Book excerpt: Frost action beneath pavements can lead to several problems, including thaw weakening, which leads to cracking and subsequent pumping of fine soil particles onto the surface, as well as hazardous conditions caused by differential heaving. This study used data and frost-susceptible soil collected at Ravalli County Airport, Hamilton, Montana, to study the use of geotextiles to mitigate frost heave. The ability of geotextiles to reduce frost heave in subgrade material by creating a capillary break was assessed by inserting disks of fabric in soil samples and subjecting them to laboratory frost heave tests. Frost heave tests were also conducted to classify the frost-susceptibilities of soils at the airport. Soil moisture characteristics and unsaturated hydraulic conductivities were determined for soils tested as well as for one of the geotextiles used. Results of the laboratory investigation indicate that certain geotextiles show promise for use as capillary breaks. In laboratory tests, the presence of geotextiles led to the reduction of frost heave by amounts up to about 60%. It is speculated that the capillary break action provided by the geotextile is attributable to the pore size and structure of the material and the surface properties of the fibers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frost action beneath pavements can lead to several problems, including thaw weakening, which causes cracking and subsequent pumping of fine soil particles onto the surface, as well as hazardous conditions caused by differential heaving. This study examined data and frost-susceptible soil collected during the winter of 1985-86 at Ravalli County Airport, Hamilton, Montana, to determine potential causes of frost heave. Variables analyzed were depth to water table, depth of frost penetration, maximum frost heave and soil moisture tension and soil temperature with depth. Analysis of the field data revealed the possibility that hydraulic conductivity of subgrade soils and rates of heat loss in the soil may be limiting frost heave rates. Soil density and depth to water table may also be factors affecting amounts of frost heave. Furthermore, the base course 'gravel' used at the airport contained considerable amounts of fines and did heave somewhat in laboratory tests. Recommendations for design changes to reduce frost heave at Ravalli County Airport were made. Keywords: Airport pavements; Field studies; Geotextiles; Pavement drainage. (edc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that a single freeze-thaw cycle in distilled water did not damage the fibers of a needle-punched or a heat-bonded geotextile; however, significant soil particle contamination occurred in the needle-punched fabric after being frozen in soil in laboratory tests. (The heat-bonded fabric was not tested in this manner.) The presence of soil particles both in fabric pores and on fabric fibers suggests that the fabric's ability to reduce frost heave is degraded. Laboratory frost heaving tests showed that a fabric's ability to mitigate frost heave decreased after having been exposed to vertical water flow in soil prior to freezing. The flow is thought to have introduced soil fines into the fabric, but this idea was not confirmed by inspection before freezing. A pumping test conducted with soil in a triaxial cell, designed to simulate stresses on a pavement subgrade during thawing, did not noticeably contaminate the needle-punched fabric tested. Furthermore, fabrics subjected to the triaxial cell pumping performed as well as new fabrics in mitigating frost heave in laboratory soil freezing tests. Whether the triaxial cell pumping test and/or the vertical water flow procedures simulate field conditions has yet to be determined.
