Or so he imagines until he receives his first assignment. Instead of a safe consular post in a friendly country, Thomas is going to France to rescue Sabine Rousseau, the illegitimate daughter of Britain’s premiere. Sabine and Thomas must make their escape, and it won’t be easy. Her uncle considers her a ticket to curry favor with Napoleon and won’t let her disappear without a fight. To avoid detection, the couple must pretend to be amorous newlyweds and this proves the most difficult task of all. Because it isn’t long before neither of them is pretending and every night, there’s only one bed. (Previously published as The Spy's Fake Bride.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Matter of Choice represents a substantive discussion of the concept of choice in human affairs, taken against the backdrop of ethics and religion. Drawing on a range of contributions, Hodgkiss demonstrates in this study that, though often not the primary issue under consideration, a concern with choice has featured continually in human thought from the Hellenistic world of the Stoics to the post-Kantian environment of modern philosophy. Moreover, he argues that the social and historical dimension of choice has been consistently underplayed, and that the role of choice in modern economic and political developments is underestimated at our peril. Through a critical account of the literature, Hodgkiss adeptly diagnoses the insufficiency of the current conception of the choice-making sovereign individual in the contemporary liberal-democratic capitalist context and outlines the implications of this philosophy for the choice-maker.

He was about to start his junior year of college, and he was keenly focused on realizing his dream of becoming a high school teacher and coach. As C.B. was educating himself to start a career, his father, Mike, was preparing to retire from one. With the last of his four children nearing the end of school, Mike intended to exit from the work force, anticipating more free time to travel with his wife, Sharon. Each with plans of their own, father and son both eagerly awaited their futures. As chronicled in A Matter of Recovery, all of that would change in an instant one fateful night. A Matter of Recovery: The Story of C.B. Miller follows C.B., Mike, their family, and a community of friends through a challenging journey, one that begins with sheer survival and ends with hard-won success. By sharing their experiences with others, the Millers hope to not only inspire but also to inform. Millions of traumatic brain injury survivors face daily challenges. Many of them along with their loved ones do not know how to advocate for themselves as they encounter systems that are ill-equipped and people who are misinformed when it comes to dealing with TBI. If A Matter of Recovery helps just one person tackle the difficult tasks involved in making their own way, the Millers believe it will serve its purpose.

This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would the sprawling thirteenth-century French prose Lancelot-Grail Cycle have been attributed to Walter Map, a twelfth-century writer from the Anglo-Welsh borderlands known for his stinging satire, religious skepticism, ghost stories, and irrepressible wit? And why, though the attribution is spurious, is it not, in some ways, implausible? Joshua Byron Smith sets out to answer these and other questions in the first English-language monograph on Walter Map—and in so doing, he offers a new explanation for how narratives about the pre-Saxon inhabitants of Britain, including King Arthur and his knights, first circulated in England. Smith contends that it was inventive clerics like Walter, and not traveling minstrels or professional translators, who popularized these stories. Smith examines Walter's only surviving work, the De nugis curialium, to demonstrate that it is not the disheveled text that scholars have imagined but rather five separate works in various stages of completion. This in turn provides new evidence to support his larger contention, that ecclesiastical networks of textual exchange played a major role in exporting Welsh literary material into England. Medieval readers incorrectly envisioned Walter withdrawing ancient Latin documents about the Holy Grail from a monastery and compiling them in order to compose the Lancelot-Grail Cycle. In this detail they were wrong, Smith acknowledges, but a model of literary transmission that is not vernacular and popular but Latinate and ecclesiastical demands our serious consideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torin Alter presents a compelling defence of the 'knowledge argument' against physicalism, pioneered by Frank Jackson. According to physicalism, consciousness is a physical phenomenon. The knowledge argument stars Mary, who learns all objective, physical information through black-and-white media and yet acquires new information when she first sees colors for herself: information about what it is like to see in color. Based partly on that case, Jackson concludes that not all information is physical. Alter argues that the knowledge argument succeeds in refuting all standard versions of physicalism: versions on which consciousness is grounded by what objective science reveals. Alter also argues that given further, plausible assumptions, the knowledge argument leads to Russellian monism, according to which there are intrinsic properties that both constitute consciousness and underlie properties described by physics, such as mass and charge. Alter explains how the knowledge argument establishes those two conclusions and defend it against numerous objections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces relational thinking to political analysis. Instead of merely providing an overview of possible trajectories for articulating a relational political analysis, Peeter Selg and Andreas Ventsel put forth a concrete relational theory of the political, which has implications for research methodology, culminating in a concrete method they call political form analysis. In addition, they sketch out several applications of this theory, methodology and method. They call their approach “political semiotics” and argue that it is a fruitful way of conducting research on power, governance and democracy – the core dimensions of the political – in a manner that is envisioned in numerous discussions of the “relational turn” in the social sciences. It is the first monograph that attempts to outline an approach to the political that would be relational throughout, from its meta theoretical and theoretical premises through to its methodological implications, methods and empirical applications.
