Book excerpt: Neutrinos can arguably be labeled as the most fascinating elementary particles known as their small but non-zero rest mass points to new mass generating mechanisms beyond the Standard Model, and also assigns primordial neutrinos from the Big Bang a distinct role in shaping the evolution of large-scale structures in the universe. The open question of the absolute neutrino mass scale will be addressed by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, currently under construction. This thesis reports major contributions to developing and implementing new laser-spectroscopic precision tools to continuously monitor the isotope content of the windowless gaseous tritium source of KATRIN. The method of choice, Raman spectroscopy, is ideally suited for in-situ monitoring of all six hydrogen isotopologues. In a series of beautiful experiments the author obtained two independent novel calibration methods, first based on a comparison of experimental Raman depolarization ratios with corresponding quantum-chemical calculations, and second on a gas sampling technique. Both methods yield consistent cross-calibration results and, as well as yielding improvements in precision, will be of major importance in reducing systematic effects in long-term neutrino mass measurements. The methods developed in this thesis also have great potential to further broaden the applications of Raman spectroscopy to study extended sources such as in atmospheric physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutrino oscillation mixing angle & theta;sub13\sub was the last mixing angle that had not been determined precisely in 2006 when I started my Ph. D studies. It is exciting to witness how & theta;sub13\sub has evolved from a limit to a precisely measured mixing angle in a short period. The Double Chooz reactor neutrino experiment was the first to report strong evidence for a non-vanishing value of & theta;sub13\sub at the beginning of 2012. The latest analysis, which includes a combined & ldquo;rate+shape & rdquo; analysis of hydrogen and gadolinium capture inverse & beta; & ndash;decay events, has yielded sin\super2\super 2 & theta;sub13\sub = 0.109 & plusmn; 0.035 with only one detector running. This value is consistent with the current numbers from the Daya Bay and Reno experiments. In such a high-precision experiment, precise calibrations are crucial in reaching the ultimate sensitivity. The laser calibration system was developed by the University of Alabama group to calibrate PMT constants such as gains and time offsets, as well as measure the charge likelihoods which are used in the event energy reconstruction and supplement the time likelihoods in improving the position reconstruction accuracy. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the hardware and software development of the laser calibration system, as well as MC studies and data analyses for extracting the PMT gains, time offsets and charge likelihoods. The event reconstruction utilizes the PMT time and charge information to determine the event location and energy, which are essential parameters for all physics analyses. A good understanding of the detector response significantly reduces the detector related systematic errors and improves the sensitivity, especially in the two detector phase, where the dominant uncertainties from the reactor flux mostly cancel out. The third part of this thesis is dedicated to the reconstruction algorithm developed by our group, position accuracy studies and energy reconstruction studies, which aims towards fully understanding the detector response.

The fact that neutrinos have mass has only been proved in the last few years and the acceptance of that fact has opened up a whole new area of study to understand the fundamental parameters of the mixing matrix. The book summarizes the results from all the experiments which have played a role in the measurement of neutrino oscillations and briefly describes the scope of some new planned experiments. Contributions include a theoretical introduction by Stephen Parke from FNAL, as well as articles from all the major experimental groups who have been pivotal in uncovering the nature of the neutrino mass.

Book excerpt: A new type of laser particulate detection instrument has proved extremely valuable in the design and monitoring of oil removal systems for cryogenic refrigeration systems. When located at the inlet of a refrigerator, any aerosol or particulates that could be harmful to the operation of the refrigerator would be detected. Its main features include: in situ measurement of particulates in the high pressure helium continuous monitoring with alarm capabilities which permits automatic shutdown of attended or unattended systems, sensitivity down to a few parts per billion, long-term stability on the order of 10 ppB, and straightforward data interpretation. The concept of continuous automatic calibration and baseline zero adjustment relieves the operator of any manual adjustments or loss of confidence in the signal levels recorded. The 1-second response time allows instant turnoff if the filters experience an oil breakthrough or if an operator inadvertently opens bypass valves around the oil removal system. The stripchart recording allows for long-term comparison of particulate levels to determine if a buildup is occurring and its rate of buildup. It will also aid in predicting the amount of contaminants frozen out in the refrigerator and the operating time remaining before refrigerator shutdown and warmup is required. 8 figures.

Book excerpt: The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will push forward the frontiers of our understanding of the physics governing neutrino interactions and oscillations. The performance of this experiment relies heavily upon a functional and well-calibrated system of near detectors (ND), comprised of three independent detectors. Of these three detectors, the upstream Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) is considered to be the primary target due to its precision and similarity to the DUNE far detector units. The ND LArTPC detector will utilize novel detection techniques such as a highly-segmented drift volume with modularized charge and light readout systems, a pixelated charge readout system for unabmiguous 3D reconstruction of charge, and integrated field shaping devices. These technologies, in combination with the high-rate environment of the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) beam necessitate careful understanding of the drift field and electronics response over time. This thesis describes the design of the integrated near detector program, including the Precision Reaction-Independent Spectrum Measurement (PRISM) system for high-precision measurement of the unoscillated neutrino flux at the beam source site. This system allows for motion of the two upstream ND components in the direction transverse to the beam source, allowing for sampling of off-axis flux, granting access to the angular dependence of beam production parameters, and enabling interaction model independent measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters. This thesis will also discuss a program for spatial calibration of the LArTPC component of the near detector system (ND-LAr, or ArgonCube) using both cosmic rays and a dedicated laser photoelectric charge injection system. Included is an example of this calibration scheme in the Module-0 and Module-1 prototype detectors and an analysis of the findings of these measurements.

Book excerpt: Particle physics is the science that pursues the age-old quest for the innermost structure of matter and the fundamental interactions between its constituents. Modern experiments in this field rely increasingly on calorimetry, a detection techniques in which the particles of interest are absorbed in the detector. Calorimeters are very intricate instruments, their performance characteristics depend in subtle, sometimes counter-intuitive ways on design details. This book, written by one of the world's foremost experts, is the first comprehensive text on this topic. It provides a fundamental and systematic introduction, in which many intriguing calorimeter features are explained. It also describes the state of the art, both for what concerns the fundamental understanding of calorimetric particle detection and the actual detectors that have been or are being built and operated in experiments. In the last chapter, some landmark scientific discoveries in which calorimetry has played an important role are discussed. This book summarizes and puts into perspective work described in some 600 scientific papers, listed in the bibliography.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the author’s work at the Double Chooz Experiment, from 2010 to 2013, the goal of which was to search for electronic anti-neutrino disappearance close to nuclear power plant facilities as a result of neutrino oscillation. Starting with a brief review of neutrino oscillation and the most important past experimental findings in this field, the author subsequently provides a full and detailed description of a neutrino detector, from simulation aspects to detection principles, as well as the data analysis procedure used to extract the oscillation parameters. The main results in this book are 1) an improvement on the mixing angle, θ13, uncertainty by combining two data-sets from neutrino event selection: neutron capture on gadolinium and on hydrogen; and 2) the first measurement of the effective squared mass difference by combining the current reactor neutrino experimental data from Daya Bay, Double Chooz and RENO and taking advantage of their different reactor-to-detector distances. The author explains how these methods of combining data can be used to estimate these two values. Each method results in the best possible sensitivity for the oscillation parameters with regard to reactor neutrinos. They can be used as a standard method on the latest data releases from the current experiments.

Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meantto whet the appetite for further reading.
