Book Synopsis Arab Orthodox Christians Under the Ottomans 1516–1831 by : Constantin Alexandrovich Panchenko
Download or read book Arab Orthodox Christians Under the Ottomans 1516–1831 written by Constantin Alexandrovich Panchenko and published by Holy Trinity Publications. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 966 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the so called "Arab Spring" the world's attention has been drawn to the presence of significant minority religious groups within the predominantly Islamic Middle East. Of these minorities Christians are by far the largest, comprising over 10% of the population in Syria and as much as 40% in Lebanon. The largest single group of Christians are the Arabic-speaking Orthodox. This work fills a major lacuna in the scholarship of wider Christian history and more specifically that of lived religion within the Ottoman empire. Beginning with a survey of the Christian community during the first nine hundred years of Muslim rule, the author traces the evolution of Arab Orthodox Christian society from its roots in the Hellenistic culture of the Byzantine Empire to a distinctly Syro-Palestinian identity. There follows a detailed examination of this multi-faceted community, from the Ottoman conquest of Syria, Palestine and Egypt in 1516 to the Egyptian invasion of Syria in 1831. The author draws on archaeological evidence and previously unpublished primary sources uncovered in Russian archives and Middle Eastern monastic libraries to present a vivid and compelling account of this vital but little-known spiritual and political culture, situating it within a complex network of relations reaching throughout the Mediterranean, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe. The work is made more accessible to a non-specialist reader by the addition of a glossary, whilst the scholar will benefit from a detailed bibliography of both primary and secondary sources. A foreword has been contributed to this first English language edition by the Patriarch of Antioch, John X. It contextualizes the history found in this work within the ongoing struggle to preserve the ancient Christian cultures of the Arabic speaking peoples from extinction within their ancestral homeland.

With his trademark style of getting right to the heart of theological concepts through practical, witty, and memorable examples from everyday life, Scot invites readers to explore: How Jesus prayed, How the Psalms teach us to pray, How Orthodox Christians pray, How Roman Catholics pray, How Anglicans pray, How The Divine Hours of Phyllis Tickle teaches us to pray, And, how praying with the church is an essential part of spiritual formation.

Book Synopsis Jesus: Fallen? by : Emmanuel Hatzidakis
Download or read book Jesus: Fallen? written by Emmanuel Hatzidakis and published by Orthodox Witness. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jesus Christ a fallen human being, like us? Was His human nature corrupt and sinful, inherently and necessarily subject to suffering and death? Did He inherit a fallen humanity? If His humanity was fallen how was He sinless? Did He have human ignorance? In what way was His human will involved in the plan of salvation? What effect did the hypostatic union have on His humanity? In Jesus: Fallen?, Emmanuel Hatzidakis, a Greek Orthodox priest, addresses these and other controversial questions pertaining to the human nature of Christ, which are debated in many Christian denominations, and in his own Church. The theology advanced in the book is the traditional theology of the historic Church. In all the modern confusio of multiple Christs, here we have the perennial image of the incarnate God, the Theanthropos Christ. The book should appeal to every serious Christian and student of theology, history of dogma and Church History who is comfortable neither with liberalism nor fundamentalism, but who is searching for the authentically true teachings of Christianity. Hatzidakis draws richly from the patristic inheritance of East and West in an original, refreshing, and accessible way. He refutes opinions formed by many eminent postlapsarian theologians. This pivotal study is the first to address this topic from an Eastern Orthodox perspective and in this regard it constitutes an important contribution to Christology. A well-researched study it sheds light from an Eastern Orthodox perspective on this intriguing and crucial topic. It maintains that the subject of Christ’s humanity and its understanding is neither a theologoumenon nor an abstract intellectual cogitation, but a matter of profound soteriological and anthropological import.

Download or read book Daily Prayer: A Modern Guide to Ancient Practices written by Joy F. Hilley and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost forty years, Joy Hilley has taught the Bible and prayed with women, men, and children. She's found that many who have a daily devotional life generally rely on a book that offers a scripture verse or two, a few paragraphs of the author's thoughts, and a short prayer. Some add their own prayers of thanks or petitions before going about their day. She calls that the "coffee and donut devotional." Enough fuel to get someone going, but not enough to sustain a life. Daily Prayer: A Modern Guide To Ancient Practices is a sacred resource for developing a prayer life that is rich, vibrant, and dynamic. Drawing from ancient Hebrew texts, the words of Jesus, early Church writings and practices, as well as The Book of Common Prayer, Joy provides a valuable guide-one with sufficient fuel for the journey.
