Book excerpt: USA Today bestselling author Susan Mallery returns to the idyllic setting of her sensual Marcelli sisters trilogy—California wine country, where love and laughter flow, and where an unlikely couple discovers the one thing their hearts hunger for most: a place to call home. The rebel of the Marcelli family, Joe never joined his sisters Katie, Francesca, and Brenna in running the winery business. Instead, he chose a life of military service. But now that this handsome, headstrong former Navy SEAL has received a new, undercover assignment—protecting none other than the commander in chief's daughter—he finds himself stationed back at the California vineyard he defiantly left behind. First-daughter Darcy Jensen has been placed in hiding at the Marcelli Winery after surviving a kidnapping attempt, and now it's Joe's job to keep the fearful, fiery beauty out of harm's way. Begrudgingly, Joe heeds his presidential order—until "babysitting" Darcy proves to be the greatest pleasure he's ever known. How can Joe protect Darcy from danger, when he's falling dangerously in love? And can Darcy trust that Joe's intentions are true when no one else's have ever been?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of Dwight Worker's brutal imprisonment in the 'inescapable' Lecumberri Prison in Mexico City. The only person ever to have escaped from the 'Black Palace' of Lecumberri was Pancho Villa, in 1912. In Mexico, Dwight Worker met Barbara Chilcoate, whom he fell in love with and married. Together they devised a bold escape plan. They knew the odds, for Mexico had 'la ley de fuga', the law of escape. It was not illegal to try to escape from prison, as long as the would-be escapee did no violence against people and destroyed no state property. But if they caught him, they killed him. So any would be escapee had one and only one chance. The choices were either freedom or death. Read about how Dwight Worker ran this gauntlet to join Pancho Villa and become only the second person to escape from Lecumberri.

Book Synopsis The $16 Taco by : Pascale Joassart-Marcelli
Download or read book The $16 Taco written by Pascale Joassart-Marcelli and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-10-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having “discovered” the flavors of barbacoa, bibimbap, bánh mi, sambusas, and pupusas, white middle-class eaters are increasingly venturing into historically segregated neighborhoods in search of “authentic” eateries run by—and for—immigrants and people of color. This interest in “ethnic” food and places, fueled by media attention and capitalized on by developers, contributes to gentrification, and the very people who produced these vibrant foodscapes are increasingly excluded from them. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, geographer Pascale Joassart-Marcelli traces the transformation of three urban San Diego neighborhoods whose foodscapes are shifting from serving the needs of longtime minoritized residents who face limited food access to pleasing the tastes of wealthier and whiter newcomers. The $16 Taco illustrates how food can both emplace and displace immigrants, shedding light on the larger process of gentrification and the emotional, cultural, economic, and physical displacement it produces. It also highlights the contested food geographies of immigrants and people of color by documenting their contributions to the cultural food economy and everyday struggles to reclaim ethnic foodscapes and lead flourishing and hunger-free lives. Joassart-Marcelli offers valuable lessons for cities where food-related development projects transform neighborhoods at the expense of the communities they claim to celebrate.
