Book excerpt: The Canadian Wildlife Service is currently responsible for advising on risks to wildlife and their habitats associated with the new or continuing use of pesticides in Canada. To facilitate the development of exposure scenarios for risk assessment and the design of field studies, databases and supporting documentation were developed on the extent and bird use of farmland habitat in the mixed-wood plain (MWP) ecozone in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region. Data was abstracted from scientific publications, graduate theses and government reports since 1950 for studies conducted in Canada and the US with agricultural practices similar to those in the MWP. Bird use data (37 percent from Canadian study locations) was tabulated for 56 farmland habitats (including 35 crops) by species, month, activity (e.g., feeding, nesting), and intensity of use. This report presents the results of that study, including data on land use by type of crop, bird use by crop, and an annotated bibliography.

» -- Résumé, p. i.

Book excerpt: The apparent decline in numbers among many species of migratory songbirds is a timely subject in conservation biology, particularly for ornithologists, ecologists, and wildlife managers. This book is an attempt to discuss the problem in full scope. It presents an ambitious, comprehensive assessment of the current status of neotropical migratory birds in the U.S., and the methods and strategies used to conserve migrant populations. Each chapter is an essay reviewing and assessing the trend from a different viewpoint, all written by leaders in the fields of ornithology, conservation, and population biology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we assume the editorship of Current Ornithology, it seems useful to review the objectives of the series. We cannot improve on the state ments of our predecessors when they began their service as editors. In his preface to Volume 1 (1983), Richard F. Johnston wrote: The appearance of the first volume of a projected series is the occasion for comment on scope, aims, and genesis of the work. The scope of Current Or nithology is all of the biology of birds. Ornithology, as a whole-organism sci ence, is concerned with birds at every level of biological organization, from the molecular to the community, at least from the Jurassic to the present time, and over every scholarly discipline in which bird biology is done; to say this is merely to expand a dictionary definition of "ornithology. " The aim of the work, to be realized over several volumes, is to present reviews or position statements concerning the active fields of ornithological research. Dennis M. Power, who edited Volumes 6-12 (1989-1995), began his preface to Volume 6 (1989) as follows: This edited series has three principal goals. The first is to provide information in a relatively concise way for researchers needing an overview of specific disciplines. The second is to provide an update on specific schools of thought, bringing together ideas from colleagues whose works often appear in a variety of journals. And the third is to stimul&te and suggest directions for new re search.

Book excerpt: Point counts of birds are the most widely used quantitative method and involve an observer recording birds from a single point for a standardized time period. In response to the need for standardization of methods to monitor bird populations by census, researchers met to present data from various investigations working under a wide variety of conditions, and to examine various aspects of point count methodology. Statistical aspects of sampling and analysis were discussed and applied to the objectives of point counts. The final chapter presents these standards and their applications to point count methodology.

Book excerpt: To improve the basis for federal environmental assessments and management decisions regarding agricultural land use in Southern Ontario, an inventory was taken of regional and provincial databases related to land use, farming operations and practices, and wildlife and wildlife habitat distributions. Eleven areas of interest were defined and researched. Contacts were made with many federal, provincial, and non-governmental organizations involved with land use and conservation efforts and information was gathered via correspondence, telephone, or personal interviews. Emphasis was put on databases that are referenced geographically and thereby amenable to spatial analysis. A brief description of the contents, spatial extent and resolution, volume, structure, and availability is provided for each of 98 databases.
