Lee He had lived, as he died, with this supreme trust in an overruling and merciful Providence: and this sentiment, pervading his whole being, was the origin Of that august calmness with which he greeted the most crushing disasters of his military career. His faith and humble trust sustained him after the war, when the woes of the South wellnigh broke his great spirit; and he calmly expired, as a weary child falls asleep, knowing that its father is near. Lee passed from the scenes of his illustrious deeds, public interest in the great soldier and his career is still active, and turns with increasing curiosity to any attractive recital of the incidents in his eventful life - many as are the biographies that have already been published of him. Nor is this perennial interest in the loved hero of "a Lost Cause" to be wondered at, when we recall not only the historical importance of the long struggle in which he so nobly fought, and against such heavy odds; but the remarkable military ability and eminently high character of the man whose career is identified with the great conflict, and whose life-story is throughout so attractive and inspiring. The era is now passed when, in the North, Confederates and their sympathizers were hotly stigmatized as "rebels," and when their attitude and their cause were aspersed as hateful as well as treasonable. Lee I have been led to the preparation of this work by a desire to collect in a useful and convenient form a history of the achievements of the great soldier, recently at the head of the armies of the South; and as he is endeared to his countrymen chiefly by his connection with them in the gallant struggle which has just closed, I have devoted the greater part of these pages to that portion of his life, passing over the preceding with as little delay as possible. I have brought to the execution of this task a sincere desire to lay aside the feelings engendered by four years of war, and to investigate fully, and discuss impartially and truthfully, the topics that are presented in this volume. I have spared no pains to render my sources of information as complete as possible. In May 1861, I commenced to collect such papers and documents, both official and unofficial, relating to the war, as I could procure. To this task, begun for a purpose not altogether different from that to which I have now applied it, I devoted the entire period of the war, and was aided in it by many members of the various branches of the Confederate Government and of the army. In this way I secured an extensive and valuable collection of materials for a history of the war, or biographies of the individuals connected with it; a collection embracing over fifteen thousand papers of all kinds, to which, through the kindness of friends, I have been able to add many valuable maps and charts. Lee: Delivered on the 12th of October, 1871, Before the Society of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors, in Maryland Mr. President and Members of the Society: The survivors of the Confederate Army and Navy id Maryland, have done me the honor to invite me to address them on this anniversary, so full of mournful interest to the South, and they have given me the grand theme which has already engaged, and will engage for generations to come, the ablest pens and the most eloquent tongues in Christendom, "The Life and Character Op Robert Lee." Whilst appreciating the compliment that brings me before you, it is with a profound sense of my inability to "rise to the height of this great argument," that I assume the duty your kindness has imposed. Nor would I venture to do so, comrades of the Confederate service, were it not that it seems to me no duty can be more sacred than that which bids every true man of the South, at all times, by all means, in all places, to pay homage to the character, and honor to the memory of our great leader. To myself, whose good fortune it was to follow that illustrious Chief, from the beginning to the close of the marvellous career, which has placed his name by the side of those of the world's greatest captains, - who witnessed his grand magnanimity in the flush of his proudest triumphs, - his sublime serenity in the hour of disaster, - who was sustained by his constant faith in the justice of our cause, encouraged by his kindness, and honored by his friendship, - this call to join in doing honor to his memory, has the sanctity and the tenderness that death, and death alone, can give. Once again, and for the last time, I seem placed on duty in the service of my old Commander, and the voice that summons me here, waking many of the proudest, though saddest, emotions of my heart, comes from the tomb of him, who, though "dead, yet speaketh." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Robert E. Lee: His Military and Personal History To overcome the inactivity to which loss of sight has for some years subjected me, I have sought occupation in record ing the recollection of familiar events. Having obtained a slate prepared for the use of the blind, I soon learned to write with a moderate degree of legibility. In order to excite a pleasing interest in my work, I undertook something that might prove of future benefit. Having served on General Lee's personal stafl' during the most important period of his military career, I began an eye-witness narrative of his cam paigns in the war between the States. In the execution of my work I received valuable assistance from my wife and daughter, my two sons, and Miss Lucy Shackelford (now Mrs. Charles Walker), all of whom lovingly and faithfully served me as copyists and readers. I am also indebted to Colonel C. S. Venable of General Lee's stafi', Major Green Peyton of Rodes's staff, and Major S. V. Southall of my own staff, for indispensable aid in reviewing my manuscript, informing me of facts that had not come to my knowledge or reminding me of such as had escaped my recollection. My work is now completed, and I offer it to the public, hoping it may prove of value as a record of events which passed under my own observation, and many of which have been described directly from my notes made at the time of their occurrence. It is not intended to be a history of the war in detail, but a state ment of my personal knowledge of General Lee's life, actions, and character, and of the part played by him in the great events of which he was the ruling spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Robert Edward Lee: Soldier and Man It is not my purpose in this book to treat Of the great war 'between the States, its causes, its conduct, or its results. Nor can I treat fully, in the space I shall use, Of Lee the soldier, or Lee the man. But as it was my proud privilege to know General Lee in war and in peace, and to enjoy some peculiar facilities for studying his life and character, I think I may, without improper egotism, claim some qualifications for writing Of him as he really was. In the Army I came in somewhat frequent contact with him, but when he was President of Washington College from Octo ber, 186 5, to October, 1870, I was one Of his chaplains, and came into almost daily association with him, making it my business, as it was my great pleasure, to study those noble traits which made him grander in peace than in war. I was one of that band of loving hands who bore him to the tomb, when two con tinents mourned his death, and I had the honor Of being selected by Mrs. Lee and the faculty Of the College to edit the Lee Memorial Volume which it was proposed to publish soon after his death. When the publication of that book was abandoned I was encouraged and authorized to publish, with their full approval, my Personal Reminiscences, Anecdotes, and Letters of R. E. Lee. At that time I was given free access to General Lee's private letters and papers, and from that day I have carefully studied and preserved everything concerning him that has been published, or which I have been able to pro cure. I come, then, to my present task with full knowledge of my subject and with warm and loving heart, desiring to present Lee to the world as I knew, and honored, and loved him myself. I should be unworthy Of the great man Of whom I write if I should allow to creep into this book any Of the bitter memories Of a stormy past, any partisan expression, anything which could reasonably Offend the most sensitive Of any section of our common country. Lee, for Boys and Girls This book is written with the hope that through it the life and character of Lee may become more real to the generation of young Americans now growing up. His was a life worthy of study by all young people, particularly those who are Americans. In the happy day to which we are now come, when the division between the sections, for years past one of sentiment alone, is fast disappearing, the Nation as a whole pays tribute to the lofty character, the sturdy Americanism, and the essential greatness of Robert Edward Lee no less than to that of Abraham Lincoln. If this little book, by making better known the character and purity of motive of Lee and those he represented, may in some degree hasten the time when the last trace of bitterness between the North and South shall have disappeared, the authors will feel that it has well fulfilled its purpose. There is a certain appropriateness in the year of its appearance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
