The engineer faced with the design of such a system, or of additions to an existing system, has to select the sizes of its components. Also he has to consider the way in which the operational components, pumps and valves, will be used to supply the required demands with adequate pressures. The network has to perform adequately under varying demand loads, hydraulic and operational conditions. Operational decisions for these loads are essentially part of the design process, since one cannot separate the so-called design decisions, i.e. the sizing of components, from the operational decisions; they are two inseparable parts of one problem. This work has therefore presented a method for optimizing the design of a water distribution network system using pipe diameter as decision variable under the required demand loading and hydraulic conditions. It has been established that increasing the minimum pressure will lead to the reduction in the required pipe diameter which will in turn reduce the cost of installation. The modelling approach developed can be used by engineers and planners to obtain economical pipe sizes for a network designed to serve newly planned layouts.

Book excerpt: This study gives a description about the development of a computer model, RealPipe, which relates genetic algorithm (GA) to the well known problem of least-cost design of water distribution network. GA methodology is an evolutionary process, basically imitating evolution process of nature. GA is essentially an efficient search method basically for nonlinear optimization cases. The genetic operations take place within the population of chromosomes. By means of various operators, the genetic knowledge in chromosomes change continuously and the success of the population progressively increases as a result of these operations. GA optimization is also well suited for optimization of water distribution systems, especially large and complex systems. The primary objective of this study is optimization of a water distribution network by GA. GA operations are realized on a special program developed by the author called RealPipe. RealPipe optimizes given water network distribution systems by considering capital cost of pipes only.

Book excerpt: The design of distribution networks is an integral factor in the planning process of water supply systems. Models concerning this design process contain the problem of selecting pipe diameters for a given layout of the network. Assuming the demand to be estimated for a certain point of time and the costs for pipes of different diameters to be known, this stationary problem can be formulated as a nonlinear global optimization problem. Restrictions to the pressure head and the calculations of head-loss due to friction in the pipes imply nonlinear constraints. Heuristic as well as deterministic algorithms have been developed during the last 30 years to solve this problem. Their implementation is based on floating point arithmetic. In a branch and bound algorithm the decision for every branch depends on numerical results. Therefore even small errors may have farreaching consequences. In the context of this thesis the software package WaTerInt has been developed which contains the first verified algorithm for water distribution design optimization to avoid this problem. WaTerInt is based on the branch and bound algorithm developed by Sherali, Subramanian and Loganathan and results from interval analysis, allowing rigorous bounds together with a guarantee of existence and uniqueness. Furthermore, a new additional constraint propagation technique is introduced which decreases the computational time for expansion networks by approximately one third to one half. The computational results using non-verified floating point calculations are found to show numerical artifacts. For example, it is possible that a problem is identified as infeasible that in reality does have a solution, or that the lower bound for the optimal solution is larger than the upper bound. Using verified calculations, these artifacts are avoided, the obtained results are always reliable. Nevertheless for this improved quality, in the current implementation the computational time for verified calculations takes on average fifteen times the time needed for the calculation without error analysis when relying just on pure floating point arithmetic. This factor could probably be decreased when not depending on interpretation overhead of MATLAB, especially for object orientation. In addition to the model based on Hazen-Williams formula as used by Sherali, Subramanian and Loganathan, the optimization problem is reformulated to contain Darcy-Weisbach and Colebrook-White equations. The algorithm has been expanded to be able to solve this more accurate problem as well, and again a verified version is presented. Essentially, detailed investigation of the nonlinearity of the implicitly defined Colebrook-White equation was necessary to retain certain monotonicity and convexity arguments. The adjacency property is proved for this new problem as well. However, the computational effort is around forty times higher than for the Hazen-Williams problem. To combine the advantages of the Darcy-Weisbach optimization problem with the more simple structure and lower computational times of Hazen-Williams, the coefficients of this formula are adjusted to obtain a closer approximation. Finally, verified results have been used to compare results obtained for different head loss formulae and hydraulic parameters for known test networks. When regarding the whole life span of a pipe network it occurs that energy costs form a significant part of the overall costs, except when water is mainly delivered by gravity. In summary, recently developed verification techniques are combined with a branch and bound algorithm to investigate the practicability of obtaining error estimates along with the calculation of the optimal solution of a nonlinear optimization problem. They are applied to water network distribution design, both to the known branch and bound algorithm of Sherali, Subramanian and Loganathan and to the one for the more realistic network model based on the Darcy-Weisbach equation.

