Sylvia Dowder had almost made it to the altar when her fiancé unexpectedly became a viscount, and dropped her like a stale crumpet to make a more “suitable” match. Though Sylvia’s heart has been crushed, her spirit has not. She puts her wits and social savvy to use as a secret gossip columnist—and as the Everton Domestic Society’s party planner to the ton. Luckily, she’s not in danger of ever falling for an aristocrat again... Especially not one like Anthony Braighton, Earl of Grafton. Raised in America, Anthony sees no reason to marry when he can enjoy all the perks of being an eligible earl. Determined to convince his family he doesn’t need a wife, he hires Sylvia to act as hostess and decorator for upcoming parties. Yet Sylvia is as adept at captivating his interest as she is at beautifying his home. And despite this Everton lady’s aversion to titled men, some attractions can’t be denied—and love rarely does go where it’s told . . .
Book Synopsis Virtue Ethics for Women 1250-1500 by : Karen Green
Download or read book Virtue Ethics for Women 1250-1500 written by Karen Green and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book locates Christine de Pizan's argument that women are virtuous members of the political community within the context of earlier discussions of the relative virtues of men and women. It is the first to explore how women were represented and addressed within medieval discussions of the virtues. It introduces readers to the little studied Speculum Dominarum (Mirror of Ladies), a mirror for a princess, compiled for Jeanne of Navarre, which circulated in the courtly milieu that nurtured Christine. Throwing new light on the way in which Medieval women understood the virtues, and were represented by others as virtuous subjects, it positions the ethical ideas of Anne of France, Laura Cereta, Marguerite of Navarre and the Dames de la Roche within an evolving discourse on the virtues that is marked by the transition from Medieval to Renaissance thought. Virtue Ethics for Women 1250-1500 will be of interest to those studying virtue ethics, the history of women's ideas and Medieval and Renaissance thought in general.

Download or read book A Virtuous Woman written by Kaye Gibbons and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1990 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Blinking Jack Stokes met Ruby Pitt Woodrow, she was twenty and he was forty. She was the carefully raised daughter of Carolina gentry and he was a skinny tenant farmer who had never owned anything in his life. She was newly widowed after a disastrous marriage to a brutal drifter. He had never asked a woman to do more than help him hitch a mule. They didn't fall in love so much as they simply found each other and held on for dear life. Kaye Gibbons's first novel, Ellen Foster, won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and the praise of writers from Walker Percy to Eudora Welty. In A Virtuous Woman, Gibbons transcends her early promise, creating a multilayered and indelibly convincing portrait of two seemingly ill-matched people who somehow miraculously make a marriage.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine de Pisan's writing is a valuable counterbalance to most of the rest of our evidence of medieval life which was written by men. She addresses all women, from those at the royal court to prostitutes, painting a vivid picture of their lives in fine detail-and often in a dryly amusing way. Her tone is moral, but also down to earth. A woman's position, as Christine herself knew, was hardly secure.

McLeod defines catalogs of women as 'lists - sometimes found in other works, sometimes found alone - enumerating pagan and (sometimes) Christian heroines who jointly define a notion of femineity'. The assumption that the women included in catalogs 'define a notion of femineity, ' a term she uses to rid her book of the connotations of 'femininity', is central to McLeod's study. ...

Book Synopsis Being a Lady in a Modern World by : Stephanie Garrett
Download or read book Being a Lady in a Modern World written by Stephanie Garrett and published by . This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work contains a rich deposit of instruction in wisdom and virtue of a mature godly woman. Every girl and young woman wants to grow up to be what she believes to be "a real woman" - this is natural and by design. And whether clearly stated or implied, every culture upholds a model or standard of what it means to be a "real women." Nowhere is this model or standard communicated more clearly and consistently than through the medium of television, film, and pop music. The message of our culture is clear. A real woman is a woman who possesses the power to garner the attention, desire, and admiration of men by just the right display of her physical assets, or sexiness; she calls her own shots always, and is free from the need to live in healthy inter-dependence with others or submission to any authority; she is free from the old-fashioned bondage of moral standards of sexual purity and therefore does whatever feels right for her; she possesses a sharp tongue and prides herself on her ability to give anyone who rubs her the wrong way, "a piece of her mind"; her self-worth is directly related to her net-worth and material possessions; and like her male counter-part, she who has the most toys wins. In the wake of this modern standard of womanhood are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of younger and now older women who live with emotional and physical brokenness, guilt, disappointment, heartache, and shame, having been misled by the message of our modern culture. Indeed, "there is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. - (Proverbs 16:25, NIV)" Against the message of modern culture lies the enduring wisdom of the scriptures that "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. - (Proverbs 31:30, NIV)" The Scriptures challenge our modern culture's idea of womanhood and reveal that real womanhood, and real power is rooted in virtue, humility, and self-control. The fact that Paul charged the mature women to instruct the young women is evidence that the younger women would not instinctively know how to govern their lives as it pertains to spirituality, domestic responsibility, sexuality, marriage, and friendship (Titus 2:3-5). Young woman do not obtain these life-lessons automatically; young girls will not become wise women simply because they grow older. Indeed, young women that are un-taught grow up to become "silly and weak-natured and spiritually dwarfed women... - (II Timothy 3:6, Amplified)" who are easily deceived and taken advantage of in life by men, or anyone for that matter, with evil intentions. If godly women do not intentionally disciple young girls and young women in what it means to be a woman, then television, film, and pop music will. The astounding statistics of sexually transmitted diseases, teenage suicides, un-wanted pregnancies, abortions, high-school drop outs, and hopeless and directionless young women is evidence that our culture's School of Womanhood is not producing the kind of future we would desire for the young women in our lives. What is needed in this hour, and for the sake of the young girls and young women of our generation and the generation to come, is to raise, or more accurately, to re-establish the standard of what it means to be a woman. This book goes a long way in doing just that and it will bless the lives of the young women who take hold to its instruction.
Book Synopsis The Treasure of the City of Ladies by : Christine de Pizan
Download or read book The Treasure of the City of Ladies written by Christine de Pizan and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 262 pages. Book excerpt: Written by Europe’s first professional woman writer, The Treasure of the City of Ladies offers advice and guidance to women of all ages and from all levels of medieval society, from royal courtiers to prostitutes. It paints an intricate picture of daily life in the courts and streets of fifteenth-century France and gives a fascinating glimpse into the practical considerations of running a household, dressing appropriately and maintaining a reputation in all circumstances. Christine de Pizan’s book provides a valuable counterbalance to male accounts of life in the middle ages and demonstrates, often with dry humour, how a woman’s position in society could be made less precarious by following the correct etiquette.
