like a simple acid, eats away the baser metal, and leaves the pure gold free from its association. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Memoriam, Major-General Joseph Hooker No memorial tablet can contain an appropriate record of the life, character, and services of Major-General Joseph Hooker. They deserve volume. Inscriptions suggest rather than narrate. This sketch must be something less than an inscription. Some men impress themselves on history through deeds accomplished; others, less fortunate, it may be, in their visible achievements, acquire renown by influence among their contemporaries and on posterity. History accepts the soldier to be great who, in campaigns and battles, was the victorious commander. Hooker was the leading spirit in battles where he did not command; he was the commander in campaigns history does not yet fully understand and will not accept as victorious. But Hooker Was A Great Soldier. The impress of his genius is stamped on the army in which he was reared and commissioned, and, through that army, on the country whose service was to him the highest duty. It is no detraction from the fame and honor justly due to his contemporaries to say that intrusion is not possible into the niche reserved for him. Living, he enjoyed the admiration of soldiers and of his countrymen; dead, his increasing renown fails to satisfy his surviving friends. Hooker's career, however, was not a complicated one. Like his nature, it was frank, open-hearted, and simple. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Joseph Sturge The writer of the following work is by no means convinced that it is an unmixed advantage for the memoirs of an individual to be published very speedily after his death, especially if he were one who had taken any prominent part in connection with public affairs. Still, for the sake of others who may think differently, he cannot but regret the delay that has occurred in the appearance of this volume. But there were many reasons why it was out of his power to accomplish his task sooner. He was so placed that he could only work at it by snatches, in the intervals of official duties always exigent, and sometimes very urgent, which it was impossible for him to pretermit. The work itself, also, proved a much more serious one than he anticipated, when he first acceded to the request with which the family of Joseph Sturge honoured him, to prepare some memorial of the life and labours of his revered and beloved friend. Mr. Sturge was a man whose sympathies were so broad, and whose activities were so varied, that to tell intelligibly the story of his life it was necessary to understand something of most of the leading public events of the last thirty or forty years.
