Book Synopsis Engineering Project Appraisal by : Martin Rogers
Download or read book Engineering Project Appraisal written by Martin Rogers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most cases of civil engineering development, a range of alternative schemes meeting project goals are feasible, so some form of evaluation must be carried out to select the most appropriate to take forward. Evaluation criteria usually include the economic, environmental and social contexts of a project as well as the engineering challenges, so engineers must be familiar with the processes and tools used. The second edition of Engineering Project Appraisal equips students with the understanding and analytical tools to carry out effective appraisals of alternative development schemes, using both economic and non-economic criteria. The building blocks of economic appraisal are covered early, leading to techniques such as net present worth, internal rate of return and annual worth. Cost Benefit Analysis is dealt with in detail, together with related methods such as Cost Effectiveness and the Goal Achievement Matrix. The text also details three multi-criteria models which have proved useful in the evaluation of proposals in the transportation, solid waste, energy and water resources fields: the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) Model, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique and Concordance Analysis. There is a full discussion dealing with risk and uncertainty in these models. With many worked examples and case studies, Engineering Project Appraisal is an essential text for both undergraduate and postgraduate students on professional civil engineering courses, and it is expected that students on planning and construction management courses will find it a valuable addition to their reading.

Book Synopsis Strategic Project Risk Appraisal and Management by : Elaine Harris
Download or read book Strategic Project Risk Appraisal and Management written by Elaine Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success in business depends on two broad management skills: 'doing the right thing' (choosing the right projects) and 'doing things right' (good project management). This book examines the challenges that managers face in assessing the likely risks and benefits that need to be taken into account when choosing projects. It then explores the strategic level risks that will need to be dealt with in managing those projects and suggests risk management strategies. In so doing, it makes a rare but important link between strategic level appraisal of project opportunities and project risk management. Many projects have similar characteristics that are common to a number of projects experienced by the same or other organizations. Elaine Harris shows how the use of a project typology can guide project risk management by identifying common risks shared by projects of each type. Her cutting edge research will help advanced project practitioners and researchers in projects and risk management to develop a risk management strategy that is better suited to the context of their projects and one that is flexible enough to develop and adapt once the project decision has been taken and the real-world of project management and delivery begins.

Book Synopsis Evaluating Transnational Programs in Government and Business by : Vincent E. McHale
Download or read book Evaluating Transnational Programs in Government and Business written by Vincent E. McHale and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluating Transnational Programs in Government and Business is a collection of papers presented at a symposium entitled ""Evaluating Transnational Programs,"" conducted at Case Western Reserve University during the 1977-1978 academic year. The symposium was organized to address the various issues and controversies surrounding adequate methods for effective policy evaluation and assessment at the transnational level. The book explores the conceptual, methodological, bureaucratic, political, and organizational factors that hinder sound evaluation of government and private programs with transnational implications. This monograph consists of 11 chapters and opens with an introduction to methodological issues in the transnational field. It then reviews the development of various world modeling activities and compares them from the standpoints of characteristics, structure, methodological underpinnings, applications, and criticisms. The World Integrated Model is used to assess United States policy options regarding agricultural exports and oil imports by placing them in a broader transnational context. The following chapters focus on various problems in the evaluation of U.S. foreign economic policies, including foreign trade and investment policies. The criteria used by development banks in the processing of loan requests are also considered, along with non-economic objectives in economic development assistance programs; the role of multinational corporations as agents of technology transfer and their effects on changing U.S. policies regarding foreign investment. The final chapter deals with the growing need for transnational appraisal of the impacts of institutions on basic human values. This book will be of interest to business and government officials as well as social and political scientists.
