Book excerpt: The sixteenth-century Conquistadors, led by Pizarro, came to Peru for three reasons--God, gold, and glory, but after the initial glory of their conquest they tended to concentrate on gold, rather than God. Direct colonial rule by Spain lasted for almost three hundred years, only ending in 1826, when the last Spanish flag was hauled down from the battlements of Real Felipe Fortress. However, just a few short years after Peru had declared its independence from Spain, the attention of some people in Lima began to focus on a potential source of untold wealth that was to prove more precious than gold. This was guano which, in its greatest concentration, was found on the diminutive Chincha Islands that lie just off the Peruvian coast, some seventy miles south of Callao. This book covers the story of this international guano trade. It outlines the fate of the unfortunates recruited to cut and load the guano. It also gives full details of the hardships endured by mariners employed in this trade. The story of those who grew rich on the proceeds of this trade is also outlined. Importantly, it explains just how the Peruvian government mismanaged the trade, to the extent that Peru became burdened with debts, rather than prospering on the proceeds of their vast new guano-based income.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the world’s most respected authorities on precious metals investment—a thoroughly researched volume on the investment prospects for silver, the other gold. Gold, outperforming stocks for over a decade, has finally been recognized as a serious asset class to be included in any solid, diversified investment portfolio. Considering present inflationary concerns related to accelerating fiscal crises in Europe, the United States and likely Japan in the years ahead, gold is widely held in the largest professionally-managed portfolios in the world. But silver, which has been moving in the same direction as its sister metal for forty years—and actually outperforming gold over the last ten years—has yet to be taken seriously in the investment world. Widely perceived as an erratic, unpredictable metal best left to speculators, silver has been disdained primarily for its volatility. Taking the long view, as well as a hard look at silver’s investment demerits, Shayne McGuire examines current global financial conditions in order to provide a full and frank assessment of present and future opportunities for investors who may be considering buying silver. Silver is being rediscovered as a viable alternative to gold, and demand for the metal as an investment vehicle has risen sharply over the past few years Though more volatile than gold, silver is highly correlated with the more expensive metal and should continue moving in the same direction (as it has for thousands of years) Widely considered a precious metals expert within the institutional investor community and author of Hard Money: Taking Gold to a Higher Investment Level, McGuire manages a portfolio with over $850 million in precious metals investments While the investment literature is overflowing with books on how to invest in gold, this is the first serious book in decades offering expert insights, advice and guidance on investing in silver

However, the other countries suffered a lot. In this book all those events are related to ego. The book begins with an overview which shows how humans developed. The five virtues of human character have been defined first and then how humans set different parameters all around the world been shown. We know humans are not treated equally because they developed a lot of macro and micro fences around themselves for the sake of society, religion, countries and so on. All those fences are the worst result of ego. Furthermore, this book is formatted in a cycle which starts with humans and ends with humans. Meanwhile, human follows a long journey of changes from where the ego shoots up. Ego is firmly holding the modern societies, and this book will introduce the journey of ego to the readers. Lastly, human are not mean to be egoistic. But the way they built up, they harmed Mother Nature, is completely devastating. Billions of people suffered and are still suffering because of the hardship that humans brought during the progression is shown in an order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astonishing variety of captivity narratives emerged in the fifty years following the American Revolution; however, discussions about them have usually focused on accounts of Native American captivities. To most readers, then, captivity narratives are synonymous with "godless savages," the vast frontier, and the trials of kidnapped settlers. This anthology, the first to bring together various types of captivity narratives in a comparative way, broadens our view of the form as it shows how the captivity narrative, in the nation-building years from 1770 to 1820, helped to shape national debates about American liberty and self-determination. Included here are accounts by Indian captives, but also prisoners of war, slaves, victims of pirates and Barbary corsairs, impressed sailors, and shipwreck survivors. The volume's seventeen selections have been culled from hundreds of such texts, edited according to scholarly standards, and reproduced with the highest possible degree of fidelity to the originals. Some selections are fictional or borrow heavily from other, true narratives; all are sensational. Immensely popular with American readers, they were also a lucrative commodity that helped to catalyze the explosion of print culture in the early Republic. As Americans began to personalize the rhetoric of their recent revolution, captivity narratives textually enacted graphic scenes of defiance toward deprivation, confinement, and coercion. At a critical point in American history they helped make the ideals of nationhood real to common citizens.
