This study focuses on proposing a prediction model that could serve as a means for quantifying the impact of the main characteristics of earthquakes on the seismic risk of reinforced concrete moment frame structures. The seismic hazard due to sequential earthquakes is examined under mainshock-aftershock seismic sequences. A two-step maximum likelihood regression approach was adopted in order to propose a relationship that would link the seismic response of the studied buildings to the key characteristics of an earthquake. The accuracy of the proposed prediction equation was examined by comparing its outcomes with what was expected from physics-based models. Both the magnitude of an earthquake as well as the distance from the building's location to the rupture plane of the building were found to be among the parameters with the most notable impact on the buildings' seismic response.

Book excerpt: The ability to predict building responses subjected to an earthquake could be used to identify building damage which would largely reduce human inspection effort and operation downtime. This thesis explores various of machine learning methods to formulate prediction model for seismic building responses over the great Los Angeles region using three actual earthquake scenario data (1994 Northridge, USA, 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan and 2000 Tottori, Japan). The result shows that the geospatial interpolation method kriging outperforms other candidates among all earthquakes in both accuracy and model stability using criteria such as cross-validation and median absolute residual difference. Some inconsistency in accuracy levels between different earthquakes are caused by 1)earthquake characteristics and 2)representativeness of data samples of each event.

Extensive probabilistic techniques have been developed to address uncertainties from ground motions and building systems to reduce structural damage, economic loss and social impact of buildings subjected to seismic hazards where seismic structural responses are essential and often are retrieved through Nonlinear Response History Analysis. This process is largely limited by accuracy of model and computational effort. An alternative data-driven framework is proposed to reconstruct structure responses through machine learning techniques from limited available sources which may potentially benefit for "real-time" interpolating monitoring data to enable rapid damage assessment and reducing computational effort for regional seismic hazard assessment. It also provides statistical insight to understand uncertainties of seismic building responses from both structural and earthquake engineering perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on fundamental principles, Hydro-Environmental Analysis: Freshwater Environments presents in-depth information about freshwater environments and how they are influenced by regulation. It provides a holistic approach, exploring the factors that impact water quality and quantity, and the regulations, policy and management methods that are necessary to maintain this vital resource. It offers a historical viewpoint as well as an overview and foundation of the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics affecting the management of freshwater environments. The book concentrates on broad and general concepts, providing an interdisciplinary foundation. The author covers the methods of measurement and classification; chemical, physical, and biological characteristics; indicators of ecological health; and management and restoration. He also considers common indicators of environmental health; characteristics and operations of regulatory control structures; applicable laws and regulations; and restoration methods. The text delves into rivers and streams in the first half and lakes and reservoirs in the second half. Each section centers on the characteristics of those systems and methods of classification, and then moves on to discuss the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of each. In the section on lakes and reservoirs, it examines the characteristics and operations of regulatory structures, and presents the methods commonly used to assess the environmental health or integrity of these water bodies. It also introduces considerations for restoration, and presents two unique aquatic environments: wetlands and reservoir tailwaters. Written from an engineering perspective, the book is an ideal introduction to the aquatic and limnological sciences for students of environmental science, as well as students of environmental engineering. It also serves as a reference for engineers and scientists involved in the management, regulation, or restoration of freshwater environments.

Book excerpt: Seismic Evaluation, Damage, and Mitigation in Structures covers recent developments in the field of seismic performance assessment of structures. Earthquakes are one of the main natural hazards that can directly cause damage to a structure or even instigate a structural collapse, resulting in significant economic and human loss of life. In the event of an earthquake where many buildings and infrastructure components are not able to function afterward, or if extensive repair and associated disruption are needed, it can be extremely costly and take a long time to resolve. Divided into three parts, this book reviews and discusses earthquake-induced damage evaluation in structures, the repair of structural and non-structural components, and seismic damage mitigation strategies. With contributions from the leading experts in the field, this book is for earthquake engineers, structural engineers, PhD students studying civil engineering, people who can easily inspect and repair structures for quick reoccupation, and for those who understand topics such as design and damage mitigation, and limited structural or non-structural damage in seismic events. Provides effective and economical methods to assess the seismic performance of structures Analyzes earthquake damage and repair or demolition of buildings Offers future needs for constructing seismic resistant structures
