Book excerpt: Big Data in Psychiatry and Neurology provides an up-to-date overview of achievements in the field of big data in Psychiatry and Medicine, including applications of big data methods to aging disorders (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease), mood disorders (e.g., major depressive disorder), and drug addiction. This book will help researchers, students and clinicians implement new methods for collecting big datasets from various patient populations. Further, it will demonstrate how to use several algorithms and machine learning methods to analyze big datasets, thus providing individualized treatment for psychiatric and neurological patients. As big data analytics is gaining traction in psychiatric research, it is an essential component in providing predictive models for both clinical practice and public health systems. As compared with traditional statistical methods that provide primarily average group-level results, big data analytics allows predictions and stratification of clinical outcomes at an individual subject level. - Discusses longitudinal big data and risk factors surrounding the development of psychiatric disorders - Analyzes methods in using big data to treat psychiatric and neurological disorders - Describes the role machine learning can play in the analysis of big data - Demonstrates the various methods of gathering big data in medicine - Reviews how to apply big data to genetics

Book excerpt: The analysis of speech of people with Parkinson's disease is an interesting and highly relevant topic that has attracted the research community during several years. The advances in digital signal processing and pattern recognition have motivated the research community to work on the development of computational tools to perform automatic analysis of speech. Most of the contributions on this topic are focused on sustained phonation of vowels and only consider recordings of one language. This thesis addresses two problems considering recordings of sustained phonations of vowels and continuous speech signals: (1) the automatic classification of Parkinson's patients vs. healthy speakers, and (2) the prediction of the neurological state of the patients according to the motor section of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Recordings of three languages are considered: Spanish, German, and Czech. German and Czech data were provided by other researchers, and Spanish data were recorded in Medellin, Colombia, during the development of this work. Besides the classical approaches to assess pathological speech, a new method to model articulation deficits of Parkinson's patients is proposed. This new articulation modeling approach shows to be more accurate and robust than others to discriminate between Parkinson's patients and healthy speakers in the three considered languages.

Book excerpt: Cognitive impairment, through Alzheimer’s disease or other related forms of dementia, is a serious concern for afflicted individuals and their caregivers. Understanding patients’ mental states and combatting social stigmas are important considerations in caring for cognitively impaired individuals. Technology is playing an increasing role in the lives of the elderly. One of the most prevalent developments for the aging population is the use of technological innovations for intervention and treatment of individuals with mental impairments. Research Anthology on Diagnosing and Treating Neurocognitive Disorders examines the treatment, diagnosis, prevention, and therapeutic and technological interventions of neurodegenerative disorders. It also describes programs and strategies that professional and family caregivers can implement to engage and improve the quality of life of persons suffering from cognitive impairment. Highlighting a range of topics such as dementia, subjective wellbeing, and cognitive decline, this publication is an ideal reference source for speech pathologists, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, pediatricians, researchers, clinicians, and academicians seeking coverage on neurocognitive disorder identification and strategies for clinician support and therapies.

Book excerpt: Statistical Process Monitoring Using Advanced Data-Driven and Deep Learning Approaches tackles multivariate challenges in process monitoring by merging the advantages of univariate and traditional multivariate techniques to enhance their performance and widen their practical applicability. The book proceeds with merging the desirable properties of shallow learning approaches – such as a one-class support vector machine and k-nearest neighbours and unsupervised deep learning approaches – to develop more sophisticated and efficient monitoring techniques. Finally, the developed approaches are applied to monitor many processes, such as waste-water treatment plants, detection of obstacles in driving environments for autonomous robots and vehicles, robot swarm, chemical processes (continuous stirred tank reactor, plug flow rector, and distillation columns), ozone pollution, road traffic congestion, and solar photovoltaic systems. - Uses a data-driven based approach to fault detection and attribution - Provides an in-depth understanding of fault detection and attribution in complex and multivariate systems - Familiarises you with the most suitable data-driven based techniques including multivariate statistical techniques and deep learning-based methods - Includes case studies and comparison of different methods

However, we are beginning to understand that the disease manifests itself in many ways, and that earlier diagnosis might be possible through non-tremor symptoms. This textbook aims to tell the full story of non-motor and non-dopaminergic features of Parkinson's Disease.
