Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the high level of political engagement and the wide range of organizations involved in restoration projects from local to global levels, beyond some success stories, restoration is not happening at scale. To address this issue, three CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs) – Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA); Policies, Institutions and Markets (PIM) and Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) – decided to bring together their expertise in a joint stocktaking of CGIAR work on restoration. This publication illustrates with concrete examples the powerful contribution of forest and landscape restoration to the achievement of most, if not all the 17 sustainable development goals. It can be used to support the design of future restoration activities, programs and projects. We hope that this document will help upscale restoration efforts and deliver enhanced impact from our CGIAR research.

Book Synopsis Large-scale Forest Restoration by : David Lamb
Download or read book Large-scale Forest Restoration written by David Lamb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscapes are being degraded and simplified across the globe. This book explores how forest restoration might be carried out to increase landscape heterogeneity, improve ecological functioning and restore ecosystem services in such landscapes. It focuses on large, landscape-scale reforestation because that is the scale at which restoration is needed if many of the problems that have now developed are to be addressed. It also shows how large-scale forest restoration might improve human livelihoods as well as improve conservation outcomes. A number of governments have undertaken national reforestation programs in recent years; some have been more successful than others. The author reviews these to explore what type of reforestation should be used, where this should be carried out and how much should be done. For example, are the traditional industrial forms of reforestation necessarily the best to use in all situations? How can forest restoration be reconciled with the need for food security? And, are there spatial thresholds that must be exceeded to generate economic and environmental benefits? The book also examines the policy and institutional settings needed to encourage large-scale reforestation. This includes a discussion of the place for incentives to encourage landholders to undertake particular types of reforestation and to reforest particular locations. It also considers forms of governance that are likely to lead to an equitable sharing of the costs and benefits of forest restoration.

Chapter four analyses in detail forest rehabilitation project that were analysed in the field study carried out as part of this study. Chapter five draws lessons from the report.
Book Synopsis Forest Landscape Restoration by : John Stanturf
Download or read book Forest Landscape Restoration written by John Stanturf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoration ecology, as a scientific discipline, developed from practitioners’ efforts to restore degraded land, with interest also coming from applied ecologists attracted by the potential for restoration projects to apply and/or test developing theories on ecosystem development. Since then, forest landscape restoration (FLR) has emerged as a practical approach to forest restoration particularly in developing countries, where an approach which is both large-scale and focuses on meeting human needs is required. Yet despite increased investigation into both the biological and social aspects of FLR, there has so far been little success in systematically integrating these two complementary strands. Bringing experts in landscape studies, natural resource management and forest restoration, together with those experienced in conflict management, environmental economics and urban studies, this book bridges that gap to define the nature and potential of FLR as a truly multidisciplinary approach to a global environmental problem. The book will provide a valuable reference to graduate students and researchers interested in ecological restoration, forest ecology and management, as well as to professionals in environmental restoration, natural resource management, conservation, and environmental policy.

Book Synopsis Forest Pathways For Sustainable Development by : Faustine Zoveda
Download or read book Forest Pathways For Sustainable Development written by Faustine Zoveda and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is viewed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as a key risk to its mission and to the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. FAO sees forests and trees as key elements of the response to that climate risk.Forests make vital contributions to both people and the planet, bolstering livelihoods, providing clean air and water, conserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change. Effective forest management strengthens resilience and adaptive capacities to climate-related natural disasters, contributes to climate mitigation by sequestering and storing carbon, and reduces emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, which is the second-leading cause of climate change after burning fossil fuels. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of forest and landscape restoration to contribute to climate change mitigation. This potential is reinforced by political pledges like the Bonn Challenge, the UN decade on ecosystem restoration, and the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100). To realize this potential and translate political will into results, practitioners need realistic, cost-effective approaches to implement restoration. Based on global work on forestry and food security, we present several proven, scalable approaches involving assisted natural regeneration and direct seeding that can be part of the effort to realize forest and landscape restoration's potential worldwide. We conclude by identifying some gaps that require assistance from researchers to address and with key messages for practitioners and policy-makers.

Download or read book Operationalizing integrated landscape approaches in the tropics written by Reed, J. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty, food insecurity, biodiversity and habitat loss are persistent global challenges that are further exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. These challenges are particularly hard felt in the tropical landscapes of the global South where tensions between local socio-economic and international environmental commitments are pervasive. Due to the apparent failure of sectorial approaches to address such challenges, more holistic strategies are being increasingly promoted. Integrated landscape approaches are one such example; essentially a governance strategy that engages multiple stakeholders to reconcile societal and environmental objectives at the landscape scale to identify trade-offs and potential synergies for more sustainable and equitable land management. Integrated landscape approaches have been widely endorsed in the international and national policy arena, within academia, and in the discourse surrounding conservation and development funding. However, despite strong scientific theories and concepts, the implementation, and particularly evaluation and reporting, of integrated landscape approaches in the tropics remains poorly developed. The COLANDS initiative represents an explicit attempt to contribute towards the evidence base by operationalizing integrated landscape approaches in Ghana, Zambia and Indonesia. In this regard we aim to provide regular, honest reporting of progress. This book details the experiences of researchers engaged in these landscape-scale initiatives across the first two years of implementation. With dedicated chapters on current progress, biodiversity, methods and evaluation the book provides useful tools and resources for research and implementation. Furthermore, we consider the complex socio-political challenges associated with landscape approaches with chapters focussed on how to effectively engaging stakeholders and understanding the national policy environment. We then provide profiles of the sites in each of the three countries and describe the historical context, current status and potential for more integrated landscape governance. This book explores the techniques and strategies that can be deployed to improve the governance and management of land and natural resources and better reconcile conservation and development objectives in tropical landscapes undergoing rapid change.
