Book excerpt: The Coroners Court presents unique and complex challenges for coroners, lawyers and others working in the jurisdiction, as well as for bereaved families and friends. This new manual, written by a leading Australian coroner and an academic lawyer with a special interest in the cultural diversity of death rites and customs, provides practical guidance not available in any other single publication in Australia and New Zealand. The authors address the problems of: Identifying deaths reportable to coroners and the over-reporting of natural deaths Deciding the most appropriate, least invasive ways of conducting post mortem medical investigations Dealing with objections by next of kin to autopsies Responding sensitively and reasonably to the grief and concerns of the bereaved Understanding and accommodating the diversity of death customs and funeral rites in a multicultural society Selecting cases for inquest Managing the coronial investigation and the inquest Working with investigators and Counsel Assisting Analysing accidents, human error and systems failure Developing expertise in a wide range of technical issues Focusing the inquest on death prevention and improving public health and safety. A key feature of the manual is a collection of checklists, models, tools to aid decision-making and other practical resources that all coroners and practitioners in the jurisdiction will find invaluable, including thoughtful exercises for those new to the jurisdiction. The authors also provide tips for advocates working in the jurisdiction either as Counsel Assisting or representing families or interested parties.

Book Synopsis The Coronial Manual and the Bureaucratic Logic of the Coroner's Office by : Marc Trabsky
Download or read book The Coronial Manual and the Bureaucratic Logic of the Coroner's Office written by Marc Trabsky and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the coronial manual as a technique of occupying office in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The manual guided coroners in the performance of their duties, obligations and responsibilities. It was preoccupied with questions of technical knowledge, operational processes and administrative procedure. The language of office that characterised coronial treatises prior to the eighteenth century was gradually supplemented in the nineteenth century by the discourse of bureaucracy. This paper argues that the guidebook professionalised the office of coroner in Australia by setting out procedures, forms and rituals for assuming responsibility for the dead. It also provided advice to coroners for devoting themselves to a vocation in the public service. The paper thus traces historical shifts in the technology of the coronial manual in British colonies and examines how a bureaucratic logic of the coroner's office affected the way in which coroners pursued justice during the death investigation process.

Book Synopsis The Inquest Handbook by : Hugh Selby
Download or read book The Inquest Handbook written by Hugh Selby and published by Federation Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explains the role and objectives of the inquest. It highlights the forms of investigations in several types of fatal accident and gives guidance about the central legal issues and matters of case preparation and presentation. Starting with chapters on the law and the lawyer's preparation, it then discusses what the police do and why, the place of the autopsy, coroner's enquiries and recommendations, and the reasons for and extent of media interest. It covers the forms of investigations in road accidents, natural disasters, drug overdoses, medical or surgical mishaps, pathology and sudden unexpected infant death. It emphasises that inquests are collaborative ventures, often multi-disciplinary events and multi-party, too. Derrick W Hand, New South Wales State Coroner, recommends the book:"The Inquest Handbook is of great importance because it contains up-to-date, comprehensive information by persons considered expert in their field. Not only will it help those working in the coronial jurisdiction, it will also help others to understand the coronial process."
