Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lecture on the Law of Representations in Marine Insurance: With Notes and Illustrations The Lecture "Of Representations" now published, is extracted from an extensive work on Marine Insurance, which the author during the past year has been engaged in preparing, and to the completion of which, all the hours of labor that the immediate duties of his profession may allow him, will hereafter be devoted. Although the views contained in this Lecture, it is believed, are fully sustained by the authorities, it must be confessed, that in some respects, they differ widely from those of former elementary writers, and hence, before he finally adopts them, the author is desirous to submit them to the critical judgment of the profession in England, as well as in the United States. He is also desirous to have the judgment of the profession on the general plan of his intended work, which is meant to embrace a wider range of research, a fuller discussion of principles, and a more thorough and critical analysis of the adjudged cases than have been hitherto attempted. Of this plan, and of the mode of its probable execution, he is willing that the Lecture now published, with its Notes and Illustrations, shall be regarded not merely as a sufficient, but as a favorable specimen.
