Jan. 17, Mr. Cristall seeing a minute in the book that the Society hailed his appearance, is not insensible to the circumstance, that while he has been doing nothing, the members have held on and kept, as it were, the ball up, so that he came in to catch the same without deserving it. Excursion to Eltham, calling to view Mr. Sheepshanks' collection by the way. In this year the death of Mr. R. T. Bone, from a hurt. Nov. 6, Stanfield came late. He was saved by his absence in the early part of the evening from the perils that beset the worthy member Uwins, who was sorely buffetted, let, hindered, and tempted by Sathanas in the likeness of a Frenchman. The president is happy to record, however, his final triumph over the devil, and if not over all his works, at least over his works in the character of a frame-maker. Jan. 2, 1841.--Stanfield's absence occasioned a great blank among the many "prizes" which fell to the lot of the president. The whole Society present on Midsummer Day. Excursion to Greenwich. The evening subject Rasselas and Imlah escaping from the Happy Valley. Leslie president. Constable came late, and introduced a moon into Alfred Chalon's drawing just where a moon had no business to be, thus indicating that the prince and princess were destined from their entrance into life to be deceived by false appearances. Thursday, Dec. 30th, 1841.--T. Uwins, president: Partridge stated that having been lately at Windsor, painting a whole length of the Queen, Her Majesty inquired about the Sketching Society, which had been brought under her notice by Mr. Lane, before her marriage with the Prince Albert. In the interest expressed on the subject the Prince united, but the painter did not...

Book Synopsis Joseph Severn, A Life by : Sue Brown
Download or read book Joseph Severn, A Life written by Sue Brown and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Joseph Severn (1793-1879), the best known but most controversial of Keats's friends, is based on a mass of newly discovered information, much of it still in private hands. Severn accompanied the dying Keats to Italy, nursed him in Rome and reported on his last weeks there in a famous series of moving letters. After Keats's death in relative obscurity, Severn pressed hard for an early biography and a more fitting memorial in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. In the nineteenth century Severn's friendship with Keats was seen as a model of devoted masculine companionship and he was reburied by popular acclaim next to Keats in 1882. In the twentieth century, by contrast, he was denigrated as an unreliable, self-promoting witness. Sue Brown's book fills a major gap in studies of Keats and his circle. It reassesses Severn's character, friendship with Keats, and influence on the posthumous development of the poet's fame and provides new information on Keats's death. The significance of Severn's artistic career has previously been downplayed. This book offers the first full assessment of his work and of his turbulent spell as British Consul in Rome from 1860 to 1871. Keats was not Severn's only famous friend. For most of his adult life Severn was at the heart of the large, lively British community in Rome welcoming amongst others Gladstone, who became his most important patron, Ruskin, Walter Scott, Wordsworth, Turner, Samuel Palmer, David Wilkie, and many more. He maintained long friendships with Leigh Hunt, Mary Shelley, Charles Eastlake, Richard Monckton Milnes, amongst others, and enjoyed a rich family life.

Book Synopsis Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England by : Basil Hunnisett
Download or read book Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England written by Basil Hunnisett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England is a detailed and comprehensive survey of the steel engravings that were so popular in the nineteenth century. With an extensive range of illustrations, the book refutes the assumption that steel engravings are of little artistic value or importance, a common attitude rooted largely in the connection between steel engravings and mass-produced books. Beginning with an exploration of the identification problems and early history of steel engravings, it moves through the production and printing of the plates and on to a study of several engravers and artists, as well as of the books themselves. Steel-Engraved Book Illustration in England will appeal to anyone interested in the history of printing and illustration.
