Book excerpt: "Compelling...American Victory represents the triumph of the human spirit." --Los Angeles Times Henry Cejudo's remarkable journey follows an unlikely hero, the son of illegal immigrants, from the mean streets of South Central LA to the glory of the Beijing Olympics. The first American in sixteen years to win the gold medal in freestyle wrestling and the youngest American gold medalist ever in this event, Henry's grit, passion, and resolve on display in China was a culmination of a life spent fighting-both on and off the mat. American Victory is his poignant and powerful memoir of how he rose above the statistics and dangers to become a winner-and a hero that embodies all that's best and most hopeful in the American dream.

Book excerpt: "Journey to Victory" is a uniquely compiled story as it incorporates the author's education and experience, along with learned facts, together in this compelling piece of literature. "Journey to Victory" opens when the main character, Naomi, makes her way to the store where her best friend, Sandy, is a cashier. Naomi collapses and is rushed to the emergency room of the local hospital to determine the cause. In the confusion, no one close to Naomi is told (up front) what is already known, and an important clue goes unnoticed for some time. Joshua Cantor, Naomi's boyfriend, has been planning a "day to remember", which would be complete when Naomi agrees to become his fiance. His plans go awry when he is told to "come to the hospital quickly" for Naomi wants only to talk to him. After pushing through a barrage of questions and staff enforced barriers, Josh finds Naomi in a sea of white, with cords and tubes protruding out from Naomi and from under the covers. Josh slowly begins to put the pieces together, when Naomi demands the privacy to talk to him alone. Each person in this drama carries unique qualities and characteristics which help to define who they are individually. Naomi, for example, is normally a sweet, joyful person, who tilts her head when waiting for answers, and is often bothered with and by her hair. However, you will be surprised at her bold "don't ask" attitude when she is under stress or fearful. You will get to KNOW each person well, as you read further and further into the story line. There are several strong threads that weave this 16 chapter story into its' beautiful masterpiece. First, it displays the many intense emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual "highs and lows" that any person who faces crisis will move through. I use the experiences from personal trauma, loss, and other life altering events, as well as the concepts I learned from a book I once read during my years of formal education. It taught of the 5 stages of grief. I too, went through the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. This will weave an emotional corridor toward Naomi's healing. The story proceeds to blossom as Josh and Sandy (as well as some others) stand side by side with her in realizations, meditations, and encounters, and often the distractions, plummets, and spiritual charges that flood her stormy life into victory. These people could not take away Naomi's pain, sleepless nights, and memories. However, they could sit with her, walk beside her, and support her. They would let her know, beyond the shadow of doubt, that she is not alone and she is well loved. Best of all, it reflects what TRUE, unaltered, agape love is, when her boyfriend never gives up, never fades away, and never "calls it quits". Secondly, the reader will sense their own immediate presence with Naomi as she sits in the police station waiting to identify the criminal. Booklovers will shiver when they suddenly feel the same sensations that Naomi experiences in the sanctuary of an empty church. To those who are walking through their own "valley", you may adopt some of Naomi's questions, realizations, and meditations along the way. Naomi will fill each heart with the pain of fear, the joys of the momentary relief, and the sadness of setback. Often, the reader will feel as though they are "right there" taking each step toward victory. Next, I have interlaced the truths found in the Holy Word of God within every occasion in the pages of this gripping story. The truth that God is in control. The realization that NO ONE is too "bad" or "lost" to receive the saving grace of God. And equally important, the steps to salvation are found carefully placed within the chapters. While this Christian, fiction drama holds the attention of those who walk with Jesus Christ, it compels everyone to contemplate the gospel found within. You will meet Stacy, whom Naomi disciples. She cares for someone els

Now, his Uncle Nehemiah wants to leave his position of high honor as Cupbearer to the King to return to Jerusalem, a city in ruins and beset by every kind of trouble! Nehemiah's request of the king, permission to return to help his own people, could so easily—in an empire riddled with political intrigue—be misconstrued as treasonous scheming. Bani himself is given an unexpected part to play, the outcome of which is to forever change his life. Seen through the eyes of Bani, this novel dramatizes a turning-point of history, in 445 BC, when—through confrontation and daring risks—Judaism was re-established in the Promised Land, and purified for her unfolding mission.

Book excerpt: The Mediterranean theater in World War II has long been overlooked by historians who believe it was little more than a string of small-scale battles--sideshows that were of minor importance in a war whose outcome was decided in the clashes of mammoth tank armies in northern Europe. But in this ground-breaking new book, one of our finest military historians argues that the Mediterranean was World War II's pivotal theater. Douglas Porch examines the Mediterranean as an integrated arena, one in which events in Syria and Suez influenced the survival of Gibraltar. Without a Mediterranean alternative, the Western Allies would probably have committed to a premature cross-Channel invasion in 1943 that might well have cost them the war. Brilliantly argued, with vivid portraits of Churchill, Montgomery, FDR, Rommel, and Mussolini, this original, accessible, and compelling account of a little-known theater emphasizes the importance of the Mediterranean in the ultimate Allied victory in Europe in World War II.

With the odds against him at every turn, he continued to pursue his dream of making a name for himself in the NFL. But when given a divine warning that he was dangerously close to hitting his final strike, he began searching for something greater. Journey with him as he shares his story of finding what it means to become a true champion in the midst of what the world may deem defeat. “If you’ve ever had the chance to meet Demario, you will truly understand the common phrase ‘force of nature.’ This title is normally reserved for athletes who are so powerful and agile that it’s overwhelming; you can’t stop it. Demario is like that on the field, but his joy, character, and passion for life might be his most powerful attributes. This book reminds us all that there’s something greater we live for. This might not always show up on a scoreboard or in a bank account, but our wins and losses do not have to define us. God’s call on our lives is the most important. Demario’s life is evidence of this exact thing. This book will be a blessing to anybody who is trying to make a difference in this world. I highly recommend it.” Carl Lentz, lead pastor of Hillsong East Coast “Demario’s story is one that will inspire, encourage, and challenge anyone who reads it. This book is a powerful story from an incredible man, whose faith in God will impact generations to come.” Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback “It speaks volumes when people who have money, power, and influence take time out of their busy lives to focus on the things that matter most. I’m looking forward to seeing what Demario creates off the field through his new book and the insights he’s found through his journey.” Andy Mineo, rapper

Book excerpt: Thirty devotions, featuring today's sports stars like Albert Pujols, Colt McCoy, and Tamika Catchings, that focus on a different kind of success--one that goes all the way to the soul. Fame, success, and a big paycheck are not the real motivation for some of the world's greatest athletes. Their main passion is not winning games but being their best for God. Through their experiences, fans and competitors can learn to focus on a success that goes beyond victory on the field or court. Be challenged by the example of Albert Pujols as he uses his sports platform to speak for those who can't , who finds his way back to faith after a journey through addiction, and be encouraged by the perseverance that brought Tamika Catchings from shy girl to confident Olympian. With practical wisdom, meaningful quotes from the athletes, and wrap-up questions, these devotions lay out the game plan for being your best for God.
