Book excerpt: This small town isn’t big enough for my grumpy lumberjack ex-boyfriend and me at Christmas… Now that I’m home in Mistletoe, Wisconsin for my favorite time of the year…nothing can ruin my holiday spirit. Not the frigid temps or impending blizzard, the bickering and gossip that swirls around our picturesque town, or even breaking my favorite ornament. Nothing… Except Luke Crisp. My grumpy ex-boyfriend seems set on making my stay unbearable. Starting the moment I step foot on his family’s Christmas tree farm. The growly lumberjack who once held my heart now grates on my last nerve. He hates this time of year and everything that comes with it. And he doesn’t seem very happy to see me, either. Those lips that once kissed mine now twist in a permanent scowl. His beautiful green eyes I used to get lost in only match his grinchy attitude. But something simmers just beneath his cool gaze. A heat that still ignites a fire deep inside me. So, when the snowstorm hits and we’re forced to hunker down and ride it out together, it makes for one very grumpy lumberjack Christmas. If you love spicy holiday romances with growly lumberjacks and feisty heroines, grab this standalone, small-town contemporary romance that gives you all the grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, second chance, angsty, steamy and spicy Christmas vibes you can handle!

Book excerpt: A beloved, bestselling classic of humorous and nostalgic Americana—the book that inspired the equally classic Yuletide film and the live musical on Fox. The holiday film A Christmas Story, first released in 1983, has become a bona fide Christmas perennial, gaining in stature and fame with each succeeding year. Its affectionate, wacky, and wryly realistic portrayal of an American family’s typical Christmas joys and travails in small-town Depression-era Indiana has entered our imagination and our hearts with a force equal to It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. This edition of A Christmas Story gathers together in one hilarious volume the gems of autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create this enduring film. Here is young Ralphie Parker’s shocking discovery that his decoder ring is really a device to promote Ovaltine; his mother and father’s pitched battle over the fate of a lascivious leg lamp; the unleashed and unnerving savagery of Ralphie’s duel in the show with the odious bullies Scut Farkas and Grover Dill; and, most crucially, Ralphie’s unstoppable campaign to get Santa—or anyone else—to give him a Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle. Who cares that the whole adult world is telling him, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid”? The pieces that comprise A Christmas Story, previously published in the larger collections In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories, coalesce in a magical fashion to become an irresistible piece of Americana, quite the equal of the film in its ability to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamlin Garland’s Main-Travelled Roads is recognized as one of the early landmarks of American literary realism. But Garland’s shift in mid-career from the harsh verisimilitude of Prairie Folks and Prairie Songs to a romanticizing of the Far West, and from ardent espousal of the principles of “veritism” to violent denunciations of naturalism, is a paradox which has long puzzled literary historians. In tracing the evolution of Garland’s work, the various reactions of his stories under the influence of editorial comment and of contemporary critical reaction, Jean Holloway suggests that the Garland apostasy was an illusion produced by his very intellectual immobility amidst the swirling currents of American thought. His extensive correspondence with Gilder of the Century, Alden of Harper’s Monthly, McClure of McClure’s, and Bok of the Ladies’ Home Journal is adduced in support of the thesis that the writer’s choices of subject and of treatment were psychologically forced rather than conditioned primarily by literary theory. As a subject for biography, however, Garland has an appeal far beyond the scope of his literary influence. The friendships of this gregarious peripatetic with the famous began with Howells, Twain, Whitman, and Stephen Crane, stretched down the years to include such younger men as Bret Harte and Carl Van Doren, and crossed the seas to embrace such British literary lions as Barrie, Shaw, and Kipling. Garland’s fervent espousal of “causes”—the Single Tax Movement, psychic experimentation, Indian rights-brought him into close contact with other prominent men—Henry George, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Jennings Bryan. These public figures form the incidental characters in Garland’s spate of autobiographical works. Yet it is the central figure of his own story which has become permanently identified with the “Middle Border,” that region “between the land of the hunter and the harvester” which Augustus Thomas defined as “wherever Hamlin Garland is.” In A Son of the Middle Border Garland nostalgically recreated his boyhood on the frontier and, regardless of the detractions of literary critics, preserved for posterity an important segment of American social history.

Book excerpt: From the author of the Faith, Love & Devotion series, Tere Michaels embarks on an adventure of magical realism and romantic comedy in a new mixed couple series. Baker Annalee Martelli is not a Holiday PersonTM. A family feud and a contentious divorce make the holiday insistence on family togetherness depressing, and she much prefers hiding away from humanity in the kitchen of the tiny NYC bakery where she works. If that wasn’t enough to make her grind her teeth in November, her boss suddenly goes MIA after a “quick weekend trip” to her quaint hometown upstate turns into weeks of unanswered calls and emails. With the crazy holiday rush approaching, Annalee girds her loins and heads to Pine Lake to find her boss and save her job. While avoiding getting nature on her boots. Cam Berijssoen has lived his entire life in Pine Lake, the perfectly picturesque jewel of the Hudson Valley where frost sparkles on the pines, there’s always a parade or festival in the town square, and an unusual number of their visitors decide to stay. Permanently. He helps run his parents’ hotel and dreams of a life that doesn’t involve so many trees (he has allergies) and achieving the happiness everyone else seems to find in Pine Lake. Annalee and Cam both have good reason to want out of Pine Lake. When a series of events drops a world of possibilities in their laps, it seems to be time to take a leap of faith. Can a grumpy city girl and a charming master of hospitality make their dreams come true together? (But not like...together together. Right?) Pine Lake has one rule - Fall in Love. Or Else.
