The first canovaccio of this book came out in 1980 when I was invited by Computational Mechanics in the United Kingdom to give my first Air Pollution Modeling course. The course material, in the form of transparencies, expanded, year after year, thus providing a growing working basis. In 1985, the ECC Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, asked me to prepare a critical survey of mathe matical models of atmospheric pollution, transport and deposition. This support gave me the opportunity to prepare a sort of "first draft" of the book, which I expanded in the following years.

Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to improve our scientific understanding of dispersion issues over complex terrain and publish results in scientific journals. Three scientific articles and one student's Master thesis are under preparation based on the results supported by this project. The first paper, entitled "The role of advection of fluxes on modeling dispersion in convective boundary layers", is aimed at examining the importance of the advection terms for dispersion in a convective boundary layer. An Eulerian three-dimensional higher-order closure dispersion model is presented. The model uses mean wind and turbulence values from a second order atmospheric boundary layer model. The dispersion model is validated against results from tank and field experiments and compared to results from Lagrangian dispersion models. The results show good agreement with experiment and Lagrangian modeling results for point source dispersion in a convective boundary layer. Sensitivity studies of the model helped to identify the roles that advection and horizontal transport terms in the equations for the fluxes play in simulating the essential features of pollutant dispersion. The results from the sensitivity tests show that the famous features of dispersion from a point source in the convective boundary layer - with an ascending plume during ground level release and descending for a lifted point source - is caused by the advection term in the equation for the vertical flux. Furthermore, it is shown that there is a tendency for the plume to split horizontally, which is also caused by the advection term in horizontal fluxes.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to improve scientists' understanding of dispersion in the planetary boundary layer, particularly the convective boundary layer (CBL), using Lagrangian "particle" models coupled with large-eddy simulation (LES) fields. A one-particle model for the mean concentration field was enhanced by a theoretically improved treatment of the LES subgrid-scale (SGS) velocities. The new model agreed with laboratory and field data and surface layer similarity theory. Investigations of stability effects on CBL dispersion showed that the dispersion rate decreased with a decreasing stability index -z(i)/L, which was attributed to the greater wind shear and the smaller turbulence scales in the surface layer. Using a two-particle model, the authors investigated relative dispersion in the CBL and found that it behaved in a quasi-homogeneous manner for all source heights except those near the surface; the latter was due to the vertical inhomogeneity in the dissipation rate. A study of concentration fluctuations revealed the large (factor of 10) variability caused by velocity field fluctuations; the predicted concentration variability matched the trends in field observations from CBL sources. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to improve our understanding of dispersion in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) by extending our Lagrangian particle dispersion model (LPDM) to the stable boundary layer (SBL) and to PBLs interacting with vegetation canopies. The LPDM was driven by large-eddy simulations (LESs). For the SBL, dispersion simulations of a weakly stable PBL demonstrated the slow dispersion rate caused by the stable stratification and showed that the LPDM produced plume features in good agreement with observations. These included plume ''tilting'' due to wind direction shear, plume spread, and the downwind concentration distribution. For a neutral PBL with a resolved forest canopy, the LPDM demonstrated enhanced vertical dispersion but reduced effects of directional shear on lateral dispersion by comparison to a reference no-canopy case. More detailed canopy studies were initiated by coupling the LES with a newly developed multi-layer canopy version of the NOAH land-surface model; initial results showed that the modeled canopy-imposed heat source accurately reproduces that obtained from the recent CHATS field experiment.

Book excerpt: The periods of time-varying turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer, i.e. the morning and evening transitions, are often overlooked or highly idealised by dispersion models. These transitions make up a significant portion of the diurnal cycle and are known to affect the spread of pollution due to the properties of turbulence in the residual and stable layers, resulting in phenomena such as lofting, trapping, and fumigation. Two main simulation techniques are presented for the purpose of modelling the dispersion of passive tracers in both convective and evening transitional boundary layers: Lagrangian stochastic (LS) modelling for 1D, inhomogeneous, non-stationary turbulence; and large-eddy simulation (LES) with a particle model tracing pollutant paths using a combination of the resolved flow velocities and a random displacement model to represent sub-grid scale motions. In the convective boundary layer, LS models more accurately representing the state of turbulence, and including the effect of skewness, are shown to produce dispersion results in closer agreement with LES. By considering individual particle trajectories, a reflective top boundary in LS models is shown to produce un-physical, sharp changes in velocity and position. By applying a correction to the vertical velocity variance based on representing the stable potential temperature gradient above the boundary layer, particles are contained within the boundary layer in a physically accurate way. An LS model for predicting dispersion in time-varying, skewed turbulence is developed and tested for various particle releases in transitional boundary layers with different rates of decay, showing an improvement in accuracy compared with previous LS models. Further improvement is made by applying a correction to the vertical velocity variance to represent the effect of a positive potential temperature gradient developing over the course of the transition. Finally, a developing stable boundary layer is shown to have a significant trapping effect on particles released near the surface.