Book excerpt: The burdensome capital cost of urban water distribution systems demands the use of efficient optimization methods capable of finding a relatively inexpensive design that guarantees a minimum functionality under all conditions of operation. The combinatorial and nonlinear nature of the optimization problem involved accepts no definitive method of solution. Adaptive search methods are well fitted for this type of problem (to which more formal methods cannot be applied), but their computational requirements demand the development and implementation of additional heuristics to find a satisfactory solution. This work seeks to employ adaptive search methods to enhance the search process used to find the optimal design of any water distribution system. A first study presented here introduces post-optimization heuristics that analyze the best design obtained by a genetic algorithm--arguably the most popular adaptive search method--and perform an ordered local search to maximize further cost savings. When used to analyze the best design found by a genetic algorithm, the proposed post-optimization heuristics method successfully achieved additional cost savings that the genetic algorithm failed to detect after an exhaustive search. The second study herein explores various ways to improve artificial neural networks employed as fast estimators of computationally intensive constraints. The study presents a new methodology for generating any large set of water supply networks to be used for the training of artificial neural networks. This dataset incorporates several distribution networks in the vicinity of the search space in which the genetic algorithm is expected to focus its search. The incorporation of these networks improved the accuracy of artificial neural networks trained with such a dataset. These neural networks consistently showed a lower margin of error than their counterparts trained with conventional training datasets populated by randomly generated distribution networks.

Book excerpt: Traditional mathematical optimization methods, such as linear programming (LP), nonlinear programming (NLP) and dynamic programming (DP), often have drawbacks in practice. To overcome these drawbacks, various meta-heuristic optimization techniques have been developed. This study proposes a new meta- heuristic algorithm which mimics musical performance, and names as Harmony Search (HS). The HS algorithm is applied to five problems: a continuous function optimization, a hydrologic parameter calibration, a traveling salesman problem, an optimal design of water supply network, and an optimal expansion of water supply network. The comparison of solutions obtained by HS and other optimization techniques shows that the HS algorithm can find better solutions in less number of iterations. The new algorithm can solve continuous-variable problems as well as discrete- variable problems without unnecessary restrictions imposed by calculus-based algorithms.

The accurate network performance measures such as reliability or failure tolerance are very time consuming calculations, thus surrogate measures are used for water distribution network (WDN) design optimization. Entropy is particularly advantageous since it involves only the flow in the pipe and the demands at the nodes. This thesis developed efficient new computational methods based on the maximum entropy formalism for the optimization of water distribution systems. Thus the maximum entropy based design approach has been extended here to include multiple operation conditions. Also, the path-related properties of the flow entropy have been exploited to develop a new self-adaptive approach for solution space reduction in multiobjective evolutionary optimization of water distribution systems that resulted in a significant reduction in the number of function evaluations required to find optimal and near optimal solutions. The novelty and originality of the current research are presented next. A new penalty-free multi-objective evolutionary optimization approach for the design of WDNs has been developed. It combines genetic algorithm with least cost design and maximum entropy. The approach can handle single operating conditions (SOC) as well as multiple operating conditions (MOC) for any given network. Previously, most of the work has been done for single loading patterns and it was assumed that nodal demands are constant. In reality nodal demand vary over the time so network designed to satisfy one operating condition might not be able to satisfy other loading patterns (i.e. pressure constraints might not be meet). The model has been applied to three well known water distribution networks. The approach has also been implemented on a large real-world network in the literature. Three different methods of designing for multiple loading patterns were investigated. Extensive testing proved that MOC outperform SOC in terms of hydraulic feasibility, pipe size distribution and reliability. The approach is computationally efficient and robust. The above mentioned penalty-free approach has been extended to form a module that would improve the convergence criteria of the GA by reducing its search space. For large real-world network GA might require extremely large number of function evaluations which could lead to delayed convergence. By reducing the search space, the GA's effectiveness and efficiency will increase as the algorithm will identify the solutions in smaller number of function evaluations. The search space reduction method presented herein is based on entropy and uses the importance of every path through network, which is an inherent property of the entropy function. The developed algorithm is dynamic, self-adaptive and does not require pre-defining the reduced sets of candidate diameters for each pipe. The method has been applied to a large network from the literature. Two cases were studied, one based on full search space and one for reduce search space (RSS) approach. Rapid stabilization was observed for the results obtained using RSS.
